Superb Book

William Stroock is a master of the alternative history novel. I'm a huge fan of the genre and Stroock's World War 1990 series is the best I've ever read that covers the greatest what if of the 20th century: a clash between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. I have read many novels covering a "what if" WW3 but no one has ever covered the topic as thoroughly and completely than William Stroock. He covers not just a war on the inner German border but creatively plays out the war all over the globe. Stroock's story has fighting in Europe, Asia, Africa, North and Central America and the high seas. He takes you from the battlefield to the command post and to the offices of world leaders. The battle scenes are a pure adrenaline rush and being a combat vet myself I find the military action extremely accurate. The reader is put in the turret of a tank, the cockpit of a fighter jet and the bridge of a naval vessel. A hallmark of a Stroock book is the incredible detail in the story. He writes authoritatively on the capabilities of weapon systems and on the orders of battle for the participant nations. The strategic decisions made by world leaders and the tactical decisions made by military commanders are well developed and extremely plausible. The author's character development is also masterful. Stroock uses real life historical figures in his books and accurately portrays their personalities. He also creates fictional characters that are believable and easy to relate to as they experience the terror of a global war. This book is the final one of this series and it perfectly brought the story full circle. This book the others in the series is exciting and very well written. I highly recommend this novel and entire World War 1990 series. William Stroock has hit a home run with this book. William McLoughlin302 12

3/5. This series has been extremely frustrating. The order in which the books were published is very different from the order in which they should be read. Nowhere, however, is that communicated to the reader. I finally jumped ahead to read this, volume 9, after I finished volume 6, the action of which immediately precedes it. This chapter winds-up World War III with a conventional allied air campaign designed to destroy enough of the Soviet Union’s atomic forces to convince the Russians not to go nuclear. This effort, however, inflicts minimal damage and suffers significant losses. The saving grace is Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher launching her own improbable SAS attack on the Kremlin without telling the other allies. The raid also has improbable results. Too far-fetched for me. Finally, all books in the series, this one suffers greatly from the use of many incorrect and misspelled words. Graham1 review
