Elysia is an angel who, alongside her best friend Marielle, is a healer for the Department of Celestial Care in Heaven. However, on the night of the Convergence, the night when the sky is lit up with auroras and Heavens stores of Spark are renewed, Marielle is nowhere to be seen, so Elysia spends the time watching the skies with a stranger named Alirion. After it is discovered that Marielle is not missing, that she has been sent with a host of other healers to help a town suffering from a mysterious illness that is stripping angels of their spark and killing them, Elysia and Alirion discover that this is not the first time this has happened, and now they must find their way through the tangled web of lies and cover-ups in order to find the truth... but as a wise old angel tells them, "When the Angelic Council decides it's time to forget things, they are forgotten"... this cover up is coming straight from the top, and now they are up to something. It is up to Elysia and Alirion to find out the truth and stop it before it is too late.
I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this book and found it to be a highly entertaining read with fantastic worldbuilding, it grabs you from the beginning with a mission to save her friend, and then really sinks its claws into you when the mission turns into having to save their entire existence. At under 300 pages this is a really good, quick, easy read that has great pacing and keeps you intrigued throughout the whole book. This was my first book by this author and I have to say I am a fan. His ability to create a world with such detail really draws you in. The two main characters are very interesting. I immediately loved Elysia. Alirion was a little harder to at first but that changes throughout the book. There was a decent amount of action and a good amount of adventure. Looking forward to reading the next book and seeing how the story continues. 1 Liz259 14

I found The Withering Dawn by Kevin Hess to be a highly enjoyable read. This story about two angels who are investigating a plague was very interesting and unique. While there isn’t a ton of action in this first book, you can tell it’s setting up the baseline for plenty of action to come.

The world building the author did of Heaven was nicely done, but I would have loved to have read more about how the author envisioned Heaven. You can never have too many details about such a legendary place.

Overall, this book was a great read, and I am looking forward to continuing with the series to see how it plays out.

I was immediately pulled in by chapter 1, and that's very rare! Hess creates such vivid and epic world building with great description. There is also a unique premise. Heaven is being plagued with a sickness. However, Alirion and Elysia believe they know the origin of it, and the Angelic Council is keeping a secret.1 Samantha Jones6

The Withering Dawn by Kevin Hess has a very entertaining plot. The book has multiple buildable characters that enrich the story. The main characters have a mysterious and interesting development throughout the entire novel. The dynamic possibilities that cause “the withering” an illness outbreak in heaven leads into two more novels from this series. This was such a good read. It actually kind of took me by surprise how much I really enjoyed it. I love the lore and the new places and characters I got to read about.
