Werewolf archaeology * Pack loyalty * Lost history

In their time as alphas of the Roanoke pack, Silver and Andrew Dare changed dozens of lives, Were and human alike. This collection gathers together moments in those lives, past, present, and future, illuminating those who touched the alphas in turn.

Four short stories follow Were as they struggle with a decision to be beta, a fight on the trail of a Russian artifact, a first shift, and a future in which Were are imprisoned across the world.

Two novellas—one never before published—follow Faith, a human archaeologist. In "Mistaken Captives," she must fight to negotiate the Were world when she is accidentally kidnapped by the Russian pack. In "Contested History," Faith must then summon all her diplomacy and bravery to direct an excavation to uncover Were history while protecting the Were man she loves.

This is an anthology of short stories depicting some glimpses into the lives of certain Roanoke Pack members. Faith and Lawrence are the most prominent characters in this little collection as the first and the last stories are about them. Quite the interesting couple, who met in "Mistaken Identity" and now a new story to showcase more of them as a couple and as active pack leaders.

This is a long novella broken into two pieces with four short stories, taking place in the same universe, stuffed in the middle.

The novella was a not bad romance story with Laurence the abused former Roanoke Beta meeting his human girlfriend, the waitress/archeologist Faith. It didn’t sweep me off my feet though because I didn’t see why Faith falls for him aside from a hunky body and great sex. I Laurence, but why does Faith?

Some of the short stories were good. One, however, I didn’t because it was set 60 years in the future when a sort of Were apocalypse has occurred. It was depressing to think all my favorite characters were headed for a much more negative world. The author mentioned she had considered making this setting the start of a new series and I’m glad she didn’t. Emotionally, I need the arc of the series as a whole to continue to improve the Were world, not collapse it.

Anyhow if you’re a big fan, you’ll enjoy this book. It’s not for newbies though.fantasy-shifters own-it-not-read-yet Estel301

I thoroughly enjoyed this short story collection, even if I wish it had a Tatiana story in it to really tie up her arc. It's always fascinating to see human takes on the Were world, and what troubles each of the human characters who come in contact with that world (even if I wish that just once we could see a human *male* fall for a Were female and how that dynamic would play out--I love seeing the underdog women come through, and there are great parallels made between Faith and Susan, but I would love to also change up the format a bit). I will miss this world and this take on werewolves. It's closest I've ever seen to my own ideal werewolves, and knowing there won't be more in this world makes me sad. Scarolet Ellis7,444 48
