Claudia and Aunt Daisy Mae definitely got to see a different side of Det. Sterling when he became the main person of interest in his ex-wife's murder. Claudia didn't believe for a minute he was capable of murder, but even Sterling realized they always look at the spouse or ex first. Add to that a creepy guy who appeared to be stalking Claudia now and she had a whole lotta trouble going on.

I started suspecting someone and was right about it. The showdown was a good one, but Claudia had been ready for it and got reinforcements in place first. I always those kinds of showdowns best! Claudia got an offer from the mayor to stick around for a while and take on a new project now the library rehab was done, so I'll be heading to the next book which I've already borrowed.2023-ku1 Emily Pennington18.7k 310

Well-Written and Suspenseful . . .

Claudia Madison, owner of a mobile bookshop called Word Travels, came to Greenwood Public Library which was in the process of needed renovation. Her cat Jasper made sure to spin his new, unwanted collar around and around so the bells would jingle and drive Claudia and Aunt Daisy Mae crazy until someone took it off of him. Unfortunately the workmen in the library had been continually and accidentally stepping on him, so the bells now warned them of his presence. The collar was definitely not going to be removed. Deliveries of computers and furniture had now started as well, so Claudia was kept busy. All of this had resulted from her tracking a murderer to the library a few months ago. He had set fire to it to try to escape. Now they had less than a month to finish the work before the library would reopen.

Some time ago, Claudia had been a suspect in a murder and put herself in the middle of things as she searched for the killer to clear her name. So things had been tense with Detective Roman Sterling. Their dis had mellowed a little by now. When Detective Sterling’s ex-wife Sarah shows up in town and is subsequently found murdered, the Detective is put on administrative leave and asks Claudia for her help in finding the real killer. As she investigates, she finds more in his past than she wanted to know. He had put her down as his emergency contact, so she is called to the hospital when a hit-and-run white van runs him down. And his hostility when she goes to talk to him is wise wearing her down. Did he know she had seen that white van earlier following her and hadn’t bothered to mention it to him? If she had, the killer might not have targeted him or caught him unaware. He doesn’t seem to trust her now. Can she trust him? Or will a mistake in judgment come back on her when the killer tracks her down?

This is the 4th book in the Word travels Mobile Bookshop and Ms Brooks never disappoints.

Detective Sterling and Claudia have never seen eye to eye. She was the main suspect in one of his cases from a previous book, and she constantly seemed to get embroiled in his murder investigations. In this installment The detectives ex wife is in town and it is obvious there is no love lost there when Claudia over hears a heated argument between the two. Claudia is working hard on the reopening of the local library, where her friend had been murdered in a previous book, but when Detective Sterling turns to her for help, she can't help but lend him a hand. The Detectives ex has been murdered and he is the primary suspect. Obviously he can't work that case so he has been put on administrative leave. Claudia discovers additional information about Detective Sterling's past during her research, leading her to wonder if he is connected to the murder. Claudia can't get rid of the feeling that she is being stalked and after being the victim of a hit-and-run, the detective becomes enraged and informs Claudia that he no longer needs her assistance. Luckily Claudia didn't listen to him and continues to find the real killer even if it leads to the detective. She puts a plan in action to catch a killer.

This installment takes the reader on an exhilarating journey to unravel the mystery, just the previous books in the series. Claudia is an amazing protagonist, and you can't help but adore her devoted kitty companion Jasper, who is by her side virtually all the time. Claudia and her aunt Daisy May are having some conflict as Aunt Daisy May is deliberating about a significant choice. We also get to see Noah, Claudia's long-distance boyfriend, It is always fun to see where their relationship is going . If you love a small town cozy mystery with great characters and a twist to an unexpected ending, you will enjoy this series.2024 cozies fiction Nikki1,291 11

This is the 4th book in a delightful cozy mystery series set in a small US town of Greenwood. Claudia and her Aunt Daisy Mae, along with Jasper the cat, travel round the USA in a van converted into a bookshop.

Unfortunately, in their travels, they seem to come across murders. Ever since their friend, Layla, the librarian in Greenwood was murdered in the first book, Claudia has become a bit of a sleuth, much to the local Detective's dismay. Detective Sterling and Claudia have butted heads since day 1, when he suspected her of killing Layla, but she finds information which he can't.

Claudia sees Detective Sterling arguing with a woman, his ex-wife, and when she is found dead, he is the main suspect. Put on administrative leave, he turns to Claudia for help to clear his name. Along the way they uncover secrets and face danger, can Claudia clear his name before one of them also ends up dead.

I really enjoy reading this cozy mystery series, all the books in this series are standalone mysteries, but the books are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and ongoing storyline..

I can't wait for the next book to see where it takes Claudia, Aunt Daisy Mae and Jasper, in their bookshop on wheels.

If you d this book, try one of Penny Brooke's other cozy mystery series; Seabreeze Bookshop and Garden Cove Library are equally as good as this one. This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.Show full review Daryl P Goodwin220 4

Fourth book sees other characters develop.

This fourth book in the series sees the development of several side characters and the detailed backstory of a previous antagonist. I have read all the three previous books and think you'll derive maximum pleasure and interest by doing the same. It may work as a standalone, but I think you'll miss out on the redemption of a previous antagonist and deepening of a love interest for our heroine. Jasper the cat is much mentioned, but another ally is somewhat sidelined for most of the tale.

There are suspects aplenty with diverse motives and our heroine is more wary of being caught alone with a murder suspect so credibility is increased. I think the plot twists were better presented and there were fewer co-incidences than previous books. The resolution described redemption and the epilogue set up the next in the series without a cliffhanger. I found it an entertaining, easy and quick read, but it was set in one location where the set-up is a travelling bookshop and the change of mind of an important character sounded trite, so it fell short of the full five stars.

Claudia never would've dreamed that she would still be in Greenwood especially when both she and her aunt prefer to be more nomadic.

But between the library opening in honor and memory of her dear friend Laila and a less of a friend/sometimes nemesis local detective needing her help to exonerate his name now, she finds herself caring more about this town and its people than expected.

The question is will she continue to stick around or is it time to finally move on. If so, they may want to rethink the name of this mystery series.

Murder out of Wedlock is the fourth book in the A Word Travels Mobile Bookshop Cozy Mystery series. I enjoy this series because the mobile bookshop idea is something that is very different, and you don’t see this idea readily used. This series keeps me focused and interested with its variety of characters ( I love Aunt Daisy Mae) and intriguing plots that keep the story flowing throughout the ending when the culprit is revealed. I enjoyed this storyline that put detective Sterling’s character on the hot seat. I look forward to see how the next school tour story develops.

Claudia is supposed to be a librarian but spends most of her time investigating mysteries along with her aunt. It is a fun short book full of action. I would recommend this book.
