When a storm wrecks their flying carriage, Sage and her friends seek shelter in an abandoned and creepy mansion. Meeting a resident ghost, they learn they are now cursed to be trapped there forever. With menacing creatures outside and malicious spirits inside, can they evade the treacherous traps and unravel the mystery before time runs out?

Plenty of thrills and chills mixed with a healthy dose of humor in this twisty mystery from Mara Webb. Though book 9 in the series, newcomers are definitely able to enjoy this adventure. The personalities of the characters are nicely crafted and you feel as if you know them well by the end. The mystery has some neat twists that you may not see coming. A fun and fast clean read with a good message on the power of friendship. I will definitely be looking into more of this series.

This book was fun. I enjoyed the characters, and felt that even though I had not read in the series before, I wasn't missing any essential information to be able to follow what was happening. I was a little confused about why the characters didn't have cell phones, and why the cat Callie could cast spells, but I'm sure that information was provided in earlier books in the series. I enjoyed it for what it was but it wasn't what I was expecting. I feel it could have been a novella or side story rather than something in the main series, as there was no murder mystery to solve, and it seemed a one-off type of story. The characters were not in their usual setting/town, and that's one of the mainstays of a cozy mystery series for me.

There were a lot of similarities in the story to other things I've seen or read before. For example, I pictured the Backstreet Boys video of Everybody - Backstreet's Back when the group came up to the mysterious manor. As they were adventuring through the different rooms of the manor and avoiding traps, I was picturing the Sims 3 World Adventures tomb of Jean Necteaux's mansion. The third test that Lucille gave Sage reminded me of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Normal Again." I enjoyed these a lot, as they are very familiar tropes. The whole book read a very fast-paced, action-adventure video game, with the characters encountering progressively more difficult "enemies" until a final "boss battle."

Overall, this was a fun romp of a book, but not my favorite type of magical mystery story. I will ly try something else from this author in the same series as the characters were engaging and I am interested in the world-building.
