Oggi vi parlerò di un libro a tema storico, ambientato nella Mercia dell’875, ovvero nell’Inghilterra dell’ovest dove la nostra protagonista, Elene, sta fuggendo dal suo destino che è quello di sposare una persona viscida, un verme e chi più ne ha più ne metta, interessato solo ai suoi possedimenti. Lei è l’ultima figlia dell’aldermanno Wulfgar di Baelle Heale e, come tale, deve seguire il volere del padre.

Ora, in una società come quella del quasi anno mille in cui le donne erano considerate meno di niente, Elene è colei che pensa fuori dagli schemi, vuole una vita sua, non desidera sposarsi ma, se proprio si deve arrivare al matrimonio, che sia almeno dettato dall’amore. Le sue sorelle si sono già sposate felicemente con due signori della guerra danesi e, quando lei incontra Hafual, un danese convertito che ama la terra di Mercia, dove ha trovato casa ed è ben visto da suo padre, il destino cambia.

Tra i due nasce qualcosa soprattutto dopo che, con uno stratagemma, lei, per sfuggire dal matrimonio combinato con Lord Pybba, il verme per intenderci, si sposa con il vichingone. In questo modo salva se stessa e le le sue terre ma… non ha fatto i conti con l’amore. Elene sente che i baci che si scambia con Hafual sono più di semplici sfioramenti di labbra con il vichingo, che nel frattempo si sente indegno. Lui infatti si porta dietro il senso di colpa di aver ucciso la sua precedente consorte, sebbene non sia così. Ora l’uomo ha il compito di crescere un figlio, Narfi, che adora la nuova sposa del padre e il suo cane Bugge.

Tra innumerevoli peripezie i due troveranno il giusto coronamento al loro amore.

Libro che si legge in poco tempo e che ti tiene compagnia in queste giornate di autunno. Elene è una protagonista fuori dalle righe che mi è piaciuta molto, insomma, basta con le solite donne da ‘’salvare’’ dal cattivo di turno perché hanno un po’ stancato”. Lei è la perfetta via di mezzo. E infine sì, ho amato anche il vichingone, uno che sopporta un fardello, anche se non sono tutte sue le colpe anzi, l’unica ad averle è la moglie defunta che era una pazza e per questo si precluse la felicità.

When I saw this month’s TBR prompt, I immediately went looking through my Harlequin Historicals. Harlequin is one of the few publishers who reliably explores the world outside of Regency society. I’d been toying with the idea of doing a Helen Kirkman reread for a while, so I definitely had Vikings on the mind when I made my pick. Michelle Styles is a Harlequin author I’ve enjoyed in the past, so I chose To Wed a Viking Warrior.

It turns out that this novel is 3rd in a trilogy. While the leads from the first two books are mentioned and make a few appearances, this story stands on its own quite well. The heroine, Elene, is the youngest of three daughters of a Mercian aeldorman. Her older sisters have married Vikings who settled on nearby lands, and Elene’s father wants her married to someone that will meet the approval of the Mercian king so as to cement the family’s hold on its lands. Because of the politics in play, Elene’s father is vulnerable to machinations of his steward, who leads him to a candidate that Elene loathes – and who has issues, as one will see in the book.

As the novel opens, Elene is fleeing. She is discovered by a neighboring lord, Hafual. Hafual is also a Viking, but has been in the employ of the Mercian king. After having been widowed, Hafual simply wants to raise his young son and frankly, otherwise be left alone. He takes pity on Elene, though, and when he hears of her plight, he promises rescue.

At a banquet that evening, Elene’s father does something even worse than anticipated. He doesn’t just attempt to force a betrothal on her; he insists she be married at once. Elene and Hafual convincingly claim that they have been trysting in secret and have pledged to one another. And so, surprise wedding! This is a partial review.
