Very close to a 5! Sometimes a bit confusing (probably me being tired) but overall a very enjoyable book. Definitely recommend and not sure why it isn’t more popular (shoutout Libby). 4 s Janalyn Prude3,318 93

When Zara finds her lover and best friend deceased in his bed she quickly calls their other best friends to come over. It seems he was up for a Pulitzer Prize in the awards are being given out in eight days and it’s something his friends think he deserves and doesn’t want him to miss out on. This is when they come up with a plan to prevent the world from knowing about his death because no one can win the award posthumously. They think covered every base except for the things they forgot and that is where the problem lies. From a speech on economic happiness to unforeseen guessed it seems the group of friends haven’t thought of absolutely everything and the things they forgot or kind of big deals. I found this book so funny from the inventor who wants to publish a book to the grandma who loves being a grandma but doesn’t want to be one to Zara who thinks she is owed a widows grievance even though no one knew she was even sleeping with the deceased to the friend who most has to impersonate him on the phone and the stairs because he doesn’t think he’s reached his potential there is so much to this book it is weekend at Bernie’s but smarter and funnier… Although I did love weekend at Bernie’s! I apologize for not putting their name down it took me several chapters before I could even know what character they were talking about because they are not names I hear every day and I apologize for that but having said that this is an awesome book and one I definitely recommend. 80 for Brady meets Weekend at Bernies in this riotous new release. As the saying almost goes, old friends die hard…

STOCKHOLM, a novel recently translated into English and out in the US via @harpervia, unfolds a darkly comedic plot as a close-knit group of seniors conspire to hide their deceased friend, Avishay, vying for the Nobel Prize for Economics. Avishay’s death is sudden, and there’s eight days until the Nobel committee announces their winner… So the quartet orchestrates an elaborate scheme to preserve Avishay's shot at glory. Our four heroes - each with their own dreams and motivations - intertwine as they navigate unexpected challenges, hidden resentments, and the whims of nature, all packed into a drama-filled week.

I was drawn into Stockholm’s unique, movie-esque premise, and had so much fun getting to know the four seniors who all become (maybe?) criminals overnight as they try and preserve the legacy of their friend. Author Noa Yedlin does a terrific job giving her quartet strong motivations - a quest for love, for belonging, for fame, and for success - and their madcap actions are well-serviced by a fast-moving plot, farcical side plots, and a charming and satisfying ending. The shift in narrative voices is fun and keeps you hooked. It’s a novel that makes you think as you laugh, offers a dark analysis of the ways we look back on our lives as we grow up, and is a wholehearted recommendation from me!

Loved it! Could not put it down! Thanks Noah! 1 Karli Sherwinter598 4

I know that it says this is a dark comedy, but I really disd this book. None of the characters were redeeming at all, and the plot is so far-fetched that I was compelled to read to the end, just to see how it would turn out, only to realize that the resolution is just as unrealistic. I have not found many Israeli authors that I connect with, and unfortunately, this book follows that trend. I was searching for some deeper, understanding about friendship or death, but neither seemed evident. It was unclear why this group of friends spend their time together, and how they could’ve possibly thought that their plan made any sense. The decomposition of the dead body just made matters worse. I felt I could smell the rotting corpse as the book went on. 1 yoav289 18

really good!! i feel i learned a little too much about the friends and i ended up kinda disliking the characters because of it but they were Real and Flawed1 Rachelle976 37 Shelved as 'didn-t-finish'

The premise of this one was so good, but I just couldn't get into it. It's very character driven, with lots of internal monologues and dialogue about nothing. I read 120 pages, and the events started to pick up, but not enough to keep me reading. Hopefully this'll be a better one for somebody else!

Stockholm by Noa Yedlin is a dark comedy about an older group of friends (late 60s, early 70s) attempting to keep secret the death of a friend. Ms. Yedlin is an award-winning Israeli writer.

Yehuda is an economist who is having a tough time publishing his book. The one way he is most ly to publish is if his childhood friend, Avishay wins the Nobel Prize and writes an introduction.
But Avishay died, and the Nobel committee doesn’t award the prize posthumously.

Yehuda’s friends have their own motives to participate in the ruse. Zohara is Avishay’s secret lover and is afraid she will be left out. Nili just loves the excitement, and Amos is an academic who wants to show he is not jealous of his colleagues’ success.

This is an original dark comedy, with a flowing narrative and very entertaining. The story is somewhat bombastic, but it’s a silly premise to tell a character-driven tale.

It’s hilarious that the MacGuffin in Stockholm by Noa Yedlin is the death of a good friend which has everything and has nothing to do with the plot. The story is about an aging generation, their fears, demands by children and grandchildren, retirement, technology, and the need to reinvent yourself at an advanced age.

A fun book, filled with humor that also tries to answer meaningful questions, while also shine a light on the characters’ insecurities. These older folks find themselves attempting to redefine what is a partnership, family, and society. Some of them value privacy, while others simply don’t care anymore.
All things everyone have to deal with, but not at that age.

I haven’t read many books about people who are older than 70. Each chapter, or section, is written from the point of view of a different person which makes the reading interesting. One of the characters I found to a lot in common with and it was easy to read, others I had nothing in common but enjoyed their sections, and others were just OK. But the fact that we don’t all the same thing is part of the narrative, and I think made the book better.2023 Molly134

I wanted to give 5 stars to counteract the absurdly low average (as of today) of 3.43 stars. But that's not how this rating system is supposed to work.

This was such an unusual book, and that alone might earn it a favorable rating - but only if the author "pulls it off." Luckily, Yedlin did that and much more.

Why valorize novelty? Because after a long life of reading fiction, I conclude that there are only so many stories. Therefore, a book that manages to be both original and well-done, manages to be "novel" without gimmicks and cuteness - that is to be celebrated.

That's not all. I have read original and well-done books that were not enjoyable. Or weren't that interesting. Or didn't *quite* ring true. (And I am excluding speculative fiction, where the rules of believability and originality are completely different.)

This work is startling in its believability, its truth about people, revealed by interior monologues and exterior dialogues.

This book is character-driven, so if that's not your interest, don't even start. There's just enough action to move the book forward (and what action!).

The events that happen aren't as believable as the characters are, but I found it possible to go with the flow. And accept that in a slightly different place from the world that I think I live in (and have read about in murder mysteries) -- an unattended death is treated more casually than I would expect. In addition to that challenge to verisimilitude, there are a few loose ends not tied up: Victor, Gidi, and Nathan.

These characters aren't always admirable, and the humor is dark, but they are so very real that I admire the writing for that reason alone. These characters think a lot of despicable things, but they don't perform any despicable actions. I love that distinction. And by the end, they have become wiser and ever-so-slightly better.

The translation is wonderful (I guess) and I also very much enjoyed her translator's note. Rachel573

When Avishay Sar-Shalom drops dead a week before the Nobel Prize is announced, his four best friends conspire to hide his death so that he will still be eligible to receive the award. I started this on my Kindle last year and gave up on it. At the advice of a friend, I tried it again on audio. With lots of dark humor, there were laugh out-loud and quiet chuckle moments plus lots of commentary on friendship, aging, death, marriage and parenthood. And while I was compelled to make it to the end to see what happened, I didn't love it. The best part of the book was the appended note from master translator Jessica Cohen who has translated every major Israeli writer including David Grossman, Amos Oz, Etgar Keret and more. Cohen asks how these characters, who are so Israeli, can exist in English? "If a person (and by extension , a character) is in part defined by the language she speaks, is she still the same person when she speaks an entirely different language? Rather than transposing a story that takes place in Tel Aviv to, say, London, New York, or Melbourne, I prefer to locate the characters in a setting that perhaps only in my imagination - a sort of bizarro world in which they are still in Israel, but they can now miraculously speak fluent, idiomatic English, as can everyone they interact with." I would be interested in watching the adaptation on television to see and hear how this characters speak in Hebrew. audiobooks israeli jewishfiction2023 ...more1 Wendy37 1 follower

I wanted to this book. I loved the idea of a story about what impossible lengths friends will go to for a friend to receive an award even after death.

I don’t mind the fact that it was very far fetched. I often enjoy a book just to be entertained by the author’s imagination. I love the invitation to go on a wild ride and I don’t care if something “couldn’t” happen “in real life”.

Sadly, I didn’t really any of the characters (even the dead one. Maybe especially the dead one?).
For a bunch of seniors who are all educated they sure didn’t come across as very intelligent. It’s not easy to cheer on a group of selfish people who all lie and are all soooo self serving.

I rarely ever not finish a book, so I did finish it. I was ready to celebrate when I was finished because my torture was over.

The writing in this book was very disjointed and confusing. At times, I suspected I must have skimmed too much and missed something. After wasting my time going back to try filling in a gap I just learned that nothing was missed in my reading, but in the writing. Perhaps there was a lot lost in the translation to English.

I could probably say more about what I didn’t , but I am uncomfortable with negative .
