This was such a fun read! The synopsis is clear that the book is about the disappearance of a professional mermaid, but I didn’t really know what that would entail. The concept itself and the way in which it was developed was very creative and entertaining. I was also thoroughly captivated by the mystery and I didn’t want to set the book down. My only critique is that I would have d a bit more backstory about Eva in order to fully appreciate the denouement and I think that Rachel’s character could have used a bit more dimension.

I had no idea that this book was part of a series when I started reading it. But the author did a really good job of catching up the reader from the beginning so I don’t think that you need to have read the other books to enjoy this one.

Thank you to Oliver Heber Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advance reader’s copy in exchange for my honest review.1 Melanie Stewart249 6

It has been a beat since our last Brown and deLuca book. Thankfully the series is back. This book also feels perhaps a spinoff is in the works for Zig podcast. While a spinoff would be welcome, I want more Broen and deLuca books too.
The book felt a bit of a reunion with old friends. We remember the story of how Rachel got her sight back and how she fell in love with Mason and how the two families became one. I had to laugh a little that Rahcel and Mason are Aunt and Uncle to Misty and Jere yet they are dating. That brought back something personal in my life where my aunt was my bf’s aunt. I’m sure I’m not the only person who can relate and that ability to relate made me a little more invested in this story.
The mystery was really engaging. I had my suspicions as I read as to who the killer was, but nothing is as it seems. The story flips between Misty who became invested in the missing mermaid and her aunt who invested in her niece’s safety. We also get a little bit of a clue that perhaps Misty and Cristy share more with their aunt than we knew. Plus, they are twins, so we get the whole trading places thing and twins just knowing about the other. Both halves of the story were well written and kept you turning pages. Again, getting back to characters we loved in past books was a lot of fun.
We truly got an HEA. Even Mrytle got a little more happiness and who doesn’t love good things happening to the dog. I very much hope Maggie Shayne keeps this story rolling.
