Well this was a fun read and something a little bit different.
Nikki is involved in a case that goes slightly wrong and put on sick leave while the mess up is investigated.
While she's on sick leave she's given an opportunity to trial a new AI program, called Sherlock to begin with but soon became WHIP. She's given four cold cases to try and solve using the program.
She's joined along the way by Anouk her Bermese Mountain dog.
Meanwhile her team are investigating the death of the owner of a self driving car business. Was it murder or did the car malfunction and run him over.
There's also tension with local gypsies and the problems they cause when they come to town.
The book is set in Milton Keynes, somewhere close to where I live so I could imagine some of the locations which is fun.
The angles of AI and self driving cars was really refreshing and I learnt a lot while I was reading which is always a bonus for me.
I really d Nikki, she seems to have a lot of crap thrown her way by old fashioned antiquitated male attitudes. I hope Jai is OK, I d him immediately.
Can't wait to read more about these characters.1 Lynda1,552 87

Book 1 of the new DI Nikki Ross crime thriller series set in Milton Keynes which features the use of AI in resolving crimes alongside the usual police procedural methods. Highflying Nikki and her team have the chance to crack two ongoing investigations but the case goes wrong leaving one member of her team fighting for their life and her career in tatters. She is blamed for the fiasco and put on suspension. As the first in a new series we learn about Nikki’s life, past and present, and are introduced to Anouk, her Bernese Mountain dog.

Briefly, whilst at home waiting for her hearing, Nikki is given an opportunity to test an AI system to solve a cold case, inside a week, which might save her career. With pressure mounting she then comes across a live case which nobody else is investigating.

As the clock ticks what can Nikki do to redeem herself and prove the new system works? The technology aspects of the book were fascinating although it will take a lot to convince me to get in a car without a driver! This was a really interesting concept which brought a different dimension to crime investigating. An enjoyable read and I’ll look forward to the next chapter. authors-arc2 s Deb538 13

I love this author’s work, so I was looking forward to reading this book which is the start of the new DI Nikki Ross series.

Nikki is involved in her own case when she is dragged into the surveillance of another which goes a tad awry. She is put on sick leave while that is investigated but you can’t keep a good one down. She is approached to trial an AI program called Sherlock but it soon morphs into WHIP. Her remit is to try & solve some cold cases but it soon becomes apparent that a live case pulls her in. I’m not sure self-driving cars are going to be in my immediate must-try future.

I loved Nikki & I can’t wait to see how her character develops & whether Finn features in it too. Jai was also great, it’ll be interesting to see where he ends up. Lastly, Anouk. When I was small, I always wanted a Bernese Mountain Dog & now I’ll have to live vicariously through Nikki. Oh well, cheaper & no fur balls!
An easy read & I can’t wait for book two.asked-to-read Linda Fallows768 1 follower

This is a great read! A fast paced storyline and solid, believable characters, and I love The addition of the dog into the story. The pace of the story keeps you reading, wanting to know what happens next. I only have one small criticism, and that is that the title makes me think of an "adult" book rather than a thriller. Maybe a rethink of the title may be in order? Overall I solidly recommend this book to anyone who loves a well written book. Jackie Sharp2

This was an excellent start to a crime series. The protagonist, DI Nikki Ross is a compelling character, and I enjoyed the way the author introduced her backstory throughout the book, avoiding an "info dump". A career obstacle results in an opportunity for the DI, and the plot unfolds with plenty of twists to keep the pages turning. I read the book in one sitting, and I am looking forward to book 2 in this series. Sarah900 5

An outstanding new series. I look forward to more of the same. DI Nikki Ross is given a chance to redeem herself and her career by partnering with a new officer. The difference being this new partner is an AI device. Nikki is highly skeptical about the usefulness of this device. She has 7 days to prove her worth and the worth of the device. This is a well written book and I highly recommend it. Kaz H36

Was given the opportunity to read this book. My first from this author. A really good story with a few twists and turns, I did not see the end coming. DI Ross was an interesting character with very strong opinions, this made it different and a must finish book. Holmes the computer extra was a first and I look forward to more of this involvement. A very good story and well worth a read. Louise Gordon24 1 follower
