Kate agreed to marry Luke at the end of the first book. Luke was a young man she had known all her life but they had scarcely married when he volunteered to join the fight in WWI.

Kate had been a maid in the house where she has lived with her mother Mabel, the head housekeeper and her sister Edith who was the cook but at the end of the first book, we learn their relationship was not quite what she had always believed.

Naomi, the daughter, the owner of of Woodicombe House has offered Kate a position as companion/maid and they move to London to live. Kate has always dreamed of living in London so was happy with the move. There, the two women become busy volunteering until a tragedy strikes Naomi and she decides to stay home. Kate is busy keeping everything going in the house while spending her mornings volunteering. Then Aubrey, brother-in-law to Naomi suddenly arrives home with a bandage on his hand. He's on medical leave while his injury improves. Before long, he becomes more than just a visitor, he becomes an individual who has more on his mind than just visiting.

Thoroughly enjoyed this second book and look forward to reading the third in the series. Amanda Bennett143
