LICENSE TO DATE was a recent free selection, and I am glad I gave it a try. It made me smile. It was a clever and light-hearted romance, reminded me of a modern Cinderella fairytale twist with two very likable and flirty characters.

Kaitlin's friends coaxes her into getting back into the dating world by promising their free labor painting her new house if she goes on five dates. Now willing to accept pretty much any date to just get the five dates over with, she meets a handsome bartender Paul at the elegant Geoffries hotel while waiting for date number one. Only thing is, Paul isn't what he seems to be, and as the dates stack up these two continue to cross paths.

If you are in the mood for a sweet, G-rated (kisses only) romance I would recommend this one. Perfect for a quick beach read or by a cozy fireplace. Or, as our heroine in this story enjoys... maybe with a glass of wine on the dock down by the river. flirty-fun free genre-contemporary ...more23 s Elaine - Splashes Into Books3,639 119

This is a heartwarming romance and, although it is the sixth story in the series, you don’t need to have read the earlier stories to enjoy this one - I know because I haven’t read them! After discovering her fiancé had cheated on her with her sister, Kaitlin has sworn off men and is concentrating on renovating her new home. However, her friends agree to help paint her house if she’ll go on five dates. Determined to make the most of this offer, Kaitlin decides to schedule the five dates into five consecutive days - that should mean her home gets painted next weekend! Now all she needs are the men to date . . . .

The author has created a great group of friends, all of whom are having their own problems or dilemmas but all super supportive of each other. The dates are all held at the same venue and Kaitlin finds she isnÂ’t particularly looking forward to meeting the men sheÂ’s dating but she definitely is looking forward to seeing Paul again. Paul is just WOW! It is a relatively short story but it is a real page turner and brilliant to escape into, with engaging characters, humorous incidents and lots of love. I really enjoyed this and will definitely be looking out for more by this author in future.

After a dissastisfied night with a succubus sucking souls, I thought I wouldn't be able to sleep peacefully knowing there are other books that needed my attention. With that, I immediately got my Kindle and searched for Susan Hatler's books. And Licence to Date popped up on my screen. Whoopeedo!

Kaitlin is busy remodeling her new home while her friends Ginger and Kirsten urge her to go back to the dating pool. They strike a deal with her. They're gonna paint her whole house for free, provided that she'll go on a date with her realtor and four other guys within 5 days. Tempting offer, indeed, especially when she's a little tight on the budget. So for the free labor, she gives them the deal.

Five men for five dates within five days. Not bad, right?

Well, let's see. First date, realtor Chace McDermott arrives late - too late that he sees Kaitlin flirting with the bartender instead.
Second date - with an architect that her mom approves - has Kaitlin hanging up and rappelling down the walls of Goeffries Hotel - again with the bartender instead of the real date. Oh man!

Third date - with someone her co-worker has set up - oh, should I even tell what transpired? Kaitlin thinks of the bartender (who later becomes the receptionist ) all the time while she's on the date. Disaster, again.

What's up with he bartender anyway? You'll be surprised when you finally realize who Paul the bartender slash receptionist is!

I won't tell what happened to other dates that succeeded. But here's what I'm gonna tell you. Licence to Date is a very exciting and funny read, it made me forget about the previously forgettable paranormal book I read a while back. Kaitlin and her naivete is so on point, and Paul the bartender is a darling. The kind of man I'd be happy to date, with or without licence. Susan Hatler has just made me a one happy girl once again! 7 s Anne4,216 69.9k

Snagged this one as a freebie the other day!

So, Kaitlin's pals offer to help her paint her house, if she'll dip her toes back into the dating pool.
She agrees, but with the intention of getting the dates over with as quickly as possible.
Naturally, she meets Mr. Awesomesauce in the process.

It's short, cute, and sweet.
Did it blow my socks off?
No.
But it didn't annoy me, either.chick-lit kindle-app read-in-2014 ...more7 s Julie Carpenter1,544 195

Oh my I loved this one! Fun, cute, flirty, swoony and a great shorter chick-lit read! If you haven't read any of Susan Hatler's books I highly recommend that you pick one up. The Better Date than Never collection is a great place to start. They are all stand alone novels so you can pick and choose but the great thing is that all the characters are interconnected in the stories. In fact as I was reading this and all the friends and other ladies in the book kept popping up, I had to go back to the list of books and see which of these ladies gets their own book. I can't wait to read Mel, Kristen and Ginger's books!

Kaitlin is through with the whole dating scene. Done, no more, zip, zilch, nada!!!! No more men...EVER!!!! She's going to enjoy fixing up her new house, the one that the 80's threw up in, and enjoy her life. That is until her two best friends make her a deal, a deal that's too good to pass up. She agrees to go on 5 dates and they will paint the inside of her house-for FREE! See, too good to pass up!

Ok, this is going to be easy. Snag every single man she can find, all the ones that people keep saying they're going to set her up with. One date every night starting on Monday and bam, bam, bam she's done and her friends can spend the weekend painting with her. Win-Win!!!

Oh Kaitlin, Ohhhhhh Kaitlin. Boy oh boy. Girl you need to remember the saying, our best laid plans.... just saying honey!

From date one, there is something out to spoil her plans. Why can't each date just come, not say anything and be done within a few minutes? That would be perfect. I have to say I loved all the different dates and the crazy situations that they sometimes put her in.

But one of the major kinks in her life plan is that bartender. The one who keeps smiling at her, won't leave her alone so she can prep for her first date. Then comes in her friends to watch and make sure she doesn't fake her date. Not only are they causing her more problems but now the bartender has overheard their conversation and knows why she's really there. Throw in more deals from her friends and this simple easy week has just grown more complicated, but hey more free labor always makes life look brighter...right?

Kaitlin is so much fun! I really just loved her character. I loved her relationship with her friends. She's hurting from past relationships and yet she is trying to find peace and joy in her life in a way that she can. But I loved how this book was able to help her heal and find peace from some of those relationships.

Paul, well what can I say about Paul other than the fact that he's something else. Wow! Yeah for those of you who book boyfriends I can already tell you that you might, nope scratch that, you definitely would find one in him. Ugh, I keep starting to type different moments with Paul from the book but I just can't. I can't! If I tell you then it takes the fun out of the surprises for you. Lots and lots of fabulous surprises await you in this read. Let's just say it again...Paul's GREAT!

Now it is a shorter book and these books always end with a HEA so if you don't the insta love stories then this may not be the book for you but if I could convince you to take a chance on an insta love book/series it would definitely be this one! Oh yeah!!!!

It's one that I really could go back right now and read again! If I didn't have several other review books piling up and a busy schedule right now then I would so go back and reread it right away. That's how much I loved it! Now you may not have that instant love for it I did but whether you do or not, I think you'd enjoy it to say the least.

Content: clean. A couple heated kisses but nothing more than a kiss. Susan Hatler's books usually have some swoony kissing in them but are fun clean reads!

Whoever read the series knows Kaitlin has been engaged to Paul DeWitt. However, Melanie, Kaitlin's sister, tells her that he is her ex. Thus, Kaitlin breaks up their engagement and swears off men. But her best friends pressure her to go out on at least five dates to give up harassing her about it. On her first date at the Geoffries Hotel she meets Paul, the bartender and sparks fly. Little she did know that this Paul ("the sequel" xD) is anything but a bartender.

I think this is by far my favorite of the series. The depth of the story and characters and how it all came together by the end just made me all

I mean from the moment Paul met Kaitlin .... boom! instant OTP feels <33333

I absolutely loved how Paul is the most developed male in the series. There's more about his life and story that made me just love him ever more. He's such a gentleman. Also, loved the whole 5 dates while the 5th Paul/Milton reserved for himself *heart-eyes*. Loved the moment when he and Kaitlin kissed on the tower/fund raiser thing I think I died that instant. And their wedding was PERFECTION *_* *second death by feels*

This book is definitely on my favorite shelf right now. How I want this to be a movie so bad..

Kaitlin's broke it off with her cheating fiancé Paul and is in no hurry to date. For now, she just wants to focus on remodelling her house into her dream home. However her friends, Kristen and Ginger are determined to get her back on the road into the dating scene. They drive a hard bargain - if she goes on five dates, they'll paint her house for free! Kaitlin's tempted, just five meaningless dates for free labour? Why not? Wait till she meets Paul, the sequel!

I adored the fairy tale ending in every sense of the word. This was well and truly written to appeal to girls me! What's not to love about a tall, mysterious, handsome, not to mention romantic, stranger Paul? Kaitlin was a pleasant female lead with a great personality. It was realistic how she wasn't all that ready to jump back into dating. I found the encounters between Kaitlin and Paul natural and unforced - although Kaitlin did set her dates at Geoffries Hotel. The conclusion was sort of predictable but it was charming nonetheless. If you're in the mood for a feel-good chick lit, this is the one to pick up. *I received a free copy of this novel through Netgalley and the publisher Hatco Publishing in exchange for an honest review.*

I've read the first of this series and now this, the sixth novel. What I love about these stories is that they are clean, cute, fun romances. The writing is really nice and easy to follow and I can connect with the characters really well.

I really loved the relationships in this story. Both those that were already existing and those that were developed. Kaitlin and her friends are fun to read about and play off of each other really well. I also loved how she and her sister Melanie got along. It was a really nice sister relationship to see, particularly in a novel of this length.

Paul and Kaitlin were really cute together. I completely bought into their attraction to each other, although this was one of the sore spots of the novel and the main reason I only rated it three stars. While I really loved them as a couple and thought they were completely adorable, I don't how things were rushed. The entire story took place over about five days, which was just too fast for me. Spreading out their interactions over a little more time might have improved my overall opinion of the story, although I do really enjoy it as is.

Another thing that seems to be a trend with these novels are the relationships between the women and their mothers. In the two that I've read the leading woman has a very overbearing mother. They are always really close to their mothers, which I love, but there never really seems to be a complete resolution to their conflicts.

These stories are such fun, clean, romances and they make me feel really happy. I also love that they are about women finding love without making the women weak. They are always really strong. The only thing, aside from the fast paced love, that I find rather disappointing is that the guy is never really what the woman thinks to begin with. I would just to read a story where it's completely ok to fall in love with someone and for them to be exactly who you fell in love with, not some famous person or really rich guy (not exactly what happens here, but you get the point).

Overall I think this is a really fun read and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fun, clean, feel good romance stories. I will ly read more of these novels in the future. They are the perfect read for a rainy day. contemporary reviewed3 s Casey403 7

I don't know if I'm just not a romantic but I thought this story was horrible. Kaitlin was judgmental and just plain mean to the men she went out with. To be honest maybe that's why here fiancee cheated on her, she was just a b*#ch. I know in these types of stories have to have there stand byes :

1. Catty friends who care WAY more about your love life than any real friend would (and of course their hair brained reasons why 'you needs a man'

2. Having to have a man for some self completion. I know Kaitlin goes on and on about her house and painting it, and even states she "independent" but still agrees to go on dates when she didn't want too. (just to progress the story and make her seem the opposite of course.)

3. The "man" of course being an Adonis, she goes on and on about Paul after meeting him for the first time.

4. Everyone, including the characters in the book know that they're going to get together but of course have to add conflict to the story (cuz it can't stand on its own) by having Paul go by a different name so Kaitlin won't know its him

The best I can say about this is it's a quick read or (you'll give up on it half way through) but I have defiantly read worse that was longer so I'll give it that. It's what you think will happen just from the summary, no real twists or turns. I personally didn't the main characters at all but I seemed to be in the minority. My favorite in this series so far, and free on Amazon as of 2/15/14.
Kaitlyn has sworn off of dating after she finds out that her fiancé, Paul, cheated on her (unknowingly with her own sister). Now, 4 months later, she just wants to focus on remodeling her house. Her best friends are not leaving her in peace though. They want her to date again and offer to paint her house with her, if she'll go on five dates. While waiting for her first date, Kaitlyn meets a bartender, coincidentally named Paul. He's sweet, charming, and extremely good-looking, but she isn't interested in real dating! During her other four dates she keeps running into Paul (it may be because she keeps suggesting his place of employment ;). Sparks fly, and her other dates never have a chance. Will she give Paul a chance to win her heart, or will she continue to protect her heart?
The romance develops in about a week, I wish it had been drawn out longer. The story was so funny and sweet though, I loved Paul, and how Kaitlyn couldn't resist seeing him again, even when she shouldn't have been (because she was on other dates). Great chemistry, while still keeping the story clean. I loved it!3 s Aimee (Getting Your Read On)3,029 271

How cute is that cover? It fits the book perfectly. It is flirty and fun and there is a story behind that dress. ;)

This is a short story, I read it in an evening (at work, which made work the best night ever!). This is part of the Better Date than Never series. If you haven't had a chance to read any of these, you really should. Especially if you love romance. Susan knows how to write a romance.

I think this book is my favorite so far in the series. It seems almost wrong to pick favorites, but there it is. Paul is, . . . oh oi. Mmmmm. (so yummy you only get noises and sigh's from me. I think I fell in love with him from the beginning moment right along with Kaitlin (Even though she denied it. I'm not. I'm not denying it). He's dreamy. This book was the perfect romantic escape complete with swoon worthy kisses and light mist and swelling music playing. Oh, maybe some of that was just in my head. haha.

Bottom line is that I really loved reading Kaitlin's story. It was sweet and clean and romantic and I enjoyed the time I spent reading it. 3 s Paula LegateAuthor 10 books23

This was a fun book! Kaitlin found out her fiancé had been cheating at her at her bridal shower. Not only was he cheating, but he was cheating on her with her step sister. Her step sister had never met her fiancé, so she had no idea until Kaitlin introduced them the day of the bridal shower.
Kaitlin is so done with guys. Her friends on the other hand wants Kaitlin to start dating again. All Kaitlin wants is to focuses on remolding her new home. Her friends said they would offer free labor, and help paint, if she would go on 5 dates. She can't turn down free help. She intended on going on 5 dates in 5 days, and by the weekend she would have her friends painting her house.
You will just to have to read this delightful book to see if she find that special someone.

Another cute story in this series of short stories. Kaitlan ended up un-egaged after her bridal shower (learning your finacee slept with your sister will do that) and since then wants nothing to do with men and has thrown herself into renovating her new house. When her friends offer to help paint if she will go on 5 dates, she agrees and plans to get them over as soon as possible.

This book sat on my kindle for months after receiving it – it was just after I split from my now ex fiancé after finding out he was cheating and reading romance was the last thing I wanted to do. Every time I turned my kindle on it would jump out at me so I eventually gave in, and it was the perfect read to get me back into the genre. Obviously, I was able to relate to Kaitlin and after reading an article about having to go on an average of 7 dates to find the next someone special, the idea of 5 dates in 5 days seemed the perfect way to go (no I didn’t try it, finding 1 person I wanted to date was hard enough!). Paul is the perfect gentleman and I loved reading how Kaitlin slowly let him in. The chemistry between the two of them is clearly evident, and with the easy writing style, the pages were soon coming to an end. It’s a quick, fun, entertaining and humorous read, and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of the sweet romance. I will definitely be reading this book again in the future.

I LOVE Susan Hatler's Better Date than Never Series! Each book is fun, romantic and full of familiar characters that I have grown to love! In License to Date Kaitlin is so focused on remodeling her house, she couldn't care less about dating! Her ex-fiance cheated on her with her own sister and how can she ever trust a guy again? Her friends think differently and they strike a bargain with Kaitlin to date again that is hilarious! When Kaitlin mets the sexy bartender and he tells her his name, I thought to myself, "NO WAY!!! Kaitlin is ready to swear off all men. I mean, wouldn't discovering your fiance is a cheating liar right before your wedding do that to a woman? In a plot to help her move on, her friends strike a deal with her--go on five dates and they'll help her paint her whole, new, in-desperate-need-of-a-remodel, house.

Right off the bat, as she's waiting for Date #1, she meets an amazing new bartender, Paul, and can't stop thinking about him. He seems to turn up everywhere she is and as they get to know each other, she can't help but wonder if he could be the one to finally help her move on.

I loved the rappelling scene--so romantic! I love the fact that you really can't truly judge someone, their intent, and who they really are by the superficial traits that are obvious. This one is completely swoonworthy. I really loved the characters, their interactions, and their personalities.

This was a quick fun read and I loved Paul, "not that we know each other, of course," he said. "So I don't expect you to believe me." He winked. "I think you're doing the right thing by taking a break, though. If you're not ready to date, you're not ready. So what do you get if I give you my phone number? Because that's it right? You weren't planning on actually asking me out?" He's just I loved him there no other way to say how much I loved him, "I turned you down for date number four." His stance shifted then he stepped toward me slowly as if gauging my reaction. When I didn't retreat, he came even closer until we stood just a foot apart. "Kaitlin, I want to be with you. I set myself up as date number five because I plan to be the last date you ever have."

G-rated, chick-lit-style, romantic novella

Still reeling from dumping her fiancé four months ago, after discovering that the slimy jerk had been dating both her and her beloved step-sister, unbeknownst to either of the two women until just before the wedding, Kaitlin has no interest in dating. All she wants to do is renovate her recently purchased, 1980's-era home located right next to the Sacramento River, turning it into a safe retreat from the harsh realities of undependable men. Unfortunately for the smooth achievement of her goal, her two best girlfriends won't take, "No," for an answer, insisting that, for her own good, Kaitlin needs to start dating ASAP. Kaitlin is firm in standing up against their pleas until they offer an irresistible prize in exchange for her going on at least five dates: they will provide free labor painting her entire house, and even throw in caulking her shabby bathtub.

What's a gal to do? Give in, of course. But conditionally.

Kaitlin surrenders to her two loving, busybody besties, but is determined to outwit them at their own matchmaking game by engineering a five-date, five-night sprint to the finish line of getting their dating agreement over and done with. She will meet each of five men for a brief date, with no intention of letting the connection go beyond that for any of them.

Unfortunately for Kaitlin's heart-protection plan, she's barely at the starting gate of her dating race when, while impatiently waiting for her tardy first date to meet her at the bar of a swanky local hotel, she encounters a handsome, blue-eyed bartender close to her own age of 28, whose wit and empathy draw her unwilling romantic interest.

This is not a full-length romance novel but rather a story that is a bit longer than a novella. As such it is a fast read. Un this author's actual short stories, given an additional 15-20,000 words to maneuver in, the author avoids offering up "insta-love" between the protagonists in order to speed up the progress of the relationship. As is usual in all of this author's works I've read so far, and seems to be very much part of her "brand," this story is not merely a "slow burn" romance, it is G-rated, with only light kissing toward the last part of the story.

This book is as much "chick lit" as it is a romance novel in that it contains key traits of chick lit that are not hallmarks of romance, including in particular: dating disasters and the use of first-person point of view.

The romantic protagonists of this story are a bit one-dimensional, especially the hero, since we never hear his thoughts. Much in two other stories by this author that I have read, the hero is a saintly, Beta Male. Given that Alpha Male, "Bad Boy" heroes are rife in romantic fiction, I myself enjoy that this author seems to specialize in Clark Kent type, positive heroes vs Dark Knight type anti-heroes. The latter gets rather redundant and predictable after a while in modern romance.

Personally, I'm not usually a fan of romance novels written in first person. It has a tendency to make any protagonist sound rather narcissistically immature and self-involved, and is much better relegated to the young-adult genre. However, given that this author writes romantic comedy, it is not a bad choice for the purpose of humor to use first person. It makes it easier to reveal to the reader that the protagonist will be traveling an important and interesting growth arc, which is ever-green in romance fiction. That is, the cynical, "burned by love" protagonist who has sworn to never take a chance on love again.

In addition, given the fact that, in one form or another, the key romantic conflict of every romance novel is the journey of distrust to trust, this isn't actually a cliche for a romance novel, it is a crucial element of it--rather a dead body in a murder mystery and the need to figure out "whodunnit." The only difference from novel to novel is how well that journey is portrayed based on the uniqueness of the protagonists in a given book. This author does a good job of offering distinct characters and an intriguing version of that essential journey, which held my interest throughout. As a very jaded reader, it is high praise for me to say I didn't skim over any part of this story.

To sum up, given that this author is known for writing romantic comedy, or at the least, very mild drama, this story is true to her brand. It provides pleasant, romantic entertainment for those looking for a quick, light, angst-free, sex-free read.

I rate this story as follows:

She decides to ask him to be one of her five dates, but things donÂ’t transpire she hoped. I enjoyed this book immensely. The twists and turns make it very interesting. I have read quite a few Susan Hatler, but this is my absolute favorite one (with the exception of The Wedding Charm...). I met the heroine in another book where her most recent tragedy unfolded. Now the poor thing is being roped into dating again by her best friends who think it's time for her to get back out there even though all she wants to do is renovate her house. When they strike up a deal, she finds herself in the middle of dating escapades all around the posh hotel of the city. Thankfully, one of the men who works there is always ready to help her out of a scrape... or accidentally cause a scrape... or at least get into the scrape with her. He was the best, and so was this story, so do yourself a favor and read it.

Kaitlin dumped her ex-fiance four months ago after learning he was also dating her step-sister, right before the wedding. Her two friends force her to date five guys to get back into the action and they will help her paint her new house. Each date is at the same hotel bar and the bartender is watching and listening as her friends show up to verify she is really on the dates. The characters are fantastic, with great backstories and fun banter. The storyline is a joy as the situations become crazy and the emotions skyrocket. Loved the bond that grows between Paul and Kaitlin from the repelling to the Ball. Great ending.

they talked, Kaitlyn, into a bet.
5 dates, & they help paint.
On Kaitlyn's first date, she meets Paul.
Not thrilled with his name.
But he did make her tingle all over.
All she could think about all week
was Paul, & his sapphire blue eyes.
Paul's perfect, but he only wants to
be friends with, Kaitlyn.
I loved everything about this story!!1 Kimberly Davis434

After finding out that her fiancée cheated on her with her sister, Kaitlin gives up on love and just wants to fix her house ;up. Her friends have other plans for her though. They agree to help her paint if she goes on five dates. She meets the first man at the local hotel. He is late and while she is waiting she meets Paul who is interested her. She starts to have feelings for him but she does not want to admit to them. I love how Susan Hatler writes sweet but interesting love stories. I could not put this book down. I love how Paul went out of his way to help her with her house even without her knowing that he was working on it.

She donÂ’t believe in dates anymore
Kaitlin put a pause to dating ..... but she have friends!
And they use any means to make her put behind the past man experience and date again.
Anything for her hapiness..... and it works!
Not quite as they imagined, but who cares?
