This stellar debut novel is a treat to read, written in a fresh and fun voice. The story has a unique setting of a Canadian television production company populated with a swirling cast of diverse characters of loyal and supportive friends, family and co-workers. Junior, the strong, outspoken Afro-Latina heroine rarely plays by the rules and is always on the side of the underdog—despite her own privileged background. On the surface, producer Davis Fletcher’s too good-looking for his own good—especially for someone who’s so pedantic and careful about never rocking the boat. He has his reasons for that, but after he makes a poor first impression, Junior dismisses him as not worth her time.

Fletcher’s smitten with her from day one but keeps his feelings under wraps, never believing he’d have a chance with someone so vivacious. As an indigenous person, he knows he must keep his focus squarely on his work and ambitions in order to achieve his goals—until Junior is asked to work with him on a project. His attraction for her only grows stronger, and she begins to recognize his better qualities. After a hot scene where feelings are revealed, Junior wants to keep their relationship a secret, but Fletcher wants to share a bigger part of her life. Between work and family issues, it becomes clear that opposites may attract, but their strong personalities, lifestyle and background differences prevent them from agreeing on anything outside the bedroom. But after much heartache, soul searching, and encouragement from their friends and family, they recognize how much better they are together than they are apart. A totally satisfying and rewarding read!

I was provided with an ARC of the book. This review is my true and honest opinion. Jessica TerryAuthor 28 books35

Overall entertaining

This ultimately turned out to be a really cool read. There were several funny moments, which I always appreciate. And I love a tight loyal friend circle. There were several nuances that I didn't fully appreciate until later in the book, and I'm glad I stuck with it to get to that point.

That being said, it took a good ten chapters or so before the confusion started to clear. I say that because there were so many characters and so much going on - a lot of which I couldn't understand what had to do with anything - that I was wondering where we were going and when we were getting there. Some scenes seemed to go on several pages longer than necessary, in my opinion ( the initial wingman stuff at the club/bar), or there were drawn-out explanations for things fairly often that stalled the flow.

But then things finally picked up for Junior and Davis and I started really getting into it. I initially didn't feel any chemistry between them at all but I enjoyed their progression, especially once Davis started being a little more assertive. Junior irked me plenty but I d her overall, and seeing her slowly break down her walls for Davis was endearing. The writing was detailed and even if I felt the dialogue was a teeny bit laborious at times and I had to rely best I could on context for anything said in another language, I appreciated the clear distinction between characters and the levels to Junior and Davis.

I was kinda drifting at first but ended up totally engaged in this, so this was overall a great debut from this author, in my opinion. Keshe ChowAuthor 2 books162

I was lucky to read an early copy of this book, and found it to be so much fun. With a fresh setting and dazzlingly three dimensional characters that leap off the page, The Insufferable Mr. Fletcher is at turns funny, poignant, tender, and steamy. It grapples with some big topics including race, gender, and class privilege, but is still a highly entertaining read. A fabulous debut!2 s Philippa LodgeAuthor 18 books237

I read this book a while ago as a charity auction copy edit and have been cheering for Junior ever since. It takes a while to get going and to start figuring out the 200 characters, but it's worth it! Ellen1 review
