I really wanted to this book. I have a soft spot for urban fantasy PI novels but this was not for me. Virginia is angry all of the time she has no other emotions. And I get it that she has had a rough life and her ex husband is a total dick but even when meeting new people she is confrontational. is it a pre-requisite for the main characters in these novels to have tragic trauma filled backstory. It gets a little old after a while. I'm not saying that they have to be happy go lucky all the time but maybe not having a chip on their shoulder would be a nice change of pace.

Now there were some good points to the story. The world felt fully fleshed out and I would to explore more of about this world with different characters. I d the side characters more than the main character. Astrid was a great character and so was the witch Anya. These two I would more of.

I would to thank the author Ryann Fletcher for giving me an eARC of Rhapsody in Flames.1 Doreen HOWARD227 9

A great read with excellent use of the English language. I'm looking forward to the second installment in the life of Virginia Vane.1 Violet1 review

I received a free review copy, but have since pre-ordered the kindle version as I enjoyed it so much.

Rhapsody in Flames is a noir urban fantasy novel by Ryann Fletcher. It follows an investigation by disgraced ex-cop, turned private investigator, Virginia Vane as she tries to solve the mysteries surrounding a missing person and uncovers wider issues in the city. There is barbed sarcasm in abundance, intrigue, crime, death, corruption, betrayal, mild spice, and stylish clothing. There are mythical beings, librarians (a librarian, but I d her, and she deserves a mention), lesbians, morally grey lesbians (the best kind), husky voiced women, and more. The characters have depth and nuance, and as such the story isn’t overly predictable and leaves you guessing, wanting to know what’s going to happen next, where it’s all leading, and how it will resolve.

The story is very satisfying and I can’t wait to reread it when the kindle release drops, and read the rest of the series as it comes out. 1 K.c. NortonAuthor 25 books21

Disclaimer: I received this book as an ARC, and this review is being left voluntarily. Thank you to the author.

I enjoyed the characters and the pulpy, noir feel of this novel. I'm not quite clear when it's supposed to take place, which I actually d. There are times when the world feels very modern, other times when it has a sort of 40s vibe, and elements in between. It is set in a fantasy world (not just a magical version of this one), but I feel comfortable calling this an urban fantasy, since so many aspects of the world are the same.

I did sometimes struggle with the pacing, since this book took its time getting to the point and there were a number of rather circular conversations, but I d our bitter, scrappy, smart-mouthed narrator. I suspect that many of the red herrings of this book will turn out to be setups for events that take place later in the series.

Overall, I think this is pretty much what you'd get if you threw a female Sherlock Holmes into Gotham, added some magic, and made him susceptible to femme fatales, so I'm for it. ;)1 Foxx Writer61 3

Virginia Vane is an angry, Petty, bitter PI with a history filled with trauma and betrayal. So when her jerk Ex husband strolls into town with the job she should have had if he hadn't tossed her under the bus fifteen years ago, she's a little extra prickly. too bad he needs her help solving a slew of murder cases. Getting along with him is difficult, getting along with a police department that threw her out after she tried to do the right thing is harder. Things get even more difficult when she becomes emotionally entangled in the case. Virginia has to work fast trying to make sense of a city that is rotating on it's access and just doesn't make sense anymore. uncovering secretes those in power would prefer remain hidden... and uncover a secrete about herself buried so deep she never saw it coming.

This book is filled with amazing characters you can empathize with, sympathize with, and emotionally connect to. I spent a good potion of the book wanting to punch one of the characters in the face. I spent the entire book wanting to give Virginia a hug. I was so invested in this book that at one point I honestly thought about throwing my kindle across the room I was so emotionally compromised. I didn't, because kindles are expensive, but I thought about it.

All in all, this is a book filled with amazing characters, a fully fleshed out world with some of the best worldbuilding I've ever seen and a story that left me breathless with emotions. I deeply hope that everyone will read this book because it's left me absolutely burning for more.favorites owned Marybeth106 4

Virginia Vane is a troubled woman. She is a private investigator and a disgraced former cop. She antagonizes everyone she encounters and alternately loves and hates the city she lives in. In this noir tale, she is searching for a murderer, trying to close cases of disappearing mythics while coping with wanting to do bodily harm to her ex who has shown up unexpectedly in charge of the police. I really enjoyed this book. It drew me into a dark story happening in a freezing winter and held me tight. The characters are all flawed in the best ways. The city of Verdance is corrupt and beautiful and makes a great setting. I'm looking forward to the next installments of Virginia's story. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Unfortunately this book wasn't for me and that is mostly due to the handling of the law enforcement. The fmc is a disgraced cop, turned PI who is very vocal about how law enforcement needs to be abolished, because it's rotten from the core and nothing can fix it. But the story itself sets out to show the reader that it's #notallcops and despite all her misgivings the fmc chooses to continue working as a consultant for the cops.

And unfortunately the fmc ends up starting a relationship with the Captain, making it a cop romance.

For queer & bipoc people it's #acab

I really d Seamus, Jolie and Anya and I would have loved to see more about them. The whole law enforcement angle unfortunately just isn't my vibe.

Disgraced former cop, now a disgruntled PI? Sign me up. The Rapture happened and the mythics were outed. Witches, seers, shifters, inferno witches and more.

Virginia Vane’s missing persons case just became a homicide and it’s connected to other cases. Vane is haunted by her past and hasn’t properly moved on. She’s now stuck working with her ex, his snippy captain, a sassy healing illusionist witch, her sparing werewolf buddy and a demon witch who’s on the run. Plus, she’s trying not to be tricked by her crazy siren ex.

All in all I very much enjoyed this read. It kept me intrigued and made me care about the characters. I’m intrigued to know who the mystery character is and am looking forward to the next installment.

Thank you to the author for the arc. Robert Foland239 3

We're all looking for redemption, or so it has been said. Perhaps, but some people simply fall upon it. Rhapsody in Flames is a story about such a situation. And many of the incredible cast of characters are in dire need of redemption. Ryann Fletcher spins an amazing tale around a PI named Virginia, demons, shifters, witches and more. Captivating and at times intense. A beautiful ride from beginning to end.

I received and advance copy for free and leave my voluntary review. Ashleigh Jordan124 4

AH-MAZE-ING.
This book is so well written, it takes the reader on an epic journey full of action, excitement, betrayal, seduction and loads of violence, if you're more delicately disposed this is not the book for you. The fact it's also paranormal is just the icing on the cake. Can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Another delight from Ryann

Absolutely loved the start of this new series. I love a good mystery, and a lady who fights. The nonbinary character just woven into the plot without comment or derision made my heart happy. A compelling cast of characters all around! Oudelli75

excellent

Interesting characters. At times I really didn’t some of them and at times I really d them. Imperfect all of us. It takes real skill to write these kind of characters. Looking forward to the next exhibit. Evan171 2
