Colonists come face to face with Indigenous Americans, enslaved Africans, and pirates as they struggle to build a life in North America.

Such Miracles and Mischiefs, the second book in the Cupids trilogy, adventures across the first three English colonies in the Americas—Newfoundland, Virginia, and Bermuda—and highlights women's colonial experience. After pirates attack the Guy family's plantation near Cupids, Nancy Ellis needs all her ingenuity to survive in the hands of lawless men. I have marked this as read because so far I'm one of the few people to have read it. I read it as I was writing it. I may have been overly generous in giving myself 5 stars but I really, really hope you will enjoy it.7 s Jim Fisher567 49

A 5-star follow-up to A Roll of the Bones. Literary historical-fiction at its best.historical-fiction newfoundland2 s David1,596 11 Read

Morgan-Cole goes well beyond Cupids in this one, though everything is connected somehow. The appearance of Pocahontas is a bold step, especially in the much more honest anti-Disneyfying portrayal of the Indigenous peoples, especially of 'Rebecca Rolfe' in England. From Cupids, the narrative goes south to Bermuda and Virginia and back east to England, with stopovers in sundry other places. A wealth of attention has gone into even the 'minor' characters, creating a novel in which no one is truly unimportant.new-in-20241 Jean93 1 follower

Loved it, even if I'm sad to have to wait till Fall 2023 for the conclusion of the trilogy.

My full review will be in the February Northeast Avalon Times, and will make its way here eventually. (I always aim for three months after publication, rarely make that target.)mysteries newfoundland-and-labrador-books women-writers1 Linda Churchill399 8

Waited to read this book for a while, and was not disappointed. Love this author and this trilogy , but 2023 is a long time to wait for the last one in the series. 1 Cynthia281 9

Trudy Morgan-Cole has really hit her fantastical (but strangely believable) stride in this second book in The Cupid's Trilogy.

Has there ever been a book about a woman's adventures on a pirate ship before? A story that combines enslaved Africans AND a fascinating re-telling of the story of Pocohontus? This is only a small glimpse into the action and ballyhoo the Cupid's people got into (particularly the feisty women). You will want to read it yourself!1 Che Ryl12

This book has everything: adventure, romance, scandal, darkness, and humor. The characters of Nancy, Ned, and Kathryn are so well developed and I found myself totally wrapped up in their lives. I especially appreciate the strong female characters from a time period when women were somewhat voiceless, as well as the fictionalized versions of some notable historical figures. I have never had this much fun reading historical fiction before. Katrina Stonoff163 4

Wonderful to catch up with Nan and Ned and Kathryn and all the other characters from Cupid's Cove. Great to get a glimpse of so many historical locations around the Atlantic Ocean. I especially enjoyed Morgan-Cole's take on Pocahontas. Quite different from Disney's version! I have nothing but praise for this book. Now I have to settle in for a year or two of waiting for the next book! Beth173

Well written throughout. I started this trilogy because I was interested in the Canadian history aspect, but I appreciated this novel’s wider scope that revealed new details about early history of Virginia and other former British colonies. The characters are appealing and realistic. Recommended! Christine270 6

Can't wait for #3! Tracy Fry3

Trudy, this book has been as thrilling as the first. I cannot wait to read the final in the trilogy, though I truly do not want the story to end. Ben Mugford37

Much the first book, the worst part is the cliffhanger ending with the next book over a year away. Kathryn Baverstock93
