Do you dogs in a mystery? This book is for you. Dan Mahoney is an insurance investigator. A fire and the death of 5 racing greyhounds at the Daytona race track is new assignment. Arriving with his fiancee, Elaine he heads for the office. Elaine goes for a walk and meets meets Sadie who was in the fire wondering alone. Sadie brings Elaine a bloody glove which she bags and forget. Dan starts inquiry into the death of the dogs and who was responsible. He must prove that the insured party was not involved in the deaths of the dogs. This a first time for me. I found Dan and Elaine described well along with supporting characters and region. This the third book in the series but can be read as a stand alone. I will be looking for first two to read.e-books3 s Laura Thomas1,441 89

It’s supposed to be kind of their practice honeymoon. Soon to be married, Dan entices his fiancee Elaine to spend some time with him in tropical Florida. He works an an investigator for United Life and Casualty. They have a case he needs to check out. Five prized dogs were lost in a fire at the Greyhound Racing Park. Things look all in order and Dan can steal some quality time with Elaine. Should be an easy wrap.

That is until Elaine stumbles upon a stray dog while taking a walk and the dog has a clue in it’s mouth.

I was drawn to this book because of the Greyhound racing. I live in Alabama and we don’t have horse racing, which I love. I was introduced to the Mobile Greyhound Racing Club and found it just as fun and exciting. I was an amateur and chose my bets by catchy names for the dogs. Never did win much but I loved watching those elegant, sleek dogs chase that rabbit.

I did enjoy the characters. Each had their own mysteries. Dan had to determine if the insurance company should pay off on the fire and the lost greyhounds. Elaine was getting her P.I. license and working a case for her mother-in law, Maggie. And Maggie was worried that her new fiance, Stanley, might be someone other than he who says he is.

In an area renowned for ex mobsters provided with new identities from the witness protection agency, who knows who Stanley really is. About to uproot herself and move to Palm Beach, Maggie wants to make sure she doesn’t have a rotten apple from the barrel.

And lets not forget Fucher. What a sweetie. He’s a bit slow but loves the dogs and taking care of them, especially his beloved Sadie. An employee at the track, he’s the perfect patsy for the cops to arrest. It’s not just arson either. Kennel owner, Jackson Sanchez, was found stabbed to death with the word thief carved into his forehead. Could Fucher have done it? He recently came into a lot of money and perhaps he loaned some to Jackson , and he wasn’t paying it back?

The police believe they have their man and are content to look no further.

Mystery upon mystery, the plot is afoot. I was kept on my toes, for sure. The author had me going in circles and, until the smoke cleared, I had no idea who the true culprit or culprits were.

I chased that rabbit and got my reward.

I received this book for my honest review.2 s Cobwebby Eldritch SpaceReader Reindeer 5,375 308

REVIEW: HAIR OF THE DOG by Susan Slater

Next up in the Dan Mahoney mystery series is HAIR OF THE DOG. Poor private investigator Dan, he's had some rough and dangerous experiences lately! But the upshot is good--he s engaged, and now he'd some vacation time. Too bad: what he gets is a "working vacation" in Florida, Daytona Beach, to be exact. Dan is tasked with investigating an arson at a greyhound racing track, which killed five greyhounds, sadly, plus a murder there that occurred the same night.

Readers intrigued by what greyhound racing consists of will be educated; and after the book, author Susan Slater presents important information on active greyhound retirement and rescue.2015_july-ca_us_author_lop 2015_reads 2015_world_book_challenge_lp ...more2 s Victor Gentile2,035 63

Susan Slater in her new book, “Hair Of The Dog” Book Four in the Dan Mahoney Mystery series published by Poisoned Pen Press gives us another adventure with Dan Mahoney.

From the back cover: It sounds some work and mostly play when United Life and Casualty sends its investigator Dan Mahoney to Florida. Five greyhounds?all heavily insured?were lost in a fire at the Daytona dog track.

So simple. Five dogs dead by smoke inhalation, bagged, tagged, and cremated. Papers all in order. Ashes in specialty urns on the desk of Dixie Halifax, track and casino co-owner. In jail, a young employee charged with arson to cover a murder he’s blamed for committing.

Then the body of kennel owner Jackson Sanchez is found face down in a pool of blood, a knife stuck in his back. But Sanchez didn’t die from a knife wound. Someone has carved “thief” on his forehead. The blood pooled underneath his body isn’t his. Should Dan be looking for a second corpse? And the one man who can answer questions, the track vet, dies in a motorcycle accident.

Working this case is not as complicated for Dan as having his mother Maggie move into the FBI’s favorite mob slob haven in nearby Palm Coast, while his fiancée Elaine Linden, on sabbatical, works on a PI license. Perfect?the FBI can set Maggie up to spy on her boyfriend who may be laundering cash in some geriatric mafia scheme in this follow-up to Flash Flood and Rollover.

I thought that this was one of the more interesting types of cases I have ever had the pleasure to read. Up until this case I have never found a mystery involving dog racing, dog betting and the dog track. This is one exciting case. I only knew dog racing from an occasional glimpse on television. I had no idea it could be so dangerous. Danger, mayhem, thrills and murder all figure into this highly complicated plot. Dan Mahoney works for an insurance company, which is another new interest for me. I am just used to private investigators. Dan is a lot of fun and a highly interesting character. He also has a lot going on in his private life that is also very interesting. “Hair Of The Dog” is loaded with twists and turns and red herrings that will leave you guessing all the while you are flipping pages to find out what happens next. Ms. Slater has provided us with a fairly exciting book. I am glad I found this talented unique author and am so looking forward to the next book in this series.

This was ok. A complicated mystery with tons of characters, each involved somehow in the untangled reveal. Don't expect any great twist, though, or a surprise ending. You will love the good-guys and despise the bad-guys from the moment you meet them. Also, don't get the idea that this is in any way a dog-book - no dog proves to be heroic or even of invaluably helpful. On top of that, the sympathy of these "dog lovers" just doesn't shine through - at one point the bereaved kennel owner sheds some tears and I'm reminded - oh yeah, she's sad because her dogs died. But I didn't really feel it; many times it seemed the dogs were just second string and not exactly main players. I did that there were dogs in the story - greyhounds, anyway, and one pet rottweiler (not a main character). But again, the author didn't really seem to grasp the true nature of dogs and tended towards anthropomorphism, which seems out of date.

Fun was the setting in Daytona Beach, FL. The author is spot-on with the atmosphere of living and working in Florida - from gated retirement villages to bus loads of casino tourists to Bonefish Grill. So the whole thing was fun but contrived, not based on the dogs all that much, and a quick, light read. Not sure I would look up another.crime dog mystery ...more1 Manca76 4

I rarely have such mixed feelings about a book. I love that it includes dogs, I hate that it includes racing dogs. Although, it does say that greyhounds are much more than racers, too, and it even describes adoptions/adoption programs, so there are definitely some teachable moments.
To sum up:
I d the dogs. All the dogs. Obviously.
I d the characters. Many were pleasant and/or interesting, the annoying ones were few. And all met proper fate.
I d the ending. Which was happy for all the dogs. Even the dead ones.
I didn't the mob - it's just not my favorite topic/genre/whatever.
It was hard for me to read about dog racing, dog betting, track preparation, etc. You know, having adopted a retired sighthound myself.
But all in all - not bad. 4 stars, because Goodreads doesn't do things halfway. kobo there-s-a-sighthound Hope ChaseAuthor 3 books2

Owing greyhounds myself, this book spoke to me loud and clear. The characters were diverse and well fleshed out. I enjoyed Elaine's path to a new career. The plot was quite interesting and the mystery well presented. I thoroughly enjoyed the details of the greyhound lives at the kennel, which was well researched. The quality of this book leads me to search out the other Dan Mahoney Mystery books. Lee1,039 13

I’m not fond of dog racing so I started not to even read this book but it is not about dog racing; it is about dogs though. In fact it’s a great twisted and turned and twisted back on itself again story of betrayal. This author has a way with words and a great imagination to put an incredibly good story together!! Really good mystery. Made me want to read more of her books. :-) Danny Seipel104 4

Inane drivel.

Two stars. One and a half of those are for the dogs.

Gets four stars average on Goodreads. I assume if you go past chapter two the dogs get more story time. Monzell Taylor97 1 follower

Hair of the Dog by Susan Slater is a cozy mystery that is not quite so cozy. If you are a dog lover, this one is for you. It has a cast of characters that will have you sifting through the evidence in search of the guilty party. Susan did not make it easy for me to find the answers I was looking for, but she did make the journey enjoyable.

Fucher Crumm most always has his faithful dog, Sadie, at his side, until now. She has been missing since the murder of one of Daytona's biggest kennel owners and the fire at the Daytona track. Aww no. I don't want anything to happen to her.

Fucher had won a settlement against the city when he was hit by one of their trucks. He is a bit slow, friendly and generous with his money, but his main love is the dogs at the kennel. He loves working with them and went above and beyond to save them during the fire. Now he is accused of causing the fire and murdering Sanchez. Is he an easy target for a frame-up or is he guilty?

Dan was on his honeymoon with Elaine in Daytona. When his boss, United Life and Casualty called about the fire and the missing dogs, he figured he could mix business with pleasure. Elaine was game, in fact she was ready to make a career change and thought now was the perfect time. She was going to train to become a private investigator and they could team up. Her job is snooping and she thought that quite funny.

I loved Dan's description of his dog's, Simon's, doggy resort. A bed, a pool and plenty of toys for the pushy Rottweiler.

Susan Slater mentioned that Elaine was surprised at all the pine trees in Florida. I thought that was funny, because I marveled at the same when I moved here. Florida is so much more than sand and palm trees.

Dan went to the track and Elaine went for a walk, thus we meet Sadie and the picture on the cover delivers a clue.

The treatment of Fucher by the guard in the jail really pissed me off. It is deplorable and mean and I would to reach into the pages and punch him. The warden seems okay, or is he just covering his butt?

Dixie Halifax is a co-owner of the track and has five of her dogs kenneled there. Now they are missing. Bit suspicious don't you think? I love Susan Slater's description of Dixie, she has the characteristics of a greyhound. Isn't it a common theme that owners take on the looks of the critters they own? What about if you own a lizard? LOL

Susan Slater proves she is a talented author by including so many plots and subplots into a Hair of the Dog, her latest cozy mystery. The cast of characters are interesting and the murderer...well, Susan had a surprise or two for me. I enjoyed the humorous writing and lively banter that comes with a cozy mystery, making it easy to relate to the characters. I look forward to reading more of her work.

I received an ARC of Hair of the Dog by Susan Slater in return for and honest and unbiased review.

I would to thank NetGalley and Poisoned Press Ink for the opportunity of providing me with a copy to read for my honest review.

I've not read any of the Dan Mahoney mysteries and it's my lose. Dan's sense of justice is another one of the reasons I loved this book. I really loved the way the book flowed with a lots of humor and plus a couple of other plot lines going on. One involved Dan's finance and his mother which was quite funny.

Dan is an investigator for an Insurance company that is sent out to a dog track that has been burnt down and several greyhounds have supposable been killed in the process. They also find a very nasty man had been murdered in the process, was the fire to collect on the insurance or to cover up the death? The police are sure they have their man who is considered slightly slow that works the dogs out at the kennel and sometimes he stays late into the night taking care of them so he ends up sleeping in the kennel office. That night he did and he saved most of the dogs and risked his own life doing it. He stumbles over the body of a very nasty man who is fellow breeder and racer who loves to cause trouble. He tries to pulls him to safety then finds there is a butcher knife in his back he pulls the knife out of his back which of course is then covered with the young man's prints. But when he returns to get the man the man had been moved. The police of course doesn't believe him and arrests him for the murder and arson. Dan doesn't believe the young man did it for a minute and tries everything he can to prove it. The young man just doesn't have it in him.

Susan, Dan's fiancee is looking into getting her PI licence because she is getting tired of teaching. So she's starting getting her credits and her first job is to help her future mother-in-law in finding out about her new fiance. Susan finds out that he is no where close to being who he seems to be.

I loved this book and if you love dogs and mysteries as much as I do I think you will too. I can wait to read more about Dan and Susan.mystery-series Devin71 6

Hair of the Dog is the third novel in the Dan Mahoney series by author Susan Slater. Dan is an investigator for the insurance company United Life and Casualty. This time around he's sent to Florida, where five racing greyhounds, all heavily insured, were lost in a fire - not to mention an employee was found dead in a pool of blood with the word "thief" carved on his forehead, too. While everything initially seems to be nothing but dead ends for Dan, over time pieces of the puzzle come to light.

I've got mixed feelings about this novel. I did enjoy the mystery, it had a lot of uniqueness to it, not to mention plenty of twists. However, I didn't really care for all of the writing. For starters, the beginning was a bit bland and it took a bit longer than I'd have d before things began getting interesting, however in the grand scheme of things that's not the big issue. I felt that the book kept going off on tangents, almost sub-mysteries, and I was wondering how it related to the plot. Then finally, after a while, it was revealed where the tangent was going and how it related to the fire and murder mystery Dan was investigating. I don't mind if books jump around this, I just felt that in this particular novel it did it a bit too much and went off a bit too far before bringing things back to home plate.

I don't want to say too much about the twists as it'd spoil parts of the plot, however I do want to make it clear that I did enjoy all the twists and how people appeared innocent and unrelated to the fire/murder before the truth was brought to light. I definitely didn't expect a lot of what ended up happening! The main mystery in Hair of the Dog was very well thought out.

Thanks to Poisoned Pen Press/NetGalley for the eARC and reading and review opportunity. You can find more book this one on Devin's Book Hub. Lelia Taylor872 18

Sometimes, the best part of reading is in re-discovering an old "friend" and that was certainly the case for me with Hair of the Dog. I first encountered author Susan Slater and her protagonist, Dan Mahoney, almost 13 years ago with Flash Flood and d it very much but then it seemed Ms. Slater sort of vanished (and, in fact, she sort of did for a long time). I had found her other series featuring Ben Pecos but it was Dan Mahoney I really wanted to see again.

In 2014, his second adventure showed up in Rollover but I just plain missed it so when I heard about Hair of the Dog I was immensely excited and still am, even though I now need to go find Rollover so I can catch up on all Dan's doings. This third book was a nice re-entry for me because I found the whole concept of murder and mayhem in the dog racing world to be not only very interesting but also a good way for people to learn a little about these wonderful dogs. Yes, it's sad to read about the deaths that bring Dan to Florida but readers can be assured that Ms. Slater and, by extension, Dan, treat the subject with compassion and sensitivity. It doesn't hurt that a delightful greyhound named Sadie captured my heart.

This is a mystery so, of course, there are crimes against humans and both humans and greyhounds keep Dan busy and on the alert. Meanwhile, Dan's fiancee, Elaine, falls for sweet Sadie---who wouldn't?---and uses her private-investigator-in-training skills to help Dan get to the bottom of things.

Now that Susan Slater is back in my book world, I'll be looking for much more but, while I wait, I'll be looking into A Ticket Home, a suggestion from the author for supporting retired greyhounds. I can't think of a better way to conclude this particular adventure.full- Amber PoloAuthor 14 books161

Things really heat up when Dan Mahoney and his PI in training fiancée arrive in Florida to investigate the deaths of five valuable racing greyhounds. Of course all is not what in seems with the fire that killed the dogs, a murder, and a gentle caretaker arrested. As Dan and Eileen settle into temporary life near the beach, Simon their Rottie joins them, and Dan’s mother adopts a greyhound and prepares to buy a house with her new boyfriend.

The greyhound adoption issues are handled well with a lot of information about rescue dogs prepared in prisons for rehoming, Grey2K a greyhound protection organization, and the transport of dogs getting their second time around. I was surprised that some dogs were trained for agility in prison. I’d love to see that. No horror stories on the cruelty of racing. Even an ad to donate to a group that transports retired racing greyhounds. Oh, and a well done mystery.

Dan Mahoney, an insurance company investigator was sent from his home in Arizona to investigate a claim in Daytona Beach, Florida. So he brought along his fiancé and decided to enjoy a vacation while investigating. There had been a fire at the Daytona Dog Track and 5 heavily insured greyhound racing dogs were missing. The owner claimed to have their cremated remains in urns on her desk. However once Dan started investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire, he began to doubt that the dogs were really dead. Then his fiancé began to train as a private investigator and her first assignment leads her to Dan's mother's new boyfriend, who may not be who he claims to be.
The story examines the world of greyhound racing as well as the federal witness protection program and minimum security federal prisons. Amy Thorleifson231 1 follower

The third book in the series featuring Dan Mahoney, an investigator for a large insurance company, this case takes him to Florida. When a fire destroys part of a kennel and five top racing greyhounds are claimed to be dead, Dan is assigned to the Daytona dog racing track. A body was also found and an arrest made before Dan arrives. Dan's fiancée, Elaine is with him and is working with a private investigator as she contemplates a change in profession. Dan's mother, Maggie, also arrives in Florida with her new boyfriend Stanley who has given her cause for suspicion as to his real background.
Many elements all come together nicely, and the case is resolved after we have learned much about greyhound racing and rescue. Carolyn Anderson6

This is the third in a series of Dan Mahoney mysteries. A bit slow at the start, but it quickly picked up and then became a great story about greyhounds, money laundering, murder mysteries (of course), and relationships. I enjoyed the growing relationship of Dan and Elaine and Dan's mother. And the twists and turns and complications were compelling. Kevin311
