Dollycas’s Thoughts

Maggie Cumberland didn’t have a care in the world. Her father paid for her pink convertible, her condo, and her shopping sprees, a girl can never have enough shoes or purses. Now her father is dead and died with a lot of debts. So her car is repossessed, she is evicted from her condo, and the only shoes in her future are going to be a tough pair of work boots. You see, according to her dad’s will Maggie will only inherit his trucking business if she goes to work, doing a real job for the business. She must make three deliveries.

Maggie thought it would be a piece of cake until she learned driving a semi is nothing driving her pretty pink convertible. She needs a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) which entails several hours of study before taking a test. She also has to learn to actually drive the truck. On top of that, she learns her father was being threatened prior to his death. The threats have continued making her question everything about his death. Could he have been murdered?

Can Maggie handle everything that has been thrown at her? Will she make her first delivery? Or will she be squeezed right out of the trucking business?

Magpie Maggie Takes the Wheel is the first Longhorn Trucking Mystery. My father-in-law was a long-haul truck driver so I know a thing or two about the profession. I jumped at the chance to review this book.

Yes, Maggie was a selfish young lady and she wasn’t close to her father at all but she got an awakening when she learned several things about him from his employees. She didn’t have any idea about truck driving but when she realized she didn’t have a choice she put everything she had into it. I know the written test isn’t easy and driving an 18-wheeler takes practice and patience. I had to suspend reality a little bit because Maggie took to it way too fast, especially backing up the huge truck and trailer. Even experienced drivers have trouble. She was tested when out on the highway too, and while stressful she handled it.

Ms. Brown packs these pages with a lot of action and excitement. Sabotage, threatening notes, a break-in, a Molotov cocktail, clues found in strange places, slashed tires and one heck of a highway incident had me absolutely clued to these pages.

In addition to all the action, the author has filled this story with plenty of humor and introduced some interesting characters, dispatcher Jace Kimble, accountant Bryant Skipton, and her oldest friends, Sheila and Trudy. While we have a pretty good bead on one person, but the other three should continue into the next book where I hope we get to know them even better.

Everything was not wrapped up at the end of this story and the author apologizes for that
