Sinopsis

Hard-luck gumshoe Eli Paxton is hired to find a missing cat--a very important cat, it turns out, because its collar is studded with diamonds worth a small fortune. What starts as a routine search of animal shelters soon becomes a perilous journey through a murky underworld. The woman who hired Paxton is the wealthy widow of a recently murdered financial adviser with an alias and mobster ties.

Eli finds the cat, but not the collar. Eventually, he's forced to unravel an intricate plot involving a Bolivian drug cartel. On top of all this, the temperamental widow is more likely to throw things at Eli than pay him for his services.

As he turns up one clue after another, leading him ever deeper into a treacherous maze, Eli hopes, first, to survive, and then to make enough money to afford a new transmission for his broken-down car.

This is Mike Resnick's third novel featuring his Cincinnati-based private-eye Eli Paxton. (The first one had a dog in the title, and the second one a colt; wonder what's next? The Case of the Gibbering Gerbil?) Eli is an old-fashioned disciple of Bogart; he doesn't use computers or have a cell phone and just watches old black-and-white films on tv. The mystery isn't too complicated but is a lot of fun, with liberal dashes of humor throughout. It's set in the present; current players of the Bengals are mentioned, but there were a few contemporary inaccuracies that were a little jarring. (For example, it's stated that Skyline chili is only located in Cincinnati and Florida, but they actually have franchises all around Ohio and Kentucky and in Indiana now, and Eli starts to light a cigarette in a restaurant before remembering it's prohibited in the city, but it's been illegal almost everywhere indoors in public for quite a while now.) Such minor quibbles aside, it's a fun, old-fashioned story. 2 s Jessica Perkins8

It was an easy, quick read. I really enjoyed the light hearted comic relief between the detective work. There's no major shocks or surprises, but it was still very enjoyable and entertaining. I'm going to check out his other books now. JB308 3

pretty good read, not sure I would seek out more in this series, but it was good. Chris Demer435

Eli Paxton is asked by a friend to come to a murder scene by a friend on the police force.A private investigator with few clients and prospects, he is hired on the spot by the wealthy widow to find her cat, which disappeared about the time her husband was murdered. H finds the cat and returns it, but as it turns out, it wasn't the cat she really wanted but its collar-which was still missing. The story continues with Paxton getting an unusual partner and finding out that the cat's collar is studded wit real diamonds.
other interesting characters are Paxton's dog, his landlady, the police and three Bolivian drug lords.

The big question is who took the diamonds? and why? (did the deceased owe money to the Bolivians?) And where are the diamonds now?

Paxton eventually hunts them down. But he is still not a wealthy man.

A fun, fast, vacation read. fiction-misc mystery Lance Wright208 21

This third in series mystery starts strong with an interesting premise, but then takes its time resolving the case of the missing cat. Though the story moves along briskly, not much happens between the opening and closing chapters. A nice, quick, generally enjoyable read, but not altogether memorable. When I read the description for this book, I thought it could be amusing. I was right; I was amused pretty much on every page. The mystery itself isn't too complicated. But the humor more than makes up for it. I will be on the lookout for the first two books in the series and awaiting the fourth.

I received this book as a GoodReads give-a-way. K. East1,141 13

Pretty entertaining mystery about a hard luck detective who solves a murder while looking for a cat with a diamond necklace. Unfortunately, there aren't but a couple of Eli Paxton mysteries and they are hard to find but worth the time. Mixing humor with mayhem makes for an enjoyable read. David Marshall774 12

This is a great old-style PI novel with plenty of interest and some gentle humour.

I love sad sacks. I can almost hear Bogie's voice, or James Garner for Paxton's character. Juli124

This mystery is very lighthearted and a quick read. I enjoyed it. The main character (a private detective) loves old movies and talking about sports. He was very likable to me. What I didn't realize when I was given this book was that it's a series. I may have to back-track and read the others. So, if you're in the mood for a quick mystery that's light, take a look at the "Eli Paxton" mysteries, written by Mike Resnick. Leslie1,117 5
