Sinopsis

Death Lords. Celebrations. And arcanists plotting to destroy Astra Academy from within.

Gray Lexly thought he had defeated the fragment of Death Lord Deimos, but GrayÂ’s dreams are now haunted by a sinister ruler of the abyssal hells.

Luckily for everyone in Astra Academy, it seems Deimos won’t be escaping the dreamscape anytime soon. Unfortunately for Gray, this means he’s stuck with the Death Lord. So, when Deimos’s followers—and enemies—come looking for him, it’s Gray who stands in their way.

And with cultists planning something sinister, Gray must find a way to rid himself of Deimos’s presence—while he still can.

There are two facts you should know about me.
1. I don't magic school books.
2. Shami Stovall books are the exception to every rule

This book in particular is where I really began to notice the author's growth from the previous books in this world. (Note: You don't have to have the Frith Chronicles to understand this series, but it will spoil some plot points from the former.) For example, I noted in the Frith Chronicles that it took awhile for it to feel an ensemble cast. But in this series, the ensemble nature has jumped out much more quickly. Other characters are getting their arcs, their victories and romances. And while Volke is still my favorite character archetype, Gray is growing on me. Especially as his determination around Ashlyn will prevent another love pentagon. xD

When it comes to the plot, my memory is... hazy. For personal reasons, I ended up taking a long break from reviewing altogether when I was 2/3 of the way through the book. But I do remember it felt a bit meandering. Namely because the characters begin it by just going to classes and trying to recover from everything that happened before. The ending also felt a bit smaller than I'm used to feeling from Shami Stovall's works. It's still a nice juicy twist that sets up the next book perfectly, but I hope that one will have her usual gigantic climax with fantasy kaiju and/or explosions. (Preferably both.)

For themes, I continue to enjoy the study of economic class and it's effect among magic users. The idea that being an immortal being with access to otherworldly magic still can't save you from being looked down on for growing up poor is a poignant analogy. This book also emphasizes the magic-based prejudice in the world, with nobility lording their dragons over everyone and turning up their noses at any eldrin deemed "lesser." As a whole, the series continues to flesh out the social strata in the world and it's interesting to see the implications on character relationships.

I mentioned before, magic school books aren't my usual cup of tea. So while this book is a four star for me, it has a very big chance of being a perfect five star for someone that usually s them. But if you're me and you struggle with that type of setting, this one is still worth taking the risk. Travis2,441 33

Abyssal Archanist is the third book in this series, and while the deleted scene seems to indicate this was the last book in the series, I see there is a fourth book to be published in March, so that's good, because leaving it where it is would be a tough sell to get folks to read the series as it stands. It's a good story for sure, and I'm glad there's more coming, I'll be keeping an eye on this line of books, because I really this series. I'm still debating with myself whether I'll read the other series that comes before this one or not, since I'm thinking it might blow away some of my enjoyment of this series. I may wait until there's been a few more books in this series before breaking down and reading the other one.

Still Loving It

I am so engaged and invested in this series. I'm reading through them so quickly that before I know it, i'm at the end of the book, and I immediately want to leap into the next one. I love the friendships forming and growing between the characters. I have to keep reminding myself of how young Grey is, and in his naivete, he equates wanting to fix something with being able to fix it. There are still typos such as "It had a flat metal head on the head." So, while this typo was annoying, there were other typos that changed the intended meaning of the author. "It was as debilitating as before... But still it worried me." Clearly, this should read, "it wasn't as debilitating..." Despite the typos, I still had my laugh out loud moments, loved the artwork and the use of the word " tangential.". On to the next one. Dan Drane8 1 follower

Great plot, magic, and characters continue in this tale.

Shami has such great creativity in magical realm building, creating creatures and magic works. This book had a lot of children prevailing where adult characters all seem incompetent, but the story is great. I cannot wait to see the big picture villain plot of this series and look forward to the build of characters and new magical creatures.

The main character, Gray had good bit of build in this, but the balance of capable adult role models vs young rookie luck seems off... when compared to Frith Chronicles.. just a thought. Henry22

Shami Stovall Does it Again

When the Frith Chronicles finished I thought she could not ride as high in the literary clouds. But the Astra Academy series goes from strength to strength, each new book leaving the reader wanting more than from the last book. I am love the relationships that are building in the young arcanists and I have now idea where this story will end.

However I still want moreÂ… bring on Death Lord Arcanist. For Shami ad her characters 5 stars is simply not enoughÂ… George Rokkos159 1 follower

I love this series so much. Shami is such an amazing author I love every aspect of her books. She creates such amazing character that you want to keep on reading. The world she creates is so awesome with every book adding more and more. I love the magic system so much as well and how each person in the book uses it such creative and interesting ways. I loved the focus on the Grey and I loved how the other main characters were able to shine in this book as well. I can highly recommend this book and this series. I can not wait for book 4! Jason29

A very good book

I really enjoyed this book. The characters really pull it together. I donÂ’t think the book would be as good as it is with theses specific characters.

I really only have two gripes about the book.

- There were some typos

- I thought some of the word choice was a bit strange for the setting

Other than that, itÂ’s a fantastic book. Characters, Story, Setting, they are all amazing. Frith Chronicles will always have a special place in my heart, but Astra Academy is a close second. Shaun26 5

I want more, and more eldrin!

I love this seriesÂ… all the eldrin are so well imagined, I canÂ’t get enough of them. And this storyline about the Abyssal Hells is incredibly fascinating. I just wish the stakes had been significantly raised earlier than the very end of the book, because holy hell (or should I say accursed abyss?), the end of this book is a doozy. Gray and Twain are officially badasses. Paul Alcantara132

a gift

Shami has a gift when it comes to creating worlds, characters, and scenarios that get readers invested. Shown time and time again through each book she releases, this one being no different. This was riveting and captivating and hard to put down. The only downside is how the next book hasnÂ’t released yet. Josh Stricklen14

I need more!

IÂ’ve read everything from the Frith Chronicles through this newest addition and I need to see these characters and the entire story brought to life on the big screen already! Movie or tv show, I donÂ’t care! Most entertaining books IÂ’ve read in awhile! CanÂ’t wait for the next one! Clinton Boxley24

Another great read.

Another satisfying chapter to the continuing tale of the Arcanists and Eldrin of the Astra Academy. I just wish I didn't have to wait for the next book to arrive! Matt Cline6

Cliffhanger warning

While I loved the book I despise the cliffhanger ending. When do we get the next volume? Will we get the full story? Sigh... Andres Soto14 4
