An excellent collection of short stories. Sex, love and (failed) relationships are the preferred themes of Quim Monzó, who, many Spanish writers, does indeed manage to counterbalance just the right measures of dark humour, irony and surrealism to craft some fabulous pieces of writing. His matter-of-factly style adjusts perfectly to his fun though depressive tales of common people. Don't expect to read some erotic scenes: sex and love are indeed present throughout most part of the book, but they rather convey a sad, melancholy feeling.

Most stories are quite short (119 pages comprise 30 stories), and it's not easy to put down "Why, Why, Why?". I really do recommend it.

This may be the best short story collection I've ever read.

There is something so appealing about Catalan writer Quim Monzó's stories. At first glance they seem somewhat fantastical, often consisting of a series of events that result in the characters' lives spiraling out of control. But upon closer inspection, they feel all too ly.

Many of these stories — "Instability" and "Trojan Euphoria" serving as the two clearest examples — seem predicated on the unfolding of utterly bizarre what-if scenarios, and yet despite the typically tragic way these stories unfold, they have a sort of Seinfeldian quality about them. The things that happen to these characters are so absurd, yet exist within the realm of possibility.

It's sort of Larry David got together with Chekov. Imagine how that'd turn out and you have something "Why, Why, Why?"

Towards the end, Monzó takes on popular fairy tales, but adds a twist.

What happens after the "Happily Ever After" you remember from childhood? In Cinderella's case, Prince Charming tires of her and she discovers he's been having an affair with BOTH stepsisters.

The Prince comes and gives Sleeping Beauty a kiss, and everything's as you remember, but then he looks further into the woods and sees another Sleeping Beauty stretched out, asleep. Has he chosen the right one?

If Monzó adorns these classic tales with modern day anxieties, then what he does with the stories set in the modern day is absolutely genius.

In "Married Life" a couple lie in their separate beds in a hotel room. Their relationship has gone awry, and he no longer knows what to do to get the spark back. And then they hear a couple having sex in the next room.

Many of these stories are just two or three pages in length, and yet each really packs a wallop.

In "Hand on Heart," a couple promises to be totally honest with each other and find that this leads to their relationship unraveling on that very night.

In "Why do the hands of a clock turn the way the hands of a clock do?" a man is approached by his wife's lover. The lover has tried to break things off with the wife, and can't. The wife is hopelessly in love with him. He begs the husband to please do something, to demand that his wife break off the relationship. The husband replies that if the man really wants his wife to tire of him, then he should love her back, he should do everything the husband has done for her, including marrying her.

In "Admiration," a woman who is obsessed with a certain novelist meets him after a book reading and the two begin a relationship. They move in together and have children. This leads the novelist to abandon writing novels to get a job where he's able to better provide for his family. The wife now finds her husband boring, and learns that her new favorite novelist is set to have a book reading in the city the following afternoon.

There are many more, all of them deliciously dark, all of them involving relationships of one kind or the other. They contain both the element of tragedy as well as the wicked humor of thwarted social convention.

No sé com valorar aquest llibre. L'estil de Monzó m'agrada, però el sexisme que hi ha a tots els contes em repel·leix.

Les descripcions dels personatges femenins es basen bàsicament en l’aspecte físic, mentre que els masculins gairebé sempre es presenten associats a una professió (i normalment una de reconeguda socialment). Als personatges femenins se’ls fa referència generalment com a “noia”, mentre que els masculins són “homes”. Fins i tot he trobat que certes escenes són situacions d'assetjament i abús sexual totalment normalitzats.

La falta d’un punt de vista més transversal ha fet que a vegades m’hagi costat seguir llegint, fet que, per cert, és una pena perquè sí que he gaudit l’estil de Monzó. M’agrada l’absurditat que apareix sovint en les històries i que serveix per a què els lectors reflexionem. També gaudeixo del dinamisme sobretot quan la trama es va embolicant i embolicant fins a arribar a un carreró sense sortida on et fa preguntar-te “com hem arribat fins aquí?”.

En conclusió, tinc sentiments contraposats. Per una banda, vull llegir més Monzó per veure si puc gaudir-lo sense tant sexisme pel mig, però, per altra, em fa molta mandra trobar-me de nou una lectura que em representi tan poc.

Quim Monzó is a Catalan author and this is a book of short stories that are awesome. It's been translated to all sorts of languages, but apparently english isn't one of them, so sucks for you if that's the only thing you speak. Començaré aquesta ressenya amb una mini història. Fa uns anys, quan cursava el batxillerat, me van fer llegir un llibre de Quim Monzó, si no ho record malament, diria que era "Mil Cretins" i no hi va haver manera, el vaig haver de deixar perquè me posava de mala llet llegir-lo, ja que moltes coses que si podien trobar xocaven directament amb les meves idees, potser no vaig entendre bé la ironia de l'autor o bé els meus ideals varen prevaldre.

Ara, uns anys després, he volgut tornar a provar-ho. Vaig llegir aquest llibre fa molts mesos ja, i he necessitat temps per encarar aquesta ressenya, ja que torn a tenir contradiccions. D'una banda, l'he pogut acabar i el vaig engolir, crec que he connectat una mica més amb la ironia i sàtira de l'autor. De l'altra, no he pogut estar-me'n de trobar-hi tòpics misògins i una clara heteronormativitat. Per tant, podríem dir que és un llibre poc políticament correcte (?, no ho sé. I’m calling BS on this one. Quim Monzo’s Why, Why, Why?, freshly translated by Peter Bush and published by Open Letter, has me asking the titular series of questions. Filled with short short stories often about the nature of romantic relationships, Monzo is going for the sort of defamiliarized depiction of a commonplace occurrence within a relationship that, in the right hands, can be revealing of a deeper insight or absurdity within the mechanics of human interaction. Often in these stories, however, it just feels banal; there’s no texture here, nothing of life, and even taking the situations as Monzo presents them, there’s a nasty misanthropy that definitely gravitates towards the misogynist that makes the book less enjoyable to read.
