Confession: I'm kind of a Whatever After junkie. My niece got me hooked on the series, and now I've gotten my whole fourth grade class hooked on the series (even a boy who has read all of them!). With most series I'm okay to read one or two to get the gist of it, but I thoroughly enjoy every one of these! I even got a library card at the library the next county over because they had this book, and my library hadn't ordered it yet. Love, love, love!

Update: Listened to the audio version with my boys on the way back from camp. We love this series!8-audio-books mg-fantasy series-whatever-after ...more7 s Robyn1,993 128

I LOVE this book!!

What a great book for middle schoolers to read! It radiates confidence, joy, and fun. I am thinking about going house hunting to find a house with a magic mirror in it... because I wanna go with Abby and Jonah. Using the Princess and the Pea, we learn the qualities of a real princess and how to find one.... So much better than a princess that can't sleep on a lumpy bumpy mattress pile with a pea at the bottom. Things flexibility, adaptability, kindness, intelligence, and strength are better qualities in our princesses to look for than neediness or weakness.

4 stars

Happy Reading!

This is the thirteenth title I have read a book in this series. I have been reading these stories with my girls for over 7 years now. I read a few of these stories with my oldest starting in 2016. Now my youngest is reading them to me. Last year for Christmas her older brother even bought her the next 3 titles she needed because he enjoys listening to the stories. My youngest now insists we review everything that we read together, so this review from 2023 is part of that effort. And my youngest has been writing her own of the books she has finished for the last year and is planning on starting her own book blog. Between reading with my oldest and youngest this is the nineteenth time I have read a book in this series. The stories have great staying power. Even as an adult I enjoy these books, not only the first time but rereading them again and again.

Mlynowski as does a wonderful job with the story in this book, and all we have read in the series so far. The whole family loves these stories from 8-years old to 80 years old. For they have been read to grandma in the car on road trips by both the girls. This is another great read in a fantastic series. The stories are always fun and extremely entertaining, but they also have some valuable lessons and insight.

My youngest daughter and I both give this story a solid 5/5 stars, she says this is a not as dark as the last few, but also much more interesting. She was surprised by the turn in the story during the invasion. This story had a number of twists and turns that we had not guessed and took us by surprise. She was totally taken by what happened at the end. She also always wonders what the change in the jewellery box will be at the end of the story.

The description of this story is:

“This hilarious novel in the New York Times –bestselling series fractures the beloved fairy-tale of The Princess and the Pea . . .

I’ve landed—along with my brother, Jonah, and our dog, Prince—on the other side of the portal . . . and in the fairy tale of The Princess and the Pea! When I can’t fall asleep on top of a hundred mattresses, the kingdom decides I must be the princess they’re looking for. Talk about royal treatment—I’m suddenly being waited on hand and foot. Plus, I get unlimited ball gowns, sparkly jewellery, and ice cream. But can we find a REAL princess to run the kingdom? Now we have to:

We both enjoyed Abby’s and Jonah’s growth in this story, and the growth and changes in some of the princess candidates during the challenges and when trying to save the kingdom. They both are also continuing to be better at troubleshooting issues and problems during their adventures. I was surprised by some of the twists in this one. It is aother good read in a great series.

We always enjoy Mlynowski’s twists and takes on old tales. This is a great take on another familiar tale. The writing in these stories is excellent. My daughters and I love reading them together. The retelling of this story surprised both of us at and I am certain it will surprise you. It is a great book in an excellent series.

I started ready Whatever After when it first came out, and I still read the books as they come out.

Abby is an interesting character whose flaws are not ignored. She's very bossy, and she always learns a lesson from going into fairy tales.

In this book, she majorly messed up The Princess and the Pea. I really d how she came up with a new contest, though. Sensitive skin shouldn't make a girl a princess!

And Jonah rocked, as usual. He d his ketchup and was the annoying but sweet younger brother. This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.Show full review2 s Charlie128 6

Imagine moving into a new house and finding a magic mirror that takes you to different fairy tale lands? Two children named Abby and Jonah do just this in the Whatever After series. This adventure lands them in the story, Princess and the Pea. In the land of Bog, the people in the castle think that Abby is their missing princess, based off the fact that she could not sleep on top of all of the mattresses. Abby does not being in charge so she holds a contest in order to find the rightful princess. During this contest, Abby looks for a princess who is brave, smart, and creative. Through various challenges, Abby narrows down the girls to the final three, who she believes would best serve the castle’s best interests. When Abby is about to crown the princess, Prince Micha from the land of Bug captures Abby, Jonah, and the contestants so that he could rule. Using everyone’s talents, they escape Prince Micha and retaketheir kingdom. Since Belly, originally the castle’s maid, steps up to be the most quick-thinking of the group, everyone decides that she deserves to be the new princess of Bog. Now that their mission is complete, Abby and Jonah go back to reality.
For readers who love fairy tales, this series is for them! Each fairy tale is modernized, bringing in elements from current everyday life. Abby and Jonah are dynamic; talking to the fairy tale characters in a way that a normal eleven and seven-year-old from the millennium would. Additionally, they learn a lesson through their experiences. In this story, Abby and Jonah learn about the importance of teamwork and how, together, people can accomplish more than if they work alone. Young readers who love fairy tales and adventure will love this series.kids-books Meg McGregor3,997 80

This is the eleventh book in the Whatever Ever series!

Have you ever wanted to be part of a fairy tale? I sure have! I have always wanted to meet famous fairy tale characters - Rapunzel, Snow White, Cinderella, etc.

But the fairy tale, I would really want to be in, is Beauty and the Beast! That story has always been my favorite to read!

But I digress!

In this story, Abby and Jonah are drawn, into the fairy tale of The Princess and the Pea!

Abby is made the Princess of the Kingdom of Bog! The royal advisors believe her to be the Princess because she had a terrible night's sleep on a bed of 100 mattresses; a tiny pea was put under the very first mattress!

But Abby didn't have a bad nights sleep because of the pea; instead, she was very scared of being on a bed 100 mattresses high! I would be too!

Now, Abby and Jonah have to figure out how to find the real girl to be the Princess of Bog. So Abby decides to have a Contest for all the eligible young women of Bog.

The contestants will be judged on intelligence, bravery, kindness and being able to speak in front of the court and her subjects.

They also need to get home before their Mom and Dad wake up!

The part of the story, I d best, was when Abby realized --

"Everyone needs help. It's all about teamwork.I think about an expression I've heard my nana use: Sometimes, it takes a village. That means, when people pitch in together, great things can happen.

Sometimes, it does take a village. And I guess sometimes, it takes a kingdom. With an alligator. And good friends."

I look forward to reading the next book in the series! (less)fairy-tales Joan2,121

It rather seems to me that Mlynowski used Holub’s inspiration to retell mythology by using modern kids and twists, only using folktales instead. I’m not too sure I’m thrilled with the way she’s carrying out the concept. This is certainly not where I should have started since I’ve always been irritated by this story. Princesses were supposed to be so frail and fragile that they could feel a pea through 100 mattresses. Aggravating. The same person who was then supposed to bear the heir with no painkillers. Luckily the author firmly rejects the frail princess notion. However, I found the story questionable in many ways. The aggravating Prince gets put down and reformed far too easily. I hope the winning princess gets more of a choice in future marriage than that blustering bully. The minister is quite uninterested in assuming the throne which makes a nice change but also seems odd. I also am not so certain that the heroine really learned an appropriate lesson from the story, but I could be wrong there. I probably should try one more before giving up on this series. More of a 2.5 I suppose. 3-4-fiction 5-6-fiction animals ...more zapkode1,046 84

{My thoughts} – Abby, Jonah and their awesome dog Prince take a trip through the mirror once again. This time they end up in the story “a princess and a pea.” When they enter the story they are chased by an alligator and end up frantically knocking in the castle door. When they are letting in they are treated royalty.

Abby is put through the pea test to determine if she is a princess or not. She had problems sleeping but not because of a pea. She us then named Princess of Bog.

Abby knows she can’t remain the Princess so she puts together a competition so that they can find a true Princess. A lot happens after this point and if your interested in learning more, I’d suggest reading the book.

I highly recommend this book for those that have read the previous books in the series. Also for anyone that enjoys fairytale retellings. These books are incredible and will make great additions to any child’s library.childrens hardcover middle-school ...more Dina256 3

I've read the first ten books in this series aloud to my 6 and 9-year-old grandsons over Skype though the older one could read them himself. They are great--imaginative and with good lessons that the narrator, Abby, has learned through each story.

In this story, 10-year-old Abby, her seven-year-old Jonah and dog Prince (who joined them when leaving another fairy tale a few books ago), travel through their magical mirrorand fall into the Land of Bog and meet an important government official, when they are caught in a rainstorm and ask to stay at a special house.

This official is trying to find a princess to rule the land, one who cannot sleep with a pea under 100 mattresses. You can guess how the first half of the story goes.

In this book, Abby learns not to underestimate someone (especially if they seem to be quiet, for example) and also the importance of working as a team.

I loved the story of The Princess and the Pea when I was a kid. Whenever I had trouble sleeping at night, I thought about this story. This was a great adaptation.

Abby becomes the princess in this story. She arrives with her brother to the castle, and ends up passing the “princess test” when she can’t sleep on the mattresses that are on top of the pea. However, Abby has to go home eventually so she can’t be their princess forever. She creates her own princess test to find an intelligent, strong, and brave girl to be the princess in her place.

As this series has progressed, the stories become more complex with larger casts of characters. I really the way the characters have become more developed too. Abby learns life lessons in each book, such as teamwork, which was important to this story.

This was another great story in the Whatever After series! Y735 19

3.25 stars.

While an overall good girl, Abby suffers from moral amnesia a little too often, and we're forced to plod through her same old, same old mentality at the beginning of every book, even though we know that she learned all sorts of lessons in the previous story. Luckily, thanks to his Jack and the Beanstalk and ketchup obsessions, Jonah manages to keep things light and funny while also giving Abby a bunch of "responsible big sister" scenes, though at times he also feels the more mature, grounded sibling between them.

Lots of "what it takes to be a good leader" and girl power in this volume, and more actual details about Abby and Jonah being Jewish (which I only ever recall being mentioned in superficial ways in previous books, if at all.)alt-universes-worlds-dimensions doors-to-anywhere fairy-tales ...more Myah81

I thought that this was a really awesome book. It was a quick, easy read and I finished it in a day. I thought it was nice to take a quick break from the book I am currently reading, to read this. I loved how Abby was comparing everyone in the princess and the pea to the kids in her school. I was happy when Belly ended up as the princess of Bog. She was the perfect fit. I how Belly still included Tulip and Wendy in the castle though. They came to agreement with Prince Miche. But, their were times when I wanted to jump in the book myself and punch him in the face. He was such a jerk. I wish that he got knocked down from the throne but I wasn't expecting that to happen anyway. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!!!This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.Show full review McKenna55 1 follower

Abby traveled back into the magical mirrior. She figured out who is in the fairytale two peas in a pod. Two peas in a pod is a fairytale where they put a Pea under hundred mattresses. The princess does not sleep good that night. Abby slept there and did not have a good sleep. They were happy that they finally found the lost Princess. They didn’t though Abby was not the real princess. She said it would be fun to be a princess for three days. Three days in the mirror is one day back at home. Abby was determined to find a princess one that that wasn’t delicate but strong and loyal. She finally found a princess and she went back home. The author was trying to say you don’t need to be pretty and dedicated to be a princess. You need to be delicate ,loyal ,and strong Pickles95 9

I know I'm not the target audience for these books, and yeah they're more than a little predictable, but I still enjoy them. Abby is annoying, bossy, and a little self absorbed, but so is every ten year old. I guess it can be said that she learns a lesson at the end, but she never seems to remember it in later books. Frustrating, but to be expected from this sort of thing. Also, I never have any idea how a book is going to end, so the predictability was kind of a nice change.
I d the fairy tale characters in this one a lot more than some previous ones. Other than that, I don't really have anything to say about this one in particular. Rubi2,068 7

Cute retelling!

Once again, Abby kind of derails an original fairytale, accidentally taking a Princess's place.
She waits for the real princess but eventually decides to find a princess a different way. I think her idea was a great idea and I loved seeing all the girls participate and their different reactions.
Jonah, Abby, and Lawrence were rooting for 3 different girls. They all had something to bring to the table and a sudden invasion makes them see that.
Really fun story!
