It's not how many friends you can count; it's how many of those you can count on. ~ Anthony Liccione

“A Gentleman’s Honor” is a story about friendships: friendships that last; friendships that do not last.

Fitzwilliam Darcy is a man who has few real friends. One man he thought was a friend shows his colors in the opening chapter — it seems Charles Bingley is more concerned with re-homing an expensive sister than being Darcy’s friend.

The story begins at the Netherfield Ball. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet have their dance but do not part at the end. Instead, Elizabeth follows Darcy to a private spot to continue her inquiries about George Wickham. Darcy had received a note that Bingley wants to meet him in the library. He leaves. In the library, Caroline Bingley flings herself at Darcy and Charles Bingley walks in claiming Darcy must marry his sister. Elizabeth has witnessed the scene and refutes the Bingleys claims.

Quote from the book: “Miss Bingley, you should consider yourself fortunate. Had you been successful in this scheme, you would have been throwing yourself into the power of a man who now despises you.” He paused. “My family has a small estate in Scotland.” He allowed the words to work their power.

Darcy leaves Netherfield Park immediately and returns to London.

True friends stab you in the front ~ Oscar Wilde

Darcy was previously betrayed by “friends” wanting husbands for their sisters — several times when the sisters were pregnant. Thanks to George Wickham, another “friend” from childhood, his classmates believe Darcy prefers boys over girls and would welcome a ready-made heir.

With friends these, who needs enemies?

Now, safely back in London, Darcy’s coachman shocks him with the discovery of a body in the coach’s boot. Even more shocking: the body belongs to Elizabeth Bennet who is drugged and bruised but alive.

There is a disturbing scene involving Elizabeth’s kidnapping. No sexual assault but Elizabeth suffers physical injuries and is confined in a carriage where she must attempt a daring escape.

Why was she taken?
Who paid her abductors?
What caused her injuries?
How can Darcy and the Colonel keep her hidden?
And what was the purpose of the bed in the secret room?

It is easier to forgive an enemy than to forgive a friend. ~ William Blake

Henry Fitzwilliam, the Colonel’s older brother, has a major part to play in the story. Who is this man: a fop, a playboy, a clown? Then why does Elizabeth consider him dangerous?

Back to the broken Darcy/Bingley friendship:
What was Bingley’s role in Elizabeth’s kidnapping?
What will Jane think of Bingley now?

I made a big mistake reading this book. I was busy during the day and did not begin reading until evening. I was hooked from the first chapter and read until I finished at 3 in the morning. I am too old for this sort of thing!

The book ends with a short preview of the author’s next work featuring … drumroll please … Henry Fitzwilliam.

I can’t wait.

The author gave me an early copy of this book with no promise of a review.

5+ stars!

This book has EVERYTHING!
Great storytelling.
Great character development.
Great adventure/mystery.
Great romance.

So much to love! Darcy and Elizabeth continue their argument about Mr. Wickham off the dance floor at the Netherfield ball. Darcy has had enough and had been given an odd message to meet Bingley anyway, so he rudely leaves her standing to see what his friend wants. Intending to insist on a response to her questions, Elizabeth follows and witnesses a blatant attempt to compromise Darcy by Caroline Bingley AND her brother. Charles Bingley is not the affable, admirable character we're accustomed to. We learn this is only the latest in a string of Darcy's supposed "friends" who have disappointed him.

That's just the opening salvo in a book filled with thrills. Elizabeth is a plucky heroine, managing to escape from peril more than once over the course of the story. Recognizing his own desperate need to keep Elizabeth safe when her life is in danger wakes Darcy up early to his feelings about her. The two spend plenty of time together, producing many swoon-worthy moments.

The Fitzwilliam family gets in on the action too. Naturally, Colonel Fitzwilliam is Darcy's wing man, as always, but the colonel's older brother Henry, the viscount, is a fun scene-stealer. We also have their mother, who despairs of either of her sons marrying. She's delighted to take the future Mrs. Darcy in hand to manage her entry into society and quell any potential gossip.

The entail on Longbourn is a plot factor too, as Mr. Collins has died. With no other male relatives assumed to be in the bloodline, speculation has run rampant about who the legal heir is. Of course, Mrs. Bennet has her own opinion on the matter.

The story is surprisingly credible for such a melodramatic-sounding storyline. Ms. Rachel's excellent writing shows a deft touch, making it all seem plausible. I could be picky and point out that, considering all that she goes through, Elizabeth bounces back emotionally far too quickly, but A Gentleman's Honor: A Pride and Prejudice Variation simply follows the grand tradition of having a clever, courageous leading lady.

I loved every page. Bravo, Ms. Rachel! Content is clean.2021-great-books i-own-it jaff26 s J. W. Garrett1,606 111

“Give me honorable enemies rather than ambitious ones, and I’ll sleep more easily by night.” –George R. R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

Rating: MA: mature audience on all levels: OMG! discussions of an adult nature: Mild sex scene between a married couple, an attempted compromise, trigger warning[s]: physical abuse during a violent attack, drugging, kidnapping, diabolical revenge from a hidden villain, secrets, secrets, and more secrets. A duel that wasn’t a duel, betrayal, treachery… I can’t list them all. Just know, this would be too much for a young reader. It was nearly too much for me… but I LOVED IT! OMG!!! Angst Level: out the roof: Source: Gift from a friend: thanks, Sheila: Cover Envy: What a marvelous cover. Heavy sigh. This review probably contains *** SPOILERS *** Oh, heck, I’m sure it does… sorry.

I am so glad I read this. It will certainly go on my top 10 reading list for 2021. Heck, it will probably be on my top 5, if not number one. OMG! I know I keep saying that but 5-stars just isn’t enough. This story had everything… not to quote another review but it did. This was a marvelous Elizabeth who was NOT stupid, or obstinate. She had her own opinions on certain matters that affected her or Darcy and only demanded to be heard as she wanted to help and she was pretty smart. Another point in her favor, she was a scrapper. Man, I was impressed. Way to go Lizzy. Darcy was to die for… oh-my-gosh! When he and his servant opened that box… I broke my fan and hopefully, the brace can come off my wrist soon where I sprained it fanning myself. Whew! Help me!

“Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness.” –R. J. Palacio, Wonder

The scene between our couple during the Netherfield Park Ball was exactly what I’ve always wanted to see happen. Not satisfied with their dance, Elizabeth followed Mr. Darcy down the hall toward the library for answers. She had no idea just how quickly her life and his would change in a heartbeat. Elizabeth was magnificent.

“Et Tu, Brute?” –William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar

For Darcy, the Netherfield Ball was torture enough, but having to explain to Elizabeth his dealings with Wickham was excruciating. Little did he know that what he faced in the library would change the order of a friendship. Treachery, betrayal, and deceit would send him racing back to London before the ball ended. The scene in the library depicting an attempted compromise, the confrontation, and the threat of a sheep farm in Scotland will forever be a favorite of mine. Oh, how creative, I had to laugh out loud.

“There is no forgiveness. For women. A man may lose his honor and regain it again. But a woman cannot. She cannot.” –Cormac McCarthy, All the Pretty Horses

I can’t even describe anything because I don’t want to give a spoiler. This was an amazing story. It was well thought out, it played well [I’d love to see a movie of this] and when the villain[s] were revealed and their reason[s] for and behind their plan of destruction… I wanted to cry. It was horrible. What on earth set this debacle in motion? One comment, a pebble thoughtlessly thrown out at the top of a mountain… making its slow descent while picking up debris along the way. All too quickly, it grew into a monstrous avalanche. Lives would be forfeit, reputations lost, friendships destroyed, a social standing restored to one while another was lost forever. Bets were wagered and bets were lost. Through it all, our dear couple clung to each other and survived the onslaught.

What I d: Sir William Lucas had a part to play as the magistrate of Meryton and man, was he amazing. Darcy was certainly impressed. Lizzy knew her neighbor and put Darcy in his place when he started to disregard him. LOL! That was cute. Next, we have the Viscount, elder brother to Colonel Fitzwilliam. He was stupendous. I LOVED Henry. Keep your eyes on him. Elizabeth suspected there was more to the Viscount than met the eye and she was right. See? I told you she was smart. There was an excerpt of the next book following this one and it featured Henry. Oh, dear. There were so many hints in this first book about him. I have an idea what was going on but… I can’t say. I can’t wait to see this next book. I highly recommend this amazing story. Wow! I can’t help myself.2021 era-6-regency-1811-1820 jaff-pride-and-prejudice ...more26 s1 comment Sheila Majczan2,473 172

I have read all but one of this author's books now and I believe those that I read have all been 5 stars from me. Her stories are well written and edited.

In this story the "misunderstandings" that we read of in canon are very short lived. We begin at the Netherfield Ball and as Elizabeth confronts Darcy he only answers part of her remarks or questions as he is late for a meeting with Bingley in the library. Bingley has sent a note requesting Darcy meet him there. Elizabeth follows as she wants answers and is, fortunately, a witness to a planned compromise by Bingley and his sister. Elizabeth steps forward and states the facts as she witnessed them, thus making it easy for Darcy's to deny any compromise happened. Darcy leaves Netherfield immediately while Elizabeth goes back to the ballroom.

We read of Darcy's reflections concerning the many attempts by so-called "friends" and members of the ton to request that and/or to pressure Darcy to marry a sister, a relative, an acquaintance (many of whom are enceinte) as the story began. Sadly Darcy's circle of friends shrinks with each endeavor. Now he has lost another of those.

The next morning when Elizabeth walks out she is beset upon by men she does not recognize and although she fights she does not escape harm completely...but she does evade those men. When she shows up unconscious and severely injured in the boot of Darcy's coach (which has followed him with his trunks to London) Darcy is forced to take her in, hide her and treat her injuries.

So not only are ODC thrown together (The household is mostly kept in the dark as to her presence also.) but there is also the mystery as to who set up the attack and for what reason? Does it involve Darcy at all or is it just an attack on Elizabeth or was it random?

As the story progresses danger again presents itself. Darcy does draw the Colonel and then the Viscount into the mystery. There are, of course, a few trustworthy servants and hired men who must be relied upon.

ODC do reach an understanding earlier in this story than in most variations. Elizabeth is not one to just sit back and let events play out so Darcy has to adjust his mindset in providing protection for her (and himself).

I did manage to read this story in one day but it is long and other tell of staying up far into the night to reach the end so be warned. I highly recommend this story and others by this author.17 s Carole (in Canada)799 62

En garde!

Prepare yourself for a thrilling 'outside-the-box' variation!

"Perhaps all you lack is patience. First impressions are nearly always incomplete." (quote from the book)

I always wished Elizabeth had been more insistent with Mr. Darcy about Mr. Wickham during their dance at the Netherfield ball. It seems in this variation, I got my wish! Elizabeth definitely goes toe-to-toe with him in the opening chapter.

"You have so much, Darcy...You have a hard heart indeed if you will not share a little of it with your friends." (quote from the book)

What's that expression, 'keep your friends close but your enemies closer'? Well Darcy seems to be having a problem with the first part and his enemies are just a bit too close.

"Since the death of his father, Darcy somehow had been unable to find friends who had not eventually wanted something from him..." (quote from the book)

During the ball, Darcy receives a note from Bingley to meet him in the library. However, Elizabeth follows to insist he answer her questions. Not having the time, he walks away from Elizabeth without answering all her questions. Little does he know what is waiting for him. Fortunately for him, Elizabeth follows and witnesses the whole debacle and stands up for him. By doing so, Elizabeth becomes a target; she just doesn't know it yet. As Mr. Darcy rides off to London that very night, Elizabeth waves from the window, knowing she will never see him again. But this is only the beginning...

"Not for the first time, Darcy appreciated both her delicacy and her intelligence." (quote from the book)

The intensity of this story was fast-paced and suspenseful...I felt I should be calling for my salts...scandals and abductions test our fortitude! But two big questions loom...Who? Why? With the help of his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam and later 'Fitz's' brother Henry, Viscount Milton, they work to not only to protect Darcy, but especially Elizabeth!

"Love was a luxury she could no longer afford." (quote from the book)

There is such an atmosphere of impending doom over the characters. When was the bottom going to drop out? How was it going to happen? Plus there are other side plots that play a small but interesting role in this tale. I just know that I thoroughly loved the chemistry and dynamics between Elizabeth and Darcy, the loyalty of Colonel Fitzwilliam and Viscount Milton, and the unique role Mr. Bennet and Sir Lucas play in this novel. I don't think I have done this book justice!

I highly recommend this heart-stopping novel by the ever talented Melanie Rachel!

IF I COULD GIVE THIS 6 * I WOULD! Read in one afternoon sitting- could not put it down.

From the very first scene the reader is grabbed. One quick scene after another, seamlessly woven together, creating an exciting story that has you gripped until the very end. A different JAFF variation that just works!

With the story starting from ODC first face to face confrontation during the dance at the ball, we forego the initial dis and misunderstandings that builds slowly in P&P.
Starting off knowing that D is crushing on E and E is disgruntled at D, due to Wickham, brings us to the shocking opening scene, setting the stage for all the drama to come. Bingley fans beware-this is not a happy Bingley tale. With Darcy gone and the Bennet's warned regarding Wickham, it is a shock when Elizabeth ends up in trouble, serious trouble!

Darcy does go through a little hemming and hawing over his Darcy duty. Col F. side eying him the whole time. Elizabeth ends up seeing in a very short amount of time what a truly honorable, gentle and kind man D really is. Quick HEA for ODC. (my only pet peeve here- when the couple falls in love in 48 hrs, a hallmark movie.)

However-
So well written! Cleverly thought out story line and character useage! (Anyone else feel that Henry the Vicount reminds them of Win -Harlan Coben's character? without the insanity...)

Kudos and hats off to Melanie Rachel!!! Loved it *******2021 2022 2023 ...more16 s Ree1,157 66

With friends these...
“With friends these, who needs enemies?” —Joey Adams
‘An expression indicating that one's close associates prove more adversarial than one's opponents.’ —Wiktionary.org

Fitzwilliam Darcy is a man of honour. One of whom others seek to take advantage. So-called friends. Even his closest one.

“Since the death of his father, Darcy somehow had been unable to find friends who had not eventually wanted something from him—a handout, support for a political endeavor, an investment, or his agreement to marry a female relation.”

When Darcy is almost compromised at Netherfield, then rescued by Elizabeth, he returns to London. Elizabeth is innocently caught up in the treachery of someone seeking revenge upon Darcy. Escaping her captors, she is eventually reunited with him as he seeks to protect her reputation, her life, and his honour. His friends may betray him, but his family and servants are loyal.

From the shock of betrayal in the beginning pages, to the happy ending for our dear couple, Melanie Rachel entertains with a great story, endearing character portrayals, and wonderful dialogue. I especially loved the good senses of humour given to all of them. Also endearing is the love story itself. An excellent author, I recommend this and all Ms. Rachel’s works.

I look forward to reading more of Henry Fitzwilliam, Viscount Milton.

4.5 rounded up. This story throws our favorite literary couple into a grand adventure full of betrayal, danger, uncertainty and mystery. This book had my attention from the very beginning and kept me completely engaged as the story unfolded.

I loved it right from the beginning when Bingley behaved differently in the Netherfield library than I expected him to. I thought it was a great curve ball! The chain of events that followed kept me eager for more and I had a hard time putting it down. I thought D&E were presented pretty faithfully. I loved “Fitz” and by the end, Henry was quite dear to my heart! I really loved Jane’s strength of character and thought the path her story took was well deserved and very pleasing. I felt the Countess was a little too accepting and much more accommodating than could realistically be expected, but this wasn’t a primary focus of the book and it did help the story to go in the right direction, so I’ll go with it! I absolutely LOVED Sir William Lucas in this story and enjoyed seeing his amiability and good character put to good use! Although he still played a minor role, I loved the depth it added to his character and thought it was a clever and enjoyable twist! I felt the characters were well balanced and believable for the most part. All this really added to my enjoyment of the book.

As far as the plot itself, I thought it was really well done and unfolded at a great pace. I didn’t get bored and start skimming as I so often do because I was really on the edge of my seat almost the entire time. It also didn’t feel rushed or abrupt either. At times I felt it was long, but mostly because I was so anxious to get to the answers I was seeking and not because the story had fizzled out. I really don’t have anything significant to criticize. I didn’t feel it was too predictable and I felt there was a good balance between the suspense and mystery and the development of the love story. Darcy was truly a hero and Elizabeth was not overly obstinate and stubborn in her dis of him. I thought their romance had chemistry, was sweet and felt plausible given the circumstances they were in. Were the villain’s actions a bit over the top? Was the motive significant justification for such hatred? I don’t know, but I did appreciate that in the end, we were shown a more human side of him and he was not presented as pure evil, but a man who allowed disappointment, hurt, anger and what he thought was betrayal to overcome his judgment and his actions until he lost control of his life. Even though it was well deserved, he paid a very high price.

This book was such a pleasure to read and I highly recommend it!

Who can they trust?

Someone is messing with Darcy’s life. At first it seems he has has a run of bad luck. But then, in one 24 hour period the Bingley’s try to compromise Darcy and unknown people kidnap Lizzy.

On top of that ‘how can you tell if Darcy is insulting someone?’ Easy answer... if he is talking or interacting with them. Yep, it’s that Darcy. Sometimes you’ll be surprised someone hasn’t shot him, since he always is upsetting people.

Action, mysteries, new good characters, excellent writing and Lizzy uses a fork for a defensive weapon.

I really enjoyed every bit of the book. 10 s Melissa 387

This was an interesting story about Elizabeth’s life being in peril. She has already been beaten, drugged, and kidnapped when Darcy’s driver finds her body inside a trunk strapped to the back of Mr Darcy’s carriage. Who could’ve done such a thing, and how did she end up in his carriage? Is someone trying to frame him? Why would they attack and harm Miss Elizabeth? Luckily, a somewhat cranky Col Fitzwilliam is there to help. His older brother Henry is a surprising resource. He not only provides excellent wit and humor, but is unexpectedly adept at ferreting out information. These three amigos never make a move that isn’t strategic.

Elizabeth & Darcy overcome misconceptions and self apprehension very easily. They communicate. They realize they’re in love without any angst. In some ways, the romance aspect is a little anticlimactic, but it allows the focus to be on the danger and mystery. I don’t care for extreme angst, but I do appreciate a bit of romantic tension. Butterflies, a swoony declaration, or a bit of uncertainty are the things that really float my boat. I doubt I’ll ever reread it. Still, a very decent story.

I forgot to mention that Bingley is an absolute turd!

Loved it

I loved this book. The depictions of Darcy and Elizabeth were both believable and likable. The Fitzwilliam boys were positively delightful. Dialogue flowed. The adventure was believable— exciting without being over the top. Same for the mystery portion. It had enough clues that it was solvable for the reader and the characters were neither too dense to notice nor suspiciously clairvoyant. The mystery also knew its place—it was secondary to the characters and their love story. The motives made sense in the context of the time, as did the characters’ actions and reactions. Finally, the book is well-written and well-edited. I don’t remember a single case of poor word choice or grammatical error (huzzah!).

If you are looking for an unusual, well-written variation that will keep your attention and make you smile, I recommend this one.4 s Lynn191 9

I really d this story even though it starts with a shock and gets worse shortly thereafter. With an attempt at catching Darcy with his sister Caroline, Bingley becomes pretty nasty when it doesn't go off as planned (due to Lizzy intervening and coming to Darcy's defense.) Then Lizzy gets kidnapped, drugged and brutalized before she escapes (barely) with her life and near unconsciousness, stumbles in a panic to hide into the boot of a carriage. Darcy had fled Netherfield in a rage before the ball even finished, arrived in London very late and falls asleep, but not before shooting a message off to his Aunt Matlock to see her the next morning. The Colonel has to wake him up and chew him out for sleeping through his own request of an audience with his aunt. When he and Fitz return to Darcy House, he is met by his valet approaching him in an odd manner who informs Darcy his coachman wants to speak to him. The coachman (very trusted servant) is acting oddly, but wants Darcy to 'inspect' the trunk from the carriage back, which isn't his domain at all. But acting as weird as he is, Darcy reluctantly agrees to have the trunk brought into the house.

Well, we know who is going to be found in that trunk of course. The Colonel, 'Fitz', notices Darcy's reaction to the battered and probably dead girl in the trunk and further observes he is obviously besotted. They secreted Lizzy into the house without being seen by any servants, since the servants were mostly all off visiting relatives because Darcy wasn't expected back in town for a month or so.

Now here's where it becomes a little far-fetched IMHO. Anyone with any sense at all, including the reader, knows what should come next. But, wait! Every action anyone comes up with: Contacting family there in London, calling a doctor, taking her to Aunt Matlock, contacting Mr. Bennet to come to London for his daughter....every one is shot down by Darcy with seemingly logical reasons. Obviously someone is out to kill Elizabeth. Fitz steps up and helps his cousin the only way he knows how (besides badgering him about being in love that he should marry Lizzy) by sending his men far and wide searching for clues, investigating a list of possible men who have it in for Darcy and of course Wickham.

The plot, story arc, new and old characters...all are uniquely written. This is my first Melanie Rachel book and it won't be my last. There's violence, humor, confounding intrigue, romance, one or two subplots etc. I don't think I noticed any editing errors, if they were there I was reading so fast to find out what was going to happen next I missed them. Highly recommended. 2021-jaff-tbr-challange5 s abmom477 18

At the Netherfield ball Elizabeth witnesses a shocking scene which causes the immediate departure of Mr. Darcy. But that's not the end of the story. The next day Elizabeth finds herself in great danger. She escapes at the last moment but she soon discovers that Mr. Darcy is the only person who might help and protect her. This gives her the opportunity to see the gentleman in another light and acknowledge that she may very well him. Darcy on his part has never ceased loving Elizabeth. May they come to an understanding? And who caused all the trouble they find themselves in?

The story of the author Melanie Rachel was very well written and captivating. I was hardly able to put it down. I stories where Darcy and Elizabeth are forced to work together to solve a problem/mystery. They are such a great team together. This was the case here, they have their best ideas when working together. The mystery they have to solve was captivating and I only figured it out with Darcy and Elizabeth together.

I the way especially Darcy, Elizabeth and the Colonel were portrayed very much. You can feel the love with which they were written. They captured my heart ??.

There was one great villain in this story we have not seen before. He was really evil and I was glad when Elizabeth and Darcy were finally able to stop him/her. But you need not fear, Lady Catherine and Wickham have nevertheless their appearance and their say in the story
