Sinopsis

Set in Grahamstown, South Africa, during the 1990s at the height of political unrest and opposition to apartheid, this is the bittersweet story of two people whose lives intertwine with-out them knowing each other-one a heavy-drinking white man and the other the young daughter of a black activist.

Reuben Cohen van Tonder's battle with unresolved grief and his search for hidden peace and Vita Mbuli's innocent resolve to remove the bad luck that has troubled her family for generations climax together in a wondrous resolution of personal and national triumph.

In this captivating and heartfelt novel, Patricia Schonstein captures the harsh and brutal realities of South Africa's past with its raw and sore racism, interlacing them with enchantment, tenderness, forgiveness . . . and hope.

Reseñas Varias sobre este libro

This book is not my favourite of hers. I found Gershon very much another character from one of her other novels called A Time of Angels. The book seemed very muddled - until about half way through she was just explaining the lives of many characters and only towards the end can the reader really understand what they all have to do with one another.

One of the positive points is that it brings two major historical events into one novel so it is very informative and detailed as to how life was during the Holocaust and Apartheid.

" Anyway, as she's been shot, I can't treat her. We have orders not to treat blacks who get injured in riots."

A brilliant novel.1 Cindy23 1 follower

3 1/2 stars.

Always nice to read a book set in your own country - it has a sense of familiarity. A nice read, interesting characters, and good intertwining of stories. Isabelle21
