Honestly, I do not fully know what this is. It's not a romance, or even a tragedy in the strictest sense of either genre, and it is FOR SURE not a biography.

I'm disappointed, to say the least. I remember having read Japanese Rose just about ten years ago as one of the first books I have purchased for myself, it's still sitting proud on my shelf, and truth be told, I was flabbergasted by how UNLIKE what I was expecting this turned out to be.

Butterfly in the Wind was either translated to Hungarian incredibly poorly, or it was intentionally written in a tone that I can only describe as banal, much an old woman telling a story- not so much foreshadowing as spoiling the entire thing at each turn, with a strange sense of detachment from the characters you, the reader, are only half-remembering them yourself... never exactly recalling anything, dialogue or specific details, beyond a few impressions and tidbits that might stick in one's own memory elements of long faded memories. That choice of tone made it tiring and unsatisfying, and is, in my opinion, a glaring mistake of craftsmanship. Which is sad, considering that had this been the first book I read by this author, I would never have picked up another.

And what makes me even more sad is that the premise, the nigh-legend of one of the early victims of Western expansion, which would have been deserving of much more... just feels rushed. That ending I found more insulting than anything- really, I think I'm not spoiling anything when I say that the turn of Okichi's fate for the better(?) is restricted to the last, say, two pages in an epilogue, and consists essentially of a town seeing the bloated corpse of an old woman they drove to alcoholism and then suicide, and going "ouch, yyyyyikes, yeah, our bad, we fucked up, this one is on us you guys".

If you're looking for a good story on the tragedy of "Tojin" Okichi, this is not the one. I'm not entirely certain if there IS one you could read and actually be invested in, but as harsh a criticism that seems to be... this book is not even worth the couple lunch breaks and the one soak in the tub I took to read it cover to cover.cultural-eastern-asian general-or-literary-fiction owned-physical-copy ...more Joanna26 1 follower

Dimana kehidupan Okichi yang penuh ketentraman di desa Shimoda harus mengalami perubahan drastis, ketika kapal-kapal asing datang dan bermukim ke desa Okichi.
kecantikan Okichi yang tiada tara, begitu menjerumuskan ia ke tangan setan seorang asing yang penuh kuasa bernama Townsend Harris.
tentunya si Townsend Harris yang usianya 3 kali lipat dari Okichi menginginkan ia menjadi gundiknya.
Okichi yang sudah bertunangan dengan pemuda baik hati dan cakap bernama Tsurumatsu, yang sedang berbahagia untuk mempersiapkan pernikahan nya yang tinggal 2 bulan lagi, ketakutan mendengar ia akan dibawa paksa ke kediaman Townsend Harris.
Tsurumatsu pemuda cakap pemahat kayu, begitu tulus mencintai Okichi.
