Often, I choose a book that I can relate to, and other times, when the world is too overwhelming, I look for something to take me away from everything.

Having read Sue-Ellen Welfonder’s work before, I knew this book was a perfect choice. This author writes exquisite prose, and her storytelling is masterful. Feeling I could time travel myself right now, I hoped this book would do the trick. It did.

The blurb pretty much says it all, so I won’t recap too much in the review. What worked for me so well in this book was the main character, Margo’s passion for romance and for Scotland. Put them together: there was nothing better, nothing in life that could bring her more happiness, satisfaction, and yes, euphoria. So, when Margo wins a trip to Scotland and quickly wants to separate from the tour, well, relate I did, being a person who isn’t cut out for tours in any way.

I wish I could say that when I’ve been on my own in foreign lands that I’ve experienced what Margo did, but this book allowed me a bit of vicarious time travel. The author’s ability to write such descriptive, romantic, and authentic characters in stunning locales truly whisked me away. I adored the ending. I don’t know: it made me feel anything is possible.

Wow, I don’t even know where to start this review. This book has so much going on within the pages of this story. One must have an open mind and believe in things that go bump in the night to enjoy this book. I have read other books that have time travel in them but none this one. There is magic both white and very, very dark. Tons of history is given which sets the scenes wonderfully. Magnus MacBride is known as the Viking Slayer and is a legendary hero. He lives for revenge on Vikings for those who caused the death of his beloved. He for goes all women and most of anything else except fighting. Till he is cured by an evil witch and starts having dreams of a beautiful naked lady. But always just out of reach and in his dreams. Margo has loved everything about Scotland since she was very little. She lives for anything plaid and doing with the highlands. She knows she will never get to Scotland, but one can dream. She works in a New Age Shop, Ye Olde Pagan Times with a white witch and a fortune teller. Everyone in town comes to her for information on Scotland. Strange things happen in the shop all the time due to her boss, the witch trying new spells. Closing the shop by herself she sees Magnes MacBride in a very old book, she is shocked as the shoreline and highland warrior are straight out of her dreams! When she gets the chance to go to Scotland she jumps on it. But nothing is as she dreamed. Then fate, magic, time, all the above steps in and both Margo and Magnes will never be the same. There is a lot of fighting and bloodshed in this story. Along with a lot of misunderstanding and superstition too. Our couple has a lot to overcome and deal with. This is a steamy story if somewhat late in the book. Read with an open mind and maybe not alone at night, it is highly entertaining and fun read. Scary too. I love the old lady with black boots and tartan laces beware. Grab a copy and let your imagination lose to enjoy a very different romance story. This is the first book I read by this author but will not be the last. Nice to have something different from all the other romance stories out there.
