Great first book, great start to a series
This was a very interesting read. Even though it was a bigger book, it didn't feel that way. There was plenty of action and adventures that kept this reader fully present and wanting to know more.
That being said, some of the intricacies of the world and interactions between characters were telling that this was a first book for this writer. Despite that, I'm definitely in for the full ember sea trilogy.1 Brian Heckman109 4
Really enjoyable read. I love fantasy but often just get bored of dragon books, this one held my attention and made it fresh and fun. Loved the seafaring, pirate setting. Loved the use of tattoos for a magic system. Strong action and characters. Good villain monologue at the end ties it all together. Cant wait to see where this series goes.1 Larissa38
Serpents End has everything I love in a fantasy: unique, vivid world building and a complex, intriguing magic system. A crew of close-knit, swashbuckling and humorous characters. Political intrigue and rivalries. And an action packed plot filled with twists and turns. Im truly so impressed that this is a debut fantasy novel and I cant wait to read the rest in the series. 1 Dan Hemme15
Really enjoyed this book. The author really does a fantastic job of creating an entire world within the context of a single novel -- I got the distinct impression by the end of the book that an already very rich world was only just beginning to be uncovered. Elliott' storyline was really enjoyable, and I'm already invested in how he grows with his Gilt over the rest of the trilogy, as with all of the other characters, who have their own layers - Lucien with his rage and singular perspective, Elliott with his empathy, powers, and emergent responsibility, and LeCirq as what sounds a fantastic villain. Plus, I a novel set on a boat, on a body of water. What can I say. :)
Really encourage anyone who sees this review to give it a read! Heather2
In his debut book, Lorn Hillaker was able to create a vibrant world filled with interesting characters. I particularly enjoyed Reshouxs posh humor and Vondas fierceness, and Im looking forward to seeing how Elliot grows as he learns more about himself and his powers. The unique magic system involves infusing special tattoos with gold and is one of the best parts of Serpents End - that and the whole pirate vs dragon concept! The entire last sequence of the book was thoroughly enjoyable, with an unexpected twist that really opens up the possibilities for the rest of the series. Im looking forward to book 2! I loved this book. I was really happy with how the characters' personalities were fleshed out and how they interacted with each other. Then there is the magic, the interesting worlds within worlds and unexpected twists and turns. There is an interesting mix of humor in the midst of dragon fire, which adds to the quality of the story. If you enjoy the fantasy genre, you will enjoy this book. Looking forward to book 2 and 3!1 Jason Phillips1 review
A Dragons Hoard
You can credit Will with my initial purchase, but this review exists only because you wrote an excellent book.
Pirares and Dragons make a lot of sense in hind sight. They both love gold. Taking it a step further and making that gold the mana for your magic system? Inspiring.
Eagerly awaiting the next one, and heres hoping you bring back more of that sick Lightning Dragoon power. Andrew Fredrickson3
Fun and original
I'll be honest, I'm not a huge fan of dragons in fantasy, I usually avoid books with them, but I sure pirates and new magic systems. I gave this book a shot and I'm super glad I did, I ended up loving it, it was difficult to put down. I'm ready for book two. Tyler7
