Un escritor, con poco talento,solitario y depresivo. Ejerce el oficio por una necesidad económica y logra subsistir. Cansado de escribir historias que considera de baja calidad y no lo suficientemente oscuras para su gusto. Decide escribir algo genuino, y para eso se interioriza en el ocultismo. Durante sus investigaciones adquiere una copia del Vermis Mysteriis (Misterios Del Gusano. Para traducirlo va a recurrir a un místico de Nueva Inglaterra.

Una historia muy sencilla, algo predecible en algunos aspectos. Pero entretenida y "grotesca"
Tiene la peculiaridad, que el personaje "Mistico" es una recreación/ alter ego de Lovecraft. El cual le permitió usar esta recreación a Block a través de una carta bastante graciosa43 s Kirsten 1,655 281

I had not heard of this story until recently when I read about it in a Lovecraft-themed blog. Yet another story of a man deciding he has to know forbidden knowledge. (Honestly, why do people do this?)

This story was a wonderfully creepy tale of cosmic terror and reminds me a lot of my favorite episode of Space: 1999 ("Dragon's Domain"). Wonderful.audible10 s d219 188

The thundering tones cast an echo into infinity, beyond the farthermost star. They seemed to pass into primal and undimensioned gates, to seek out a listener there, and summon him to earth.

"The Shambler from the Stars" is awesome pulp fiction, written by a young Robert Bloch and dedicated to his writing idol, Lovecraft. Indeed Bloch includes a character in the story, "a mystic dreamer in New England," modeled after his idol, who deciphers a passage from a mystical book and summons a vampire from the stars.

Things end badly, as they often do when mere puny humans summon the unknown from beyond the stars. Bloch's writing is imitative of Lovecraft's, of course, but isn't imitation a sincere form of flattery? Awesome good stuff.

Robert Bloch mantuvo correspondencia con Lovecraft y en ella una vez le pidió permiso para añadirlo a su historia y matarlo. Lovecraft le devolvió la carta dándole su permiso. Y después se vengó con una continuación del relato donde mató al protagonista de El Vampiro Estelar que es un alter ego de Bloch.

En esta historia un joven aprendiz de estudiante que quiere escribir historias pulp para mantenerse, busca una experiencia que le haga escribir mejor terror hasta que finalmente encuentra un libro y pide ayuda a un estudioso para traducirlo. No os cuento el final... pero podéis imaginarlo.

Forma parte del horror cósmico iniciado H.P. Lovecraft y caracterizado por la deshumanización, los dioses primigenios y un estilo algo victoriano entre otras.

Another little corker from Mr Bloch, he seems to be the shining light in the inner circle of the Lovecraft gang (from my readings so far), and seems to write cosmic horror in a spectacular way that is second only to the master. This story pressed all my bibliophile buttons with its delicious descriptions of books and writing and then ended with bloody death and madness. I mean what is there not to love, not to yearn for, this is what makes cosmic horror the best genre in the world.

Esta historia es la representación ideal del famoso dicho "la curiosidad mató al gato".
Me ha parecido original la otra cara que le ha dado a la faceta del escritor porque cuando tienes ideas para crear una historia, todo es esfuerzo y entusiasmo, pero aquí lo ha convertido en algo oscuro y nada tentador.

A medida que escuchas o lees el relato, la inquietud aumenta a pasos agigantados, deseando saber qué tiene de especial ese libro y comenzando a predecir el final que podría llegar a ser para el protagonista con su insaciable curiosidad.

Me ha gustado bastante y muy interesante, siendo perfecto para seguir sumergiéndose en este género si eres nuevo o nueva como yo en el mundo del terror.lecturas-20202 s Ana María37

Llegue a este relato después de leer Los Misterios del gusano, cuento de Stephen King, donde hablan de un grimorio titulado del mismo modo. Me enteré que en ese relato King le rendía homenaje Robert Bloch, así que corrí a leerlo. Me gusto , aunque lo sentí demasiado corto. The man who invented psycho wrote this for HP Lovecraft, a writer wants to write occult fiction he finds a book and then goes to his friends house which ends in a terrifying encounter.
Pros
The build up and story was really good I enjoyed majority of this read and the whole background of this occult monster.
Cons

Robert Bloch is a writer I've heard a lot of good things about, he's mainly known for writing Psycho but he's also written a ton of other horror stories in his time. The Shamber from The Stars is one of them, paying respects to H.P Lovecraft's work who funnily enough would write a sequel of sorts to this exact story with 'The Haunter of The Dark'.

A writer who believes his work to be uncreative and rough due to his tales surrounding fictional beasts such as Vampires, Werewolves and so on wants to write a novel based on supposedly true events, and to do that he needs to procure a copy of De Vermis Mysteriis, also known as Mysteries of The Worm. Soon he manages to find a copy but in doing so, he might unleash a long-forgotten evil from the stars.

Robert Bloch has written a really creepy story with a really gruesome ending. It's a really short story where it only ends up being a brief read, but it's careful to not waste any time and every single word written on the page is important to the story at hand.

Overall: It's a really solid story with a horrifying ending. 8/10classic-horror1 André W. Prado84 6

Ótimo conto de horror cósmico de Robert Bloch, que ficaria conhecido mais tarde principalmente por Psicose. O enredo segue uma das premissas clássicas no gênero, o protagonista tem acesso a um livro maldito e então acaba tendo experiências que desafiam sua sanidade. Porém, o que mais me chamou atenção foram os paralelos que o autor faz com a própria história de vida do Lovecraft, abordando ainda as adversidades que escritores de "Weird fiction" enfrentam. Nesse caso o protagonista é um escritor do gênero, e está a procura de livros obscuros em busca de inspiração para suas obras, não por acaso ele tem um amigo que compartilha dos mesmos interesses, também é escritor e ainda por cima reside em Providence... El relato me ha gustado, demasiado corto, pero lleno de detalles con los que logra una atmósfera y un dinamismo que lo hace entretenido. Y luego está la historia detrás del relato que le da un plus, el juego que crea con H.P. Lovecraft introduciéndolo en el relato para acabar matándolo con saña, la respuesta de Lovecraft en otro relato, los "libros prohibidos" que menciona que luego se utilizan en otros relatos de los autores del Círculo de Lovecraft, esos guiños, homenajes y juegos resultan curiosos. A pretty standard "Guys fuck around with cosmic forces and pay the price" plot. If that was all it was it'd easily be 2 stars, HOWEVER, the author of this story was good friends with H.P. Lovecraft in real life and INCLUDED HIM IN THE STORY. It's an absolutely wild choice and one that I can't help but appreciate the audacity of.

Pleasant to read, the end of the story feels premature.
Once he‘s got De Vermis Mysteriis, the conclusion comes without further ado, which is regrettable as the expectation is left unsatisfied.
The conclusion is a downer.

Extremly simple little story, but short and fun. If nothing else to read how Lovecraft get eaten by a Thing from the Stars. horror Liz1,836 8

A young man is interested in becoming a writer of weird tales. He tries but to no success. This leads him to decide to get a more hands on approach with the forbidden knowledge (what could go wrong) that presumably these weird stories are based. In his quest for knowledge he becomes acquainted with a man who resembles H.P. Lovecraft (wink, wink), who definitely comes to a bad end. Something unspeakable is unleashed.
This lead to a response by Lovecraft which was The Haunter of the Dark. Both stories were written in 1935 for Weird Tales. It was Lovecraft's last known written work. In 1950, Bloch revisited this story line in The Shadow From the Steeple, which was published in Weird Tales.

Siempre tuve muchas ganas de leer esta obra y si os soy sincero me he llevado una decepcion. No me malinterpreteis, la obra es interesante, intrigante y se respira esa atmosfera pagana de las obras de Lovecraft. Pero la gran revelación final me parece llevada con mucha torpeza, lo cual me molesta especialmente porque la premisa de un amorfo ser invisible chupasangre me parece que tiene muchisimo potencial. Huele a cliché, a vagueza. Aún asi el resto de la obra cumple lo esperado y en todo momento esta bien narrada. Rob Moses30 1 follower

Un relato corto que evoca a los Mitos de Cthulhu, en donde Robert Bloch le hace un pequeño tributo a H.P. Lovecraft. "El vampiro Estelar", creo yo, es otro relato más para deleitarse sobre libros prohibidos, magia, brujería, hechicería y otros aspectos más que nos ofrece el horror cósmico.
