I was instantly reminded why I so thoroughly enjoy Reagan Davis' books. Her writing and deft use of words draws me in every time. This time it was the very first sentence about driving through a pounding downpour in "a jittery silence". That immediately conveyed the atmosphere and hovering mood, with the "squeaky determination of the windshield wipers" making me flashback to a few drenching Florida downpours I remember from living there. I was instantly in the scene, albeit thankful that as much rain as my now home of Alaska gets, it never quite seems to come down as pounding as those dreaded Florida thunderstorms.

In any case, this is a quick, easy read, a flashback to the beginnings of Karla's days in Bellbrook. We meet her half sister, Max, who dreams of being a police officer, and Rob(yn) who is studying to be a doctor. Together, especially with Karla's knack of quickly discerning people's "tells" if they lie, they make a great team, even in this, their younger days. They are sent detouring around after the storm washes out some roads and encounter a dazed, injured woman who cannot even remember her own name. Then, they see the notice about an escaped serial killer. Uh, oh...

Roads and phones are out and this story takes place before even GPS in cars was common, let alone on cell phones. They are on their own. And, they use their collective strengths to slowly begin to put the pieces together and figure out who to trust and who not to trust. And, hey, there's even a dog stranded with them at the gas station/store. Bottom line, a fun, quick read that both fills in some blanks on Karla and the rest as well as keeps the reader engrossed and entertained. Or, maybe I should say "jittery"?9 s Wanda Siesicki467 3

This is the first book that I have read by this author and it definitely won't be my last. The three main characters in this book played well off each other. Karla Bell, her friend Rob (or Robyn is going to medical school to be a doctor) and her teen half sister Max (same father, different mothers and an aspiring police officer) are trying to drive home, in the middle of a torrential rainstorm, after closing up Rob's uncle camp for the winter. The problems that they encounter make for a very good mystery. It's an easy read and your going to want to read it straight through, which is just as well because it's unputdownable.

I offered a honest review for an ARC copy of this book.1 Chili Diane Evance259 2

Ice Girls Finish Last introduces you to the beginning of the relationship between Karla, Robyn (Rob) and Maxine (Max). For a quick getaway, the girls spent time at Rob’s uncle hunting cabin giving it a deep clean. A terrible storm hit the area and instead of staying until the storm passed, they decided wanted to return to Bellbrook. Along the way, they came across an accident and found a woman on the side of the road. Having amnesia, she didn’t know who she was, why she was there or anything. They couldn’t just let her stay there in the pouring rain and thus took her with them. As this mysterious woman starting remembering bits and pieces, she gave them directions to an out-of-the-way gas station. Not only did they not have cell service, the roads were in terrible shape and an injured woman, but also discover a woman (named the Ice Maker Killer) who had escaped from prison. Join the girls as they put the pieces of the puzzle together to identify the Ice Maker Killer, help the woman regain her memory, and live to talk about it.

What an excellent read! It had a great combination of murder, mystery, suspense and humor. II thought the mystery was engaging and kept me guessing on the whodunit. I highly recommend it to all mystery readers.

This prequel to the Bellbrook mystery series gives the reader a peek at the early relationships between Karla, Robyn (Rob), and Maxine (Max). I always enjoyed Reagan Davis' books and the short story Ice Girls Finish Last is no exception. If was a quick read but throughly enjoyable to learn the backstory of the sisters and Rob before we met them in the first book of this series. Full of humor and still a good mystery even though it's a short story.
Caught in a storm with no phones and road closures, the girls come upon an accident victim in need of medical aid. Fighting the elements, a total stranger they have taken responsibility for and news of an escaped convict make for a mystery only these three girls could stumble into and then try to solve.
Ice Girls Finish Last is a fast, fun read for all cozy mystery fans. I received an ARC from the author but my review is voluntary and entirely my opinion.1 Kay (Brigidsmomma) Compton752 26

Ice Girls Finish Last by Reagan Davis is an absolute gem that had me captivated from the very first page until the stunning conclusion! This book is a brilliant piece of mystery and intrigue that I simply couldn't put down.

The story begins with a thrilling and suspenseful scene as Karla, her sister, and best friend stumble upon a car wrecked amidst a stormy night. Without hesitation, they decide to help the amnesic accident victim and ensure her safety. Little do they know that their journey is about to take an unexpected turn, as they discover they're not alone on the treacherous roads. The presence of the notorious escaped serial killer, The Ice Maker, adds a spine-chilling layer of tension to the already gripping plot.

Davis masterfully weaves a tale filled with intrigue and mystery, keeping readers on the edge of their seats, eagerly turning each page to uncover the truth about the enigmatic passenger they found. The character development is impeccable, making Karla, her sister, and their friends feel old pals. I couldn't help but become emotionally invested in their lives, making the thrilling events even more intense.

The author's skillful storytelling is enhanced by the backdrop of small-town Canadian life, adding a delightful touch of charm and relatability. The infusion of humor throughout the narrative provides a welcome balance to the tension, making it an even more enjoyable read.

One aspect that truly stands out is the loveable inclusion of dogs and cats in the story. As an animal lover, I found myself smiling and melting at the heartwarming interactions between the characters and their furry companions.

"Ice Girls Finish Last" is the perfect blend of mystery, humor, and heart, making it an absolute must-read for fans of cozy mysteries.
