Sinopsis

Johnstone Country. Vigilante Justice.
A thrilling new series from the legendary Western author William W. Johnstone where justice is very personal.
GUNS OF THE VIGILANTES
It begins with a massacre. A crime so brutal and bloody, the local sheriff isn't smart enough to solve it. But when young deputy Dan Caine sees the slaughter for himself—an entire family murdered—he can't let it go. Especially when the eldest daughter is missing. Right there and then, Caine makes a fateful decision: throw away his badge, form a vigilante team, and go after the killers . . .

There's one problem: Who would be crazy enough to join him? First up is a grizzled old tinpan named Fish Lee, who discovered the bodies. Then there's the Kiowa, an Indian scout with a grudge; Cooley, a washed-up gambler; Mortimer, a whiskey-soaked newsman; and Holt, a half-grown stock boy. Sure, they might be crazy. They might be inexperienced. But one thing is...

Deputy Sherriff Dan Caine is the lead character of this story and I suspect the new series as well. Dan is an interesting player as he has high ideals and desires to right a wrong but in practice, he is a greenhorn. Dan knows nothing about bucking the perpetrators he is after, doesn’t know how to recognize when someone else is faster on the draw and lots more. However, by the end of this first book, Dan has gained a gut instinct for when trouble is coming. His best friend is gambler or is there more to that man’s story, too?

The gang Dan and others ride to bring to justice as well as rescue the lone survivor of a massacre, includes a cold-hearted female character named Susan Stanton. The woman’s past is revealed some in the story and her ability to strike fear into others with lightning speed is something. The trail for Dan and his associates is a long one that eventually comes to a fork in the road, and that is when the tension in the novel climbs quickly.

At the end of the book, there is opening for more tales with Dan Caine whether as a deputy sherriff in another town or perhaps again as a vigilante. The authors use many different techniques to tell the story, one of them is by giving the reader a glimpse as to how history would look back and note what occurred during a particular gun fight or other event. Sometimes in the story it was as if someone else was telling the story, so the point of view changed and that at times was confusing to me.

I do look forward to seeing how the character develops and tracking his adventures in any future books in this series; it definitely holds promise!

This is my first Johnstone novel and I got it at a discounted price. I was expecting a straight easily digestible western. I got more than I expected.

This book is wild and all over the place. There may be a simple plot going through, but along the way you'll have a mummy's curse, a lost sheik, psychics, random Apache attacks and other odd stuff. The narrative is weird in places, sometimes jumping into what present day people know about certain events. Sometimes there's newspaper articles interwoven into the prose.

Is it fun? Yep. Are there vigilantes and outlaws making a mad dash thru the desert? Yep. Are there mentions of breasts? Lots. Is it a bad thing? I suppose that is subjective. For a novel written in 2021, it can be a bit jarring.

Sometimes the action is detailed....sometimes it's not. The dialogue can be wonky. The vigilantes are certainly a misfit ragtag group of people and the outlaws are definitely bad guys. I'm giving this four starts because it's weird cowboy sh*t and I'm here for it. guns-of-the-vigilantes Nolan803 3

Surprised there aren't more ratings on this story. This is a new series by JA Johnstone and her ghost writers. Interesting enough story although a little on the slow side. Mandy Makarewicz100 1 follower
