The DCI MacBain books, except throughout this one after chapter 2 he’s apparently a DI? I feel this one was so deeply disjointed with a random killing by a DS thrown in. There is much in this one that just doesn’t make any sense. Where are the uniformed officers, why is there only 3 people working in “the lab” the walking through crime scenes with no protection & just picking things up.
I particularly enjoyed the night away to Glasgow during a double murder investigation & not returning to Inverness until lunchtime the next day. There’s a lot of talk of the ocean…has Inverness moved?
I feel that there are some glaring errors in this collection that some basic research could have sorted…Inverness police force is not a thing and never was, the drinking 5 pints and then driving, by a serving police officer when the zero tolerance policy has been around long before they author wrote these books, although it’s hard to tell when they are set and the ages of the characters as at one point, his father disappeared 10 years ago when he was 18 and at uni, but now it’s 15 years after the event & he’s retired.
The whole storyline is also spectacularly far fetched, but I’d probably have enjoyed it more if was not for the basic errors. This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.Show full review louise page-bulloch25

I have read 4 books by this author. They have followed a similar format, a retired detective reminiscent of past cases. The stories are good with no gratuitous swearing or sex scenes which is refreshing as the story sticks to the point ( not that I’m prudish) The characters are well planned as are the cases solved or left hanging. My only criticism is that the cultural references would not have been relevant in the time frame alluded to “baby shark” stuck out in my mind and threw me from one of the authors tales. This is a minor nitpick on an otherwise enjoyable read of this book and the authors other titles.1 comment ALISON A O BRIEN128 2

Good story but

This is supposedly a story from 15+ years in the past, but it contains things not available or common in 2005 (smartphones, Tumblr, Bluetooth). Also, gender-neutral people and the plural “they” as a singular gender neutral pronoun was not used in everyday speech until more recently (“Em stood abruptly, hands dragging free of their friends’. Their fists trembled at their sides, and then they were stalking from the room...”) It was distracting. Beth308 29

Great Book!!

It is almost 4 a.m. I had to finish this book! DCI MacBain is now officially one of my favorites. The mysteries are fantastic, the characters realistic, and the ending perfect! I hope there are many more books in this series. I highly recommend this series. Maxine Burton33 1 follower
