Thought it might be just a run of the mill Alpha Male ™? dragon shifter story BUT I FORGOT KATHRYN MOON DONT PLAY THOSE GAMES. Subverted expectations at every turn. A little bit mystery, a lotta bit simping alpha, a lotta bit "my woman is gonna change the world."

Can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Honestly?? I’m obsessed. I'm not usually a dragon-shifter person, but wow did this Regency-adjacent, filthy-yet-sweet variant really hit the spot.

Concept: ???
Plot/Pacing: ?????
Romance: ?????

Calling all fans of dragons, Regency romances, alpha/omega, and soft yet filthy stories...

The Alpha of Bleake Isle is your kind of good time.

As the one Alpha of the Bleake Isle dragonkin, it's Lord Ronson Cadogan's duty to choose an eligible omega once per decade from society as his official rut partner. The fact that Ronson hasn't chosen one in decades is... not going well. The stuffy society Beta men of the island aren't going to let him get away with this odd behavior without a challenge for much longer, and Ronson knows it. So this time, he's made it clear that he intends to pick an omega for the very first time.

Mairwen Posy knows precisely who the Alpha of Bleake Isle will choose, and it certainly isn't her. In fact, it's so predictable it's almost boring. Mairwen, called "Mouse" by society, is a wallflower and observer, cursed to the sidelines due to her lack of perfume and less-than-ideal body shape.

So it shocks everyone when Ronson chooses...Mairwen. (The two of them have their reasons for this choice.)

Now officially "together" with no warning and no preparation, Ronson and Mairwen discover that things on Bleake Isle aren't quite as they should be... and it's up to them to fix it.

But can they fix the rot at the core of Bleake Isle while facing an intense attraction to each other??

Dun dun dun. Cue that sweet, sweet romance set with a heavy dose of spice.

It was no surprise to me that I enjoyed this story—I am obsessed with Kathryn Moon. I'm always going to read what she writes. Always. But I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting to fall utterly in love with this story. The dragon thing tied to the historical vibes...Those are not buzzwords for me as a reader. But then I tried it, and DAMN. I'm into it now. (Or at least, I'm into the version of it that Kathryn's given us here.)

This was sweeter than I expected it to be. This was more plot-filled than I expected it to be. And it was just... perfect. I loved Ronson and Mairwen. I loved the unique spin on the alpha/omega tropes and setup. Every expectation I had was clearly blown away, and I find myself eagerly sitting on my hands now, waiting for news for more in this series/world!

Thank you to the author for my early copy.

at this point, we know the drill. kathryn moon writes a book, and i drop everything in my life and crawl into bed with my kindle to read it in one sitting.

but i gotta say... not a fan of this one. the characters and the relationship was really well written, but two major complaints on everything else going on:

1. this world was so confusing and unnecessarily cruel to women. although i understand it's victorian and old timey, it was so reminiscent of the handmaid's tale. i was so surprised that an author who typically writes such progressive worlds regressed to this? women competing with each other for men and forced pregnancy and 90% of women dying in childbirth and women having basically no rights other than being sex objects. i guess it was supposed to make you love the male love interest and the main character even more for finally attempting to break free of that, but i was sad for all the women in this book and questioning why it had to be that way.

2. i'm gonna be honest.... i'm never here for the plot. and this book had so much of it that wasn't engaging. there's so many other dragons and alphas introduced that i didn't care to keep track of. and because the world was so fucked up, there was a lot of focus on the drama and politics that emerged from it and i just didn't caaaare. i wanted to skim read this book every time ronson (hate his name btw) had to go and deal with the other whiny men. it was also just SO predictable and had zero subtlety or twists. 400 pages was somehow not enough and way too much for what was trying to happen here.

the saving grace of this book was the writing style because everything else fell short of my expectations of kathryn's usual craft. i didn't even accomplish reading this in one sitting because i got bored :( probably won't be continuing this series which is shocking kindle-unlimited read-in-2024 romance ...more24 s3 comments Rayne346 101

That man is DEVOTED to her.

This is a dragon, omegaverse with an alpha who’s finally ready to pick his omega, a curvy omega FMC, knotting, fluff, of course smutt, and a really sweet romance. The FMC Mairwen, is an unly omega. She was considered the wallflower of the bunch and undesirable to the dim witted betas but not to the alpha. He was her. I really loved seeing their relationship develop from strangers to friends (who d to rub each other as all friends do) to lovers. It was a very sweet romance but even without any angst between the two, it still captured my attention and held on throughout the book. The world building was also nicely developed. This is a romance focused book/series but it is nice have a clear idea of the world around them and trying to figure out what the outside conflicts could be. I heard each book my have a different vibe to them but anything Kathryn Moons writes I’ll read so I’m excited! paranormal-monster22 s6 comments readabookonce217 233

REVIEW
I really wish the book ended with Mairwen punching her parents in the face, but I appreciated the nuance of parents doing horrendous damage to their child’s wellbeing, yet still (in their own twisted way) having their best interest at heart. Mairwen deserved better, yet she’s able to see that the people who mistreated her are multifaceted.

Ronson was a surprising character. He often reacted or said things in a way that would’ve unintentionally hurt Mairwen out of a desire to protect her from the aforementioned cruelty of their people. I found him to be sweet and charming despite his blunders. He’s may be a bit of an idiot, but he’s no fool!

There were times in the novel that I sped through, and there were times the story kind of dragged. So much time was spent on the formation of alliances and the calculation of where loyalties lie. The politics were so interesting, and then the resolution felt quick and somehow abrupt. I thought the usurpers had a genius plan, but they DID NOT. It was disappointing. Although, not so tragically disappointing that it took away from the romance or build-up of the plot.

I’m excited to see where the world might go from here. There was a lot of reform left to make, but the resolve and influence to make those changes were there. The other alphas were intriguing, and I do hope to see these main characters make appearances in the future.
