With the death of his beloved, King Heldar sinks into a deep depression. Wishing to rouse him, Rothar decides to search for Heldar's illegitimate daughter, hoping that their reconciliation can bring some life back to the ruler of the kingdom.

But Rothar's past with Daralis is a troubled one, involving a most regretful incident, and finding her is only the beginning of his troubles.

Following a hazy trail across the seas, skirmishing with deadly pirates and islanders, this may be one of his most difficult missions yet.

A fast-paced, full length, heroic fantasy novel.

This was a pretty good story. Some of it felt a little contrived. The scene with Waya is s good example. The heroes did nothing other than tell her that they were on her side and she automatically believed them. From what I could gather, up to that point she had no reason to trust the "little ones".1 Anders338 4

The book is well written, but there are some large shortcuts in the story. It is a series, why things hopefully will be further explained, but the end fight was cut short in a few places.

I had two other issues with the book:
In the north where the Kingdom resides, the secret assassin happily, almost eagerly, kills whomever the king has heard is bad. Inhabitants of the forest (bandits) or the south (more often described as devils or dogs than men) are ok to kill on sight. Killing them quickly is optional.

It's strange that only the assassin comes to think of using the very poisonous plant together with weapons. It's being used in many traps (by the bandits) and to protect defense installations (in the kingdom).

Having complained a bit, I still think it's a fast-paced, well written story. The backstory glimpses add a lot of value and it was easy to visualize the different settings. I bought the whole series as a bundle and will start on the next book today.fantasy Chad Malone95 10

A fairly good and written book about the kings royal assassin sent forth to kill a merchant who is kidnapping children. Its got plenty of action and a good bit of backstory about the main character Rothar. But the so called evil villain of the story could have been written better and needed to appear more and as far as im concerned have a better reason to use blood magic and sacrificing children for gaining a youthful look and the villain died fairly fast and easily But despite that i am actually interested in getting the next book in the series. a well made dagger

Rothar performs a deed for the King that is not spoken of. being an assassin is not a job many would want. but this time he is a hunter and is lucky enough to have some unusual help in seeking his prey and saving the innocents that are suffering in his kingdom.

I really Rothar. he's resourceful and intelligent. he is given some great pro/antagonists to play against. the locations are well-rounded Diego DizAuthor 4 books8

"Assassin's quest" de Jon Kiln es una lectura ligera y entretenida. Dentro de sus páginas vemos como el asesino real salva el día. Me gustó la historia, la ambientación y los personajes. El principal, Rothar, me recordó un poco a "Roland" de Stephen King, ya que es un personaje inteligente y con recursos. En lo personal siento que le faltó indagar un poco en la historia de los personajes, pero espero conocer un poco más de ellos en los libros que vienen. Alicia Brewer303 10

This was surprisingly well written. Written by an author not well known and what looks to be self published, it was enjoyable and very clean as well. The story was solid and the characters were decent. I enjoyed this heroic fantasy. It was a dark Robin Hood spin. There are two more and I will definitely be finishing the trilogy.want-to-read-historical-fiction want-to-read-suspense Oy Geeringh112 26

Fast pace with enough action to keep me interested. But I feel the characters & the story is a bit bland for my taste. There's nothing to intrigue me to the next book.fantasy Julie Bird1,000 12

Good story, it just felt the author could have gone deeper with the characters. Renee135 7

A protector at heart, Rothar uses his position as the royal assassin to get justice for victims and those less fortunate-which is precisely why he has been given his new assignment.
It is supposed to be easy; he knows everything he needs to know about his target and the victims who need justice. It should be simple...but its not.
Rothar gets his man, but it isn't long before he realizes there is more going on. Conspiracy, coverups, betrayal, treason, and much more collide to turn this straightforward mission into a life-or-death quest for justice, vengeance, and the truth about what is really happening in the kingdom.

I don't know where he gets the time or inspiration, but Jon Kiln has once again written a fantastic book that you need to read. Assassin's Quest is the first book in Kiln's new Veiled Dagger series, and it sets the bar pretty high for the rest of the books. Of course, if you've read his other books you already know the bar was up there.
Kiln is an extremely talented writer. All of his books are full of amazing people and places that he brings to life clearly and easily-not to mention the stories that keep you drawn in from beginning to end-and this one is no different. The characters are fully developed, complex, layered people that you can believe in and relate to, you feel you are dropped right in the middle of the action, you can see everything perfectly in your head as you read, and it is hard to put the book down once you start reading.
Everything-and I mean everything-about this book is great. Kiln really does transport you to other places with his words, and he makes you feel part of the story. If you haven't read his books yet, you need to start now. It will not take you long to understand why he is so good. You really can't go wrong with anything Kiln writes!favorites read-again Stephen Levesque2,284

Royal assassin, Rothar, is on a routine mission. Tasked with quietly eliminating a lecherous merchant with a penchant for young children, Rothar's blade strikes without hesitation. But when more children go missing, Rothar digs deeper and discovers an insidious network that reaches high up into the echelons of nobility. What started as a simple mission has become a dangerous quest for justice. Rothar must call upon all his skill to punish those responsible, and rescue the innocent before it's too late. A fast-paced, full length, heroic fantasy novel.
Rothar is a great charater, and with interesting friends, makes for great reading and holding your attention till the end. You will not be waisting your time reading this book. Great Reading Everyone! Jeff5

Character development is minimal. There's some back story for the protagonist, Rothar, but as much as I wanted to him and his friends, I just never developed an emotional connection with any of the main characters. Possibly the sequel will explore their relationships in more depth.

Most disappointing is the anticlimactic ending. The main antagonist is unknown and largely invisible throughout the story, but is clearly described as a powerful individual with nefarius intentions. However, this supposedly dangerous person is dispatched without so much as a whimper. A story about an assassin deserves a deliciously gruesome death for a character that evil. Quite unsatisfying to say the least. Kelly Lynn Author 1 book14

A suspenseful yet touching story!

I loved the main character Rothar! He's on obviously a tough guy since he is an assassin, but he also has a much gently side to him as well. He was given a tough mission, that others couldn't complete, to kill the person behind taking innocent children. He seemed to finish this task rather quickly in the book and I wasn't sure where the story was going to go, but of course the author had a great twist to his story and the task become a little more personal for Rothar! It's a toughing but suspenseful story that I highly recommend! Ian176 3

I d the hook of this book: The King's assassin goes forth to save the day.

The execution of it was lacking and I wont continue the series. I expected a certain bit of moralistic writing from reading the synopsis but its really hard to get behind a cold blooded assassin walking the moral high road and trying to be an honorable person. Then projecting those same attitudes on other less lawful segments of society. Forest bandits protecting the crown while robbing travelers? That's hard to swallow. Mary217

I've been quite late with this review so I think I will publish my notes. I did the book for what it was and found it a comfortable read. Notes:
Genre read. clear simple sentences(non-flowery). plot with some comfortable expected characters and plot points. But also some unexpected happenings, so a nice mix. leaves open for sequel without cliffhanger, I that. able lead although he is a murderer(he's a "righteous" murderer).

I know that's not much of a review but I did win this book from FirstReads so I feel I should but something here.first-reads indie-self own ...more Larry E Kelley28
