Frustrated musician Willow Moore swaps her Brooklyn apartment with her best friend's little cottage in the Connecticut countryside after a miserable and humiliating experience as a performer. Her hiatus from music and city life doesn't go as expected. The cottage floods and she's forced to share space with her hot, grumpy, standoffish landlord, Reid.

He's a former chef dealing with the loss of his father while trying to avoid reminders of his demanding, high-stress career and the painful memories of his past. Together Willow and Reid form an unly bond and help each other overcome trauma from their pasts while making tentative steps toward the future.

I adored this grumpy MMC and loved that cooking was his love language.4 s Harlequin Books17.2k 2,762 Want to read

Swap and Smell the Roses is my first from Karen Booth and I honestly can't wait to read more from this talented author. Booth sets the stage for Willow Moore as she struggles with her music career and decides to switch apartments with her bestie Bailey, sending her to the small town of Old Ashby, Connecticut. Right from the start, I could only imagine how much Willow would miss the sights and sounds of her beloved New York City, fearing almost by the minute her 8-week 'sentence' to live in the 'country' as a way to help out Bailey with a competitive writing course.

But then there was Reid Harrow. The landlord of the cottage Willow was now living in and as grumpy as Bailey described. Even from their first meeting when Willow interrupted his daily Tai Chi, sparks were still evident as she couldn't keep her eyes off the beautiful man. Of course, what follows is a bit of crazy, a whole lot of mixed signals together with that undeniable attraction that is bound to muddy the waters.

These two are truly adorable together. I loved Reid's constant frustration with the people-pleaser Willow and how all of the strife he held close to vest only made his temporary tenant much more curious about her landlord. She has such a good heart that it was not a surprise she charmed most of the town's residents including her new boss Faith becoming a true asset to the popular bakery. I really loved how Willow took any obstacle before her and conquered it in only the way she could. Her penchant for trying new things and trying hard to embrace former hurts and disappointments definitely affected Reid in ways he could have never imagined. To say she was the perfect balm to his closed-off persona is an understatement, especially as they embark on a fling that will undoubtedly make them feel more than they ever thought possible. I'm just glad Reid started to figure out his own issues in time to realize just how special Willow would be to him for not only the rest of the 8 weeks but forever.

This is a great story with wonderful characters and a realism to how Booth portrays what both Willow and Reid have had to deal with in their careers. With Bailey's book next, I'm thrilled we'll get more from this couple and get to witness how things are going for them. Speaking of Bailey, I have a hunch we'll be seeing more of Willow's brother Gabe since both he and Bailey seem to be harboring their own secrets that don't include Willow, much to her chagrin.

A perfect beach read for the summer of 2024, do not hesitate to pick up Swap and Smell the Roses. It's well-written and flows easily with each turn of the page. Truly enjoyable from start to finish and worthy of a huge 4 stars!2024-books arc Maria305 9

Willow was finally walking away from her dream, she'd always wanted to become a music artist. Its what she'd taken in college and she'd been writing songs since a young age. She woke to music in her mind, went through the day with tunes in her brain and even when she went to bed it was still constantly in her head. That was until she was booed of the stage at a venue she'd always wanted to play. It wasn't just her but her brother had witnessed it too and got a black eye trying to stop it. Now the next four weeks she was exchanging New York for Old Ashby a small town where her best friend lived. Bailey was coming to New York for a screenwriters course so Willow would stay in her house, hopefully she'd finally find something she could do and not fail again. Reid had finally moved back to his hometown, but a little to late as his father died not long after. He'd given up his life to pursue his own passion as a chef, he'd achieved more than he could've imagined. But he'd given up so much no girlfriend's, no holidays and his beloved father. All to burn himself put and give it all up anyway. So what had it been for. Nothing. Now he kept to himself and enjoyed being known as the grumpy man, not his father who everybody in town loved. That was until she turned his world upside down literally. She was living in the old cottage at the end of the garden while Bailey was away. She wasn't supposed to pester him. He wanted her to stay away, if he just kept up his grumpy exterior she'd leave him be hopefully. How was Willow going to spent four weeks here with him as a neighbour. Each of these characters have similar issues but at different ends of the scales. Can Willow's sunshine personality crack his grumpy, moody exterior. Can Willow find a job that she'll love and be good at. This is a story of opposites she loved the noises in the big city, he loved the peace of a small town. She loved helping everybody and she loved talking maybe a bit to much sometimes. Everything about this story is brilliant and draws you to each of their flaws and makes you just keep reading hoping they finally see what's right in front of them both. If only they'd accept what was in their hearts and what they really wanted. If you love a laugh out loud story this has it all. I can't wait for the next book.

In Karen Booth's charming novel, "Swap and Smell the Roses," Willow Moore's aspirations of music stardom crumble, leading her to seek solace in the serene Connecticut countryside. Trading her bustling Brooklyn apartment for two tranquil months, Willow embraces a life of rustic simplicity, where baking bread, visiting farmers' markets, and indulging in nature's beauty become her daily rhythm. However, her idyllic escape takes an unexpected turn with the presence of Reid Harrell, her enigmatic landlord and former chef. Reid exudes an air of grouchiness and reserve, a stark contrast to Willow's outgoing and loquacious nature. Despite their differing personalities, an undeniable chemistry sparks between them. As they engage in banter and heated arguments, Willow senses a flicker of pain beneath Reid's gruff exterior. She begins to realize that they share a common past of chasing success and the disillusionment that followed. Willow's infectious enthusiasm gradually chips away at Reid's stoic demeanor. Unexpectedly, one of their arguments inspires a creative spark in Willow, reigniting her passion for music. This newfound inspiration awakens something within them both, drawing them into a whirlwind of undeniable passion. As the summer draws to a close, Willow must grapple with her desires and aspirations, including her enigmatic landlord. Reid, too, must confront his past and his longing for a quiet life. Through its exploration of dreams, heartbreak, and the transformative power of unexpected connections, "Swap and Smell the Roses" weaves a poignant tale. It is a reminder that even in the face of shattered aspirations, the path forward may lie in embracing the unknown and following one's heart, no matter where it may lead. With its vivid characters, enchanting setting, and heartwarming message, Booth's novel offers a refreshing and relatable escape for readers seeking a story that celebrates the beauty of second chances and the power of human connection. Wow, I truly enjoyed Swap and Smell the Roses by Karen Booth. When singer/songwriter Willow bombs at her latest show she decides she’s done with music, so when her friend asks to swap homes getting Willow out of NYC and to a small town in Connecticut she takes it despite having doubts. Her first encounter with her landlord, Reid, isn’t a good one and honestly the new few aren’t much better yet the chemistry between them is sizzling. I loved watching both these characters grow and change while becoming closer in ways neither one imagined.
Despite being a bid downtrodden that her dreams of becoming a star not working out, I found Willow to be one of those people who makes the best of her situation. Second day in town, she secures a job, begins to make friends, and has another run in with her landlord who she is convinced hates her.

Reid just wants to work his garden and try to move on with his life. Once a well-known chef, after a rough time Reid returned home only to find out his Dad was sick and he loses him soon after. He’s sad, wants to be alone, and for some reason his new tenant who he doesn’t want to admit makes him smile, just won’t leave him alone.

A flooding washing machine has Willow moving into Reid’s guest room in the main house and with each day they discover more about one another. Despite Reid trying to maintain distance between them Willow breaks down his barriers and soon their attraction become a full fledge fling.
I loved the slow burn of this story and enjoyed watching them work out their individual issues while becoming closer in all ways. While there was a good deal of sadness in this book, there was a lot of humor, friendship, and healing going on as well.

Karen Booth never disappoints and Swap and Smell the Roses is exactly what I look for when I read a book by her. Well developed and interesting characters, a story with depth, steamy intimate moments, and a very satisfying ending.

Aspiring musician Willow has decided to call it quits after completely bombing on stage one night. Her best friend, Bailey, lives in a sleepy town in Connecticut, and has been accepted to a screen writing seminar for the summer in NY, which is where WIllow lives. They decide to swap homes for the summer, so they can both get the clarity they need.

Once Willow shows up to the town of Old Ashby, she meets Reid, Bailey's landlord, who is as grumpy as he is hot. And you can guess how it goes from there.

Look, the premise of this book as been done before and it's a cute premise. However, this book just didn't work for me -- though it probably could work for other people. There are a lot of sex scenes that are spicy, if you that. Reid is the quintessential grump with a heart of gold. Unfortunately, the writing style was overly simple for me, and I felt I was reading Taylor Swift fan fic or something. The characters are a bit overly-tropey and one dimensional. The plot is very straightforward and predictable. There's a big helping of instalove. I got half way through the book and decided to speed-read skim the rest because I wanted to know how it turned out, and it was what I thought it would be. Now, if you love swapping places romances, dual perspective, instalove, and spicy scenes, you might really enjoy this. The two stars isn't that it's bad, it just feels it's still in development and could have used some more refining for my tastes.arc--book Julie Eichelberger-Ford786 7

Swap and Smell the Roses is the first in the new series by Karen Booth. This is a grumpy meets sunshine and the thaw leads to happily ever after. Willow has always dreamed of being a famous singer/songwriter but after being booed and jeered off the stage, she is ready to quit her dream. Her friend needs a place to stay in the city and she needs to get away to decide on her next step in life so she goes to Connecticut to stay in her friend's cottage. Her first day isn't going so well and she must approach her grumpy landlord to get a key to enter the cottage. Reid is dealing with burnout from his career as a chef, recovering from an accident and grieving the loss of his father. Reid has struggles of his own and just wants to be left alone but Willow wants everyone to her, so she is constantly in his space. After flooding her cottage, causing severe damage that needs immediate repairs, Reid reluctantly asks her to move into the main house with him as he begins working on the cottage. Spending so much time together leads to the attraction that they are both struggling to resist since Willow is only there temporarily but fate has different plans as they both learn dreams and goals are sometimes not always what you really want and that love cannot be denied. This is a wonderfully written story with a range of emotions, steamy connections and a love to last a lifetime.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily posting a review. All opinions are my own.
I previously read a Harlequin title from Karen Booth, and while I didn’t much care for it, I was open to trying her again. And Swap and Smell the Roses sounded charming. While the trope of a big-city girl exchanging that life for a small town has been done before, I loved the charm Booth infused in this story, particularly the cottagecore vibes.
Willow is an easy protagonist to root for. I really appreciated her reflections on the music industry, both good and bad, and enjoyed seeing her ingratiating herself in rural Connecticut.
Looking back on my initial review of the prior Booth title, a big turnoff for me was the grumpy/sunshine dynamic, so I was a little wary that this had a similar premise. But while Reid had his rough edges that made him hard to at first, I found myself warming to him. And Reid, Willow, had his own dreams he put aside for his own reasons. With these serving as a vehicle for their connection and them helping each other realize their dreams again.
Overall, I really enjoyed this, and with this being a “life swap” book, I can’t wait to see what happened to her friend Bailey! I recommend this book if you’re looking for a quick, light contemporary romance.

Swap and Smell The Roses - Karen Booth
What a fabulous book!
I loved this story of Willow Moore who dreamed of being a musician her entire life and is crushed when her last performance does not go well . She decides that music is no longer for her and switches apartments with her best friend Bailey. She moves to a cottage in Connecticut and her friend moves into her Brooklyn apartment.
The only problem she foresees is how she will manage to deal
with her landlord , Reid Harrell, who is not friendly at all and just wants to be left alone to tend to his garden. Reid is a former chef who was very successful but he paid a price for his success and suffered a burnout at a young age. After the loss of his father it is just too much for him to handle.
As time goes by Willow manages to get under Reid’s skin and he becomes an inspiration for her to start writing and playing her music again. They agree to a “no strings” relationship since she is only staying for 2 months.
After her performance at an open mic night with her music being well received., her brother signs her up to open for a big star and she has no choice but to do it which will mean leaving Reid to go back to the city.

Will this make or break them? This book is a must read! Patti Greene64 2

I could not put this book down! I loved it. It did take me a little bit to warm up to Reid but half way through I did. Willow is renting his cottage, making Reid her landlord when she switches with her best friend for the over. She will go to Connecticut and her friend Bailey to New York. Willow loves music but had a bad experience making her not want to play again. Reid was more of a cranky/rude guy to start with. He was a former chef and recent lost his dad, which was extremely hard on him. He was a loner not talking to really anyone. Willow sure tried though. A flood at the cottage happens forcing Willow to move in with Reid. This is where they start getting closer and closer. Reid letting his walls down and Willow getting back into her music.
I loved the transformation in Reid. Willow really made him become a stronger guy and more open and loving.
I would definitely recommend this book.
Soon we will get her friend Bailey’s book. I am thinking that will involve Willow’s brother Gabe as well. Can’t wait Karen1,071 25

Swapping homes with her best friend sounded a good idea but when Willow, a city girl through and through arrives in the Connecticut countryside she has a rude awakening. Or rather is locked out of the cottage and comes face to face with the rudest and hottest landlord she has ever met. Willow quickly realizes she has got to get on Reid’s good side or the next two months are going to be a disaster. But things only get worse. The cottage floods and Willow must temporarily move in with the gorgeous grump. She gets a part time job at the local bakery which ignites friendship and a much better outlook on the summer. Willow has put her dream as a singer/musician aside and as painful as it may be the bakery is the perfect place to keep her mind occupied. When Willow and Reid realize that their chemistry is off the charts they are too busy hiding behind their fears to face the truth about each other and their dreams. Adorable, fast paced and a little steamy, this romcom had an idyllic setting and sweet romance. chef music roman ...more Dominque Newborn68 2
