Not for me. Saw the MMMM, so all in. It was a spin off. The demons were sweet, but there was nothing really to it. It was soft fluff with no hiccups. Dakota was accepting straight off, although a shame he didn't meet Hella. I d how Nico stuck to doing things the human way and how Ryk was with his future in-laws. It was pretty much a fated mates sunday walk. Was hoping for a little drama or some sort of bump in the road. 3.75/5 This is a sweet, low-angst slice-of-life story. Although three of the MCs are demons, we don’t actually see a lot of magic or paranormal shenanigans, as Dakota doesn’t know the truth about them for most of the book, and they spend most of their time relaxing and enjoying being in the human realm in their house.

I thought Stella did a good job of making each of their personalities and voices distinct, so I always knew whose POV I was in, but for me, the story suffered a little from so many POVs; we just didn’t get to spend very much time in any one person’s story. I did think it was well-balanced between the four of them, and I enjoyed seeing them navigate being together and actually having discussions and communicating.

I d the growing lore about demons amidst the wider Otherworld and Afterworld universe. I would have enjoyed a little more discussion between the four of them about preferred form, etc., once Dakota knows the truth. I d Moon and Cherry and Dakota’s parents. Overall, we had a lot of quirky, genuine people here, and that was lovely to read about.

We only got little hints in this book about the more overarching story of the escaped dark souls. If this story is any indication, it will be a low-key backdrop, or perhaps it will pick up more in future books.

I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest review. 1 Zoë Miranda350 5

1st person, past tense, multi POV.

Dakota King, human
Nico, demon
Ryk, demon
Star, demon

This premise of this books was adorable and I was pretty excited to dive in as mistaken/secret/hidden identity is my favourite romance trope. I loved the idea of the three demons trying to integrate with humanity and avoid having their human roommate catch on that they were anything but human. There were hints sprinkled throughout the book, but I just wanted more, though the cult excuse was a particular stroke of genius and I loved how it explained a lot of their odd behaviour to Dakota and yet prevented a lot of follow up questions - brilliant!.

Unfortunately, fated mates is not one of my favourite tropes as I feel it is sometimes relied on too heavily to carry the story rather than have the characters develop genuine relationships and this books didn't do much to counter my preconception. It doesn't bother me in a novella format but with a book of this length it feels a little disingenuous I did love the little hiccup in how demons were initially prevented from seeing their mate bonds but it felt a little anticlimactic a resolution. There were moments, than hinted that feelings were developing between Dakota, Nico, Ryk, and Star, but again, I just wanted more, it was very mundane without much depth.

The characters were not very well-rounded or developed, in fact, they felt about as fleshed out as secondary/supporting characters with one or two character traits or quirks. The worldbuilding was equally pithy. This is my only my second Stella Rainbow experience and while I'm sure fans of her work were thrilled with the cameos of other characters from other books I had a difficult time keeping them straight and understanding their place in this story. I have not read her Otherworld series so I'm not sure if the missing context and worldbuilding (Otherworld, Afterworld, Underworld, dark souls, demon realm, etc.) would have been established there of if it is more of a matter of writing style.

In either case, while there were a lot of things I loved about the story - Dakota's friend, Divya, and her teasing friendship; his cat, Moon, and dog, Candy, and how they react to the demons; his parents and their easy acceptance of the roommates first as roommates/friends and then as partners to their son - there were enough aspects that impeded my personal enjoyment of the story.guess-who mm-mmm-and-other-lgbt-cuties rh-menage-sharing-is-caring ...more Aysha160 5

Demon Roommates is the first book in the Demon Dabacles series and can be read as a standalone. There is a prequel to this series (Summoning Chaos). This series is also in the same world as all the Mistvale series, both the Otherworld series, the Innocent Monsters series and the upcoming Sanctuary series.

I can always rely on Stella Rainbow for sweet adorableness! This week I’ve read lots of books, but haven’t enjoyed very many of them, this low angst read was just what I needed!

Above I said this book can be read as a standalone, but I wanted to expand a bit on why I think this: the MCs get a HEA, and they don’t have a large presence in any other books. However, the plot line with the dark souls is a continuation of an another series. The majority of the plot is focused on the main characters and their developing relationship. I would class the dark souls plot line as minor and it doesn’t get resolved in this book (I think it will continue in the next books) so this is why I class is it as a standalone.

The plot was nice and easy to read, the low angst and simple plot allowed the characters to be well developed and able. I felt I knew who the characters were and were about to easily distinguish between them, which is sometimes hard if you have a large group of MCs. I really d how Stella Rainbow presented these characters, they were all unique and considering this book wasn’t very long, I felt satisfied with this read. However, due to the size, this book was a slow burn so I do wish we saw a bit more of their HEA.

Ryk is a golden retriever - he’s enthusiastic, honest, joyful and an artist.
Star is sarcastic, caring, protective and he sleeps a lot which is kind of adorable. (The reason he does this is because of how old he is).
Nico is thoughtful, looks after everybody, s cooking and cleaning. He always felt an outsider when with the other demons and is enjoying being in the human world.
These three demons have spent centuries being friends in the demon world, however, when a problem arises, all the demons go to the human world. Nico, Star and Ryk move in with Dakota.
Dakota is the human who these three demons move in with. He’s responsible, patient and kind. His parents are awesome, I d that they were supportive as I feel that’s quite rare.

I really enjoyed seeing these four come together and develop their relationship. I love Rainbow’s world but if you’re not aware of it from previous books, you probably won’t be very aware of it from just reading this. I d that the emotions from this book didn’t cause me to feel anything extreme crying or laughing, Demon Roommates was the ideal comfort read.

This book contains sensitive content such as homophobia.
