Sinopsis

Have you ever wondered what it would br like to be the confidante of a serial killer? Herman Martin had the odd fate of living next to Jeffrey Dahmer in prison. Dahmer killed 17 people but, when he moved in next to Martin, he became a neighbor, not a killer. Step inside the mind and the soul of a man the world called a monster; a killer so famous he received more mail than any other inmate in the history of the world. Those letter writers were seeking what Herman became privy to. They wanted to know anything they could about how the killer machine was built. They wanted to know if he was remorseful and whethr he had tried to stop. They wanted to know his worries as a human being. Herman Martin became confidante to all these answers as he crawled to the edge of an open vent that connected their cells. Patricia Lorenz is the spiritual writer who helped him make senses of it all and, 15 years later, reveal the answers

As a psychology student and a fascination and interest in forensic psychology and criminology, I was hoping to gain further insight and a new angle into Jeffrey Dahmer's psyche. The narrator claims to have been Dahmer's neighbour in the cell directly next door when both were in solitary lockdown, yet I question how much and how deep these conversations were when you consider he had to climb and balance on a sink to talk to Dahmer through an air vent mostly after lights out. Furthermore, the narrator was only in this cell for just over a month, and consistently quoted bible passages to Dahmer and the reader which seems a little far fetched at times, and serves to pad out and stretch the book, and appear to preach too often.

However, the narrator reveals and elaborates Dahmer's motives for his sick, evil and brutal crimes, and his lack of remorse for his victims and their families. These contradict Dahmer's own public admission, eg Herman Martin stipulates that Dahmer was a racist and wanted to eradicate non-whites especially black people from America and that he enjoyed torturing and killing his victims, and talking about them (to the press, psychiatrists etc) because he could relive his fantasies in his head. Martin adds, Dahmer was unrepentent for his crimes and pretended to feel guilty for public appearances under the guidance of his lawyer and to get an easier and lenient time in prison. If all this is true that Dahmer is that cold blooded evil psychopathic serial killer, but would also be considered a mission-orientated/lust killer rather than a lust killer. It's hard to decide as Dahmer is dead, but it certainly offers a new side to this gruesome, sad story. Other than that, the book doesn't give anymore information than previous reports. crime psychological real-crime ...more2 s Lisa36 Read

This was quite possibly the WORST representation of an outlook on a serial killer. The simple fact that Herman Martin believed he could actually "save" Jeffrey Dahmer, and Dahmer would become a child of god shows how truly f'd up our religious society really is. What made me finally give up and want to throw this book in the garbage is when Martin is talking to Dahmer and Dahmer says that he has absolutely no remorse and he hopes the families know that he enjoyed killing each and every victim. Martin then decides that he believes that Dahmer doesn't really mean what he said. Done. Enough!2 s tiffany50 31

Probably the worst book on the portrayal of a serial killer I've ever read.
Little to no information on Dahmer.
The majority of the book is spent preaching or discussing the author's petty crimes.

Also, I find some of the things Martin claims Jeffrey said to him a little unbelievable and extremely out of character.

I struggled to even finish this. ebooks read-2019 true-crime2 s François Charih16

Did not finish. Claims appear to be very unreliable and inconsistent with what is known about Dahmer…1 Alice Weston8

I couldn't really get into this book...

It didn't offer much of an insight into Dahmer than I had hoped. Brian2

Some interesting bits, a good portion of the book were verbatim passages from the bible. Moni1 reviewWant to read

This was a different one. The guy who talked to Jeff Dahmer through the air vent for months wrote about his experiences trying to save Jeff's soul. At times there are almost more Bible verses than human interaction in here, but it was an interesting glimpse into Dahmer's life in the big house. It's also a real-life example of unreliable narration -- the author appears unaware that the guy in the next cell was a steady churchgoer and Bible student all his life, for one thing, and he clean misses Dahmer's suicidality and attempts to alienate the author any way he can. true-crime Jessica Leyer71 1 follower

This was an ok read. It was more about Herman's life and struggle versus what Jeffrey Dahmer actually said to him or confided in him about. Jeffrey was pretty open about his crimes... he was proud of what he did. I could have gone without all the Bible quotes. I would have d to see a copy of one of Jeffrey's letters to Herman. SERIAL KILLER’S SOUL—Herman Lee Martin 2010
Herman served time in the cell next to Jeffrey Dahmer. Once you get past Herman’s deep religious convictions, this book is an interesting account of Jeffrey Dahmer’s time at Columbia Correctional Institution. Jaime46 2
