Recuerdo que hace años leí la saga de El Médico, el libro que catapultó a la fama a Noah Gordon, y también recuerdo que cada uno de los libros que he ido leyendo después de este mismo autor me han dejado una sensación agridulce, son libros que se dejan leer pero de los que uno se esperaría algo más.

Con El diamante de Jerusalén vuelve a sucederme algo parecido, es cierto que es un libro anterior a El Médico (está escrito en el año 1979), es cierto que el libro se deja leer, pero no ha terminado de engancharme. Los personajes me parecen demasiado estereotipados y la historia es demasiado endeble, le faltan ingredientes para conseguir que el lector se meta en la historia.

Mención aparte es para la maquetación (pésima) del libro. La división de palabras la debe haber hecho algún primate en su tiempo de aburrimiento. Hace unos años, cuando empecé a leer en formato digital era habitual encontrar algunos libros con pequeños defectos, pero con una maquetación tan desastrosa como este creo que no lo he encontrado nunca, y ojo que no es un descarga pirata, sino la que pone la editorial a disposición de los clientes Prime de Amazon. 16 s Valeria Uribe19 2

Let me start with - I love Noah Gordon! I first read Mr Gordon's Cole series - The Physician, Shaman & Matters of Choice. Loved them all! The Jerusalem Diamond is an earlier book by Mr Gordon. It took me a little while to "get into" the book, but once I did, it came to life, as all of his books do. He not only develops characters who come to life, but he intertwines the stories with such interesting history, I find myself unable to put the book down! And un some other books, I never truly know how it's going to end up! I that! The main character, Harry Hopeman, is a full & complex character who I came to feel as if I knew. I enjoyed this book very much. Had it not been for the fact that the book took a little bit to get into, I would have given this 5 stars! Short english review: it wasn't a bad book but I think that it could be resolved in less pages. The most enjoyable aspect of this book was the historical chapters but it fall short compared to other Noah Gordon's books. I recommend reading The Physician first.

Pocas veces me pasa desear que un libro se termine, lamentablemente este fue uno de esos casos. Compré este libro porque El médico es uno de los mejores libros de novela histórica que he leído así que quería probar algún otro libro de este autor. El Diamante de Jerusalén fue escrito antes que El Médico por lo tanto era de esperar que no fuera tan bueno.

En este libro se cuenta la historia de Harry Hopeman un diamantista que desciende de un linaje de expertos en joyas. El Vaticano le encarga recuperar un diamante muy raro llamado "El diamante de la inquisición" el cual ha estado relacionado con su familia a lo largo de la historia y ahora está en manos de un misterioso egipcio llamado Yosuf Mehdi.

Creo que lo mejor de este libro es la cantidad de información que tiene, se nota que el autor realizó una gran investigación. Hay muchos datos tanto sobre el oficio de los diamantistas como de las tradiciones judías así como el pasado de dicho pueblo.
Otro aspecto que me gustó mucho fueron los capítulos de los antepasados de Hopeman, en ellos visitamos distintas épocas históricas: los orígenes de la inquisición, Italia durante el renacimiento y Alemania durante el ascenso de los Nazis al poder (y las atrocidades que empiezan a sufrir los judíos).

Lamentablemente la historia del presente no es tan interesante, empieza muy bien con cierto misterio pero hacia la mitad del libro estaba deseando que apareciera un capítulo histórico porque era muy aburrida. Los personajes tampoco ayudan mucho, Harry no me pareció un gran protagonista y le inventan una historia de amor que me pareció fuera de lugar. De hecho pasan la mayor parte del libro diciéndose lo mucho que se quieren (por no decir cog*endo capítulo por medio) en vez de buscar el famoso diamante.

Así que para terminar recomiendo que leas otros libros de este autor y dejes este para el final. El médico es un excelente libro del que escribiré una reseña en algún momento porque es uno de mis libros favoritos.historical mystery-thriller2 s Cat946 145

I read this book in Portuguese, and that was a negative point on the whole experience. I'm so used to read the original English versions, that this translated looked a bit weird.

As for the book itself, the best of it were historical bits about the Jews and their diamond trade. Aparte from that, I could find the book very interesting, as I think it is supposed to be. The main character is so shallow and uninteresting that made me want to put the book down. I went through the whole book just wishing to finish it, as to get rid of it. If it weren't for the historical parts, I think I wouldn't have read it to the very end.

Very disappointing - I had been expecting a historical mystery / adventure story based on the write-up. Instead it's a completely lame story about this smug idiot's half-baked affair. Honestly, if you are such a poor story teller that you have to rely on describing other people having sex for a plot point, please consider another profession. Or at least be upfront about what your book is about. If I wanted a lame but entertaining romance story I would have picked a Janetta Walters.

This book was kinda slow going but good. Harry Hopeman a diamond cutter by trade as was his father is given a chance to recover a stolen rare yellow diamond and restore it to the pope. This is the story of that journey including a trip to Israel and some harrowing events along the way. Still good writing, I'm super glad I've discovered Noah Gordon, but this one definitely suffered from time. Mr. Gordon does not write women well, so the love interest really suffers, and Harry is a spoiled man-child straight out of Mad Men.

Roman über einen Diamantenhändler, welcher in Jerusalem einen alten, heiss begehrten Diamanten wiederbeschaffen soll und sich dabei gleichzeitig mit seiner aktuellen Lebenssituation auseinanderzusetzt. Probably a 3.5. Very difficult to rate this book. No way, shape or form The Physician which is a marvelous work, The Jerusalem Diamond was a fast read but dealt with characters that were totally unappealing to me. The lead character, Harry Hupman did absolutely nothing that would make anyone really him and yet he allegedly gets a Yemeni woman to fall in love with him and tell us all how lovable he is. Not really. An egotist, and a real showoff to me, Harry is supposed to be on the trail of a diamond that was stolen from the Vatican from the Mitre of Gregory. That is what we are told, and then we have about 300 pages of nothing to do with that diamond! The best parts of the book are the historical fiction chapters that are all in italics. They are enjoyable reads and deal with the history of diamond cutting and with Harry's kin throughout the ages. In between the beginning and end we find Harry trying to shag as many women as possible, and get into a whole different story about an archeological dig with another less than appealing character.
So what did I about it? Well the historical fictions parts were good, the story was a fast read and did not bog down into too many useless details, and the story that is written about is well written. But a whole lot of this did not make a lot of sense to me. I have read The Physician and I guess I expected a bit better from the author. I have 4 other of his books downloaded and still intend to read all of them, he is a very talented writer, but for me the Jerusalem Diamond was an improbably story with unable characters made tolerable only because Noah Gordon is a fine writer.1 Laura36 6

Hacía mucho que no leía algo de este autor. He de confesar que, durante un tiempo, fue casi lo único que leí. No sé si ha sido porque tenía idealizada su obra (lo leí siendo bastante joven) o porque simplemente esta historia no está a la altura del resto de sus novelas, pero la verdad es que no me ha gustado. Me parece que la historia va a trompicones, forzando situaciones que no vienen al caso, para llegar a un final más que predecible. Además, la trama está excesivamente sesgada para mostrar a los judíos como único pueblo víctima de todas las barbaries históricas, incluida la que sucede durante nuestros días en Israel; dejando al resto de naciones y religiones como los malos de la película siempre. Creo que la historia ganaría bastante si se hablara del conflicto actual desde un tono más objetivo.
La historia trata de un diamantista al que se le encarga comprar un diamante que fue robado a la Iglesia, que previamente lo había confiscado a un judío durante la Inquisición. El mencionado diamante es de suma importancia por proceder del templo de Salomón. Durante todo el libro el diamantista empezará a cuestionarse si el hecho de crecer en Nueva York lo ha alejado de sus raíces judías o si no vivir en Israel lo convierte en menos judío que los residentes allí.
