A twenty-eight year old ex-soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder caused by an explosion in Afghanistan where seven people died, Max decides to become an English Literature teacher at a local college, where she catches the eye of a drugged up eighteen year old and a keen poet, Frances.
The two women dance around their mutual desire for each other which turns into a blissful, life-changing but career-threatening relationship when Max receives anonymous messages threatening to expose their secret love unless the teacher supplies the person with a large amount of cash. The situation causes Max to alienate Frances, which leads to the girl then leaving town.
