"Life," Olivier repeated. "What is life?"
"A tragedy," said Christophe. "Hurrah!"

Indeed, hurrah and bravo! Part 2 of the three-part, ten-volume mega-novel "Jean- Christophe" was an absolute delight and deserves a standing ovation.

Our hero has now fled Germany as an exile, and we find him hiding out in Paris with no friends and no money. But Christophe is as resilient as he is a little crazy. Slowly, he makes a meager living and builds a meager social network of friends and enemies, but he is still an angry and fickle young man, full of anti-semitism and bitterness against the country where he is exiled.

But in Part 1, we were introduced to a minor character, a French governess to whom Christophe bestowed an act of kindness, which unfortunately through gossip and elitism led to unforseen consequences. Part 2 not only reintroduces this character, Antoinette, but devotes an entire volume entirely to her backstory, as she and her brother, Olivier, come to play an important role in the development of Christophe's character.

I won't say much more about the plot. But I will say that it was delightful to see Christophe soften and mature into a lovely character. But the real stars of this act are Antoinette and Olivier. Their story is absolutely heartbreaking, noble, and inspiring. Olivier's friendship with Christophe has homoerotic undertones, but remains purely platonic and is one of the sweetest portraits of pure love and friendship ever put to pen.

Now here is where some readers take issue with the novel. Olivier and Christophe move into a house populated by a whole cast of interesting characters, each a facet of the rich jewel that is the various personalities of Paris. At this point, Olivier magically ceases to be the timid and effete boy and takes on a more pedantic role, lecturing Christophe and the reader for page after page, covering subjects as diverse as freedom, art, music, philosophy, and politics. Some have expressed annoyance at the verbose ramblings of this novel and I can sympathize in this case. These lectures were supposed to represent how Olivier was a prime mover in the maturity of Jean-Christophe's thought and behavior, but really they are just a thinly disguised voice of the author, shoehorning his own blog into the novel rather than weaving these ideas into the action of the narrative. However, these sections do contain some of the most thoughtful sections of the book, and should not be skipped over for anything. Therein contains some timeless wisdom that I think many Americans and Europeans today absolutely must read.

There were many times where I was brought to tears by the sentiment and respect that this novel exuded, respect not only for the characters, but for the reader, and for every citizen of this rapidly changing world. You don't run across this level of tenderness very often in literature, and despite the often tragic nature of the story, my spirits were refreshed and uplifted.

And so, I eagerly move on to Part 3 of this Pulitzer-winner, and I'm looking forward to sharing my final thoughts with you on this fantastic literary experience.5 s Suraj Alva134 10

The reason the book has lost a star is that the author goes on an excessive long diatribe on the French and their nature which I couldn't have cared any less for. 1 Janet Valentine19

Read this MANY years ago, but never forgot it. Wonderful study of Parisian life and art at the turn of the century, includes a beautiful paean to music that every music lover should read ("Music, thou art my joy and my sorrow…" Must read this again, maybe next year… Christopher35
