many, I first heard of this book from its webtoon counterpart. Though while I was reading the webtoon it seemed that the spiciness was missing. I was so surprised to find this book but also relieved. It felt there were holes in the webtoon and the book, as it always does, was overflowing the brim.

In the beginning, the side characters were not introduced well, it was hard to tell them apart even after reading a hundred chapters. Mostly it was the knights I couldn't keep straight. Also, the magic system wasn't explained but I will spill the beans and say that it's done in Season Two. The world-building was very nice but I suggest reading the webtoon as well because it is expertly drawn.

Season one was pretty short compared to how far this story goes. I was elated to find out there were almost 300 chapters out there and cannot wait for them to be translated into English. Also if we could get actual hard copy books of them I would die happy. *begging*.... UPDATE: They are being made into books as we speak. Ahhhhhh!

Max and Rifton are it for me. One delicate, one strong. In every way they seem to be complete opposites and I honestly can't get enough. Yet, although different they share a ruined past. How do they not realize they are each other's only light in a den of darkness I will never understand. Both are so very complex and deep that I had to forgo sleep and read as much as I humanly could. And when Maxi, not used to people listening to her, started embellishing stories. I guffawed haha.

Yes, Riftan is a pompous @ss but he is under the assumption of certain things I can't divulge. Max is demure and has no backbone yet again there are reasons for these things. The two souls slowly grow together and it is breathtaking. Maxi blooms and becomes more confident and defiant. She is so stubborn and determined that there will be no limits as to what she might do. And to watch her sass the greatest knight of all time is something you want to stick around and see.

To confess I believe this series has taken me to the brink of my sanity. I am obsessed, I want to read them all this instant, I will save every piece of fanart I get my hands on, and will not stop thinking about all that I lived through while immersed in this world for at least two months maybe more....... believe me yet?

Although I love Max with the burning of a thousand suns, she made Riftan suffer endlessly with her ignorance. Actually Riftan was just as bad. But I may be too hasty in complaining about this because even though we are given over one hundred chapters in seasons 1 and 2 they are all composed within a year after Riftan's return. Still, I was so stressed that their mule-headed pride almost put me six feet under.

Oh, and forewarning you will be left with a hot and heavy cliffhanger. So don't pull out all of your hair, you'll need it for the upcoming season.

I don't usually give 1 or 2 stars, but I couldn't find enough good things about this book to give at least 3.
Let's pretend the story is fine, though it isn't, but if you do that kind of story that's totally great. One thing I would to say is: PLEASE PUT TRIGGER WARNINGS. I'm not a sensitive reader, but some are and they have the right to know in this book you have rape and violence. The MC says "no" and "stop" so many times but they are all just ignored. Being handsome and "nice" does not change the fact that this is rape.
Let's talk about why this novel is not a novel. I don't know who made it into a novel from the webtoon, but it didn't work out. Maybe problems with the translation are to blame as well, but the structure alone is just so bad.

- chapters end in the middle of a conversation, and for no reason at all. No suspense, no plot twist. They end just because they HAVE TO end at a point
- transitions between different scenes are not bad, because they're NOT THERE at all. We go from one scene to the next and everything is just so confusing (MC "returns" to the carriage. The guy "returns" to give her food. She eats and then "returns" back to the carriage??)
- confusing actions that don't make sense physically
- soooo many repetitions are strange choices of words

I won't say more. If you enjoy the story, that's awesome, but it makes me so sad to see so many 5 star for a novel that can't even be called a novel. If you are interested, I suggest you go for the original webtoon.read-in-202226 s2 comments Noelle511 15

When I first got back into reading manga and manhwa I downloaded the Manta Comics app on my phone and was instantly intrigued by the summary of UNDER THE OAK TREE. The app allows you to read the first 4 chapters free, with a token for one free chapter unlocking every 24hrs, or you can buy a paid membership [$3.99 per month] that allows you to read as many chapters of whatever manga/manhwa you want. I was a bit nervous to get the unlimited membership, since I have so many books I want/need to read, afraid that I’d fall down a hole and lose track of time. *Nervous laugh* So instead I read the free chapters and slowly, patiently, waited as every 24hrs I was able to read one more chapter.

Around the time I started reading into the 20th chapter, or so, an ad popped up informing me that there was a novel version that contained chapters 1-39 and it happened to be on sale for 99 cents! Of course, I wanted to continue reading the manhwa, with its gorgeous artwork, but I decided to also start reading the novel as well to see how well they lined up with each other.

I’m so happy I decided to read the novel, as well as the manhwa, as the novel gave so many more inner thoughts, history, and context to the story. While reading the Manhwa, honestly the first few times Maxi and Riftan have sex, it seems he’s raping her because she’s saying no and her body language says she doesn’t want to participate. Reading those same scenes in the novel, [which are must steamier and graphic in description] we’re able to hear Maxi’s inner monologue which shows that although she didn’t give consent she does feel aroused and desire, she’s just so unfamiliar with those feelings she’s intimidated and nervous. The only education she was given, in regards to sex, was to lay still in order to perform her “marital duties” so she feels the sensations she feels, and any movements she makes, during sex might deem her bad at it or inappropriate.

The novel follows right along with all the chapters of the manhwa but adds so much more information that I’m glad I decided to read both in tandem. I highly recommend reading both the online manhwa as well as the novels so that you can fully understand, and appreciate the story.

I look forward to seeing the story develop as Maxi, hopefully, is able to learn and grow in her confidence. Maxi had such a horrible time growing up with an abusive father I’m excited to see her see she’s surrounded by people who care for and respect her. DNF at 33% I just can’t. This book is awful, at this point the blatant rape and consistent uncomfortable situations is just too much for me.
There are countless scenes where the main character repeatedly and clearly says no or asks him to stop and he doesn’t listen and proceeds to rape her. At 33% I don’t see any significance to this or any development of character, not that rape should be used in that way in the first place, but it’s just uncomfortable and poorly written.12 s Aya113 4

Amazing Story

I actually discovered this story from it's adaptation in Manta comics. I decided I wanted to read the original book, and found that it is by a Korean author. They offer the story on a Korean site called RidiBooks, and I've read the first book in it's entirety. The translation from Korean to English with Google Translate is a bit rough sometimes. That's why Idecided to purchase season 1 on Amazon. The translation here is great, and now it's in my Kindle library as a bonus! This is only part of the first book, but I promise Maxi and Riftian's story will suck you in. Maximilian is the daughter of a wealthy Lord, and she is married off to Riftian before he is sent off to slay a dragon. The story starts off 3 years later after the dragon campaign is complete. These two are complete strangers, and they struggle with communication. Seeing their growth throughout the story, especially Maxi's, is amazing. The author currently has the 2nd book out as well, (not sure if it's complete yet) and I can't wait to read it. Eu acho muito interessante observar essas obras coreanas porque eu consigo ver exatamente que em quesito: prazer feminino e mulheres admitirem que podem sentir prazer sem ter vergonha, essas obras estão no mesmo patamar das obras de romance dos EUA da década de 1980, com inclusive os mesmos tropes. as personagens falam não porque é o que é esperado delas, pq uma mulher aproveitar o prazer que vem do sexo é vergonhoso (e a Maxi sente MUITA vergonha, repetidas vezes, e fala isso), pq ela tem que ser modesta, ao mesmo tempo em que as autoras mostram a personagem gostando demais do que está acontecendo e o parceiro sendo atencioso ao prazer dela. Estoy obteniendo justo lo que buscaba con un plus de trama más o menos interesante, así que espero que esto se desarrolle mucho más en siguientes tomos.

Well it took me a month to read it because I had to wait 24h to read the next chapter but without that I could’ve finish it in one sitting.

It’s an easy read, doesn’t have that much going on, you don’t have to put your mind into it and the drawings are absolutely GORGEOUS.

but if you ask me what I ve read I couldn’t tell you. I understand it’s an arranged marriage, they didn’t know each other and all so I understood at the beginning how they were acting but it just stayed the same. They didn’t talk, Riftan was protective of her but didn’t talk to her, Maxi was too scared to do something on her own due to trauma but we don’t have any evolution. I still don’t see the alchemist between them. every time they get in a room together they f*ck ????? Where is the talking ? Where is the CONSENT ? Where is that ?
