My thanks to Canelo Press, J.M. Hewitt and Netgalley.
Oh, dear gods, this story just about broke my heart.
I have a love for books that are set in the Arctic, on deserted islands or on boats. This one hit my sweet spot!
I kept hoping that Ashley/Annie wasn't dead. That it was all a horrendous mistake, but it was not to be. Still, I really enjoyed getting to know the crew, and was completely envious of the life.
I loved reading how this all played out, and while I confess that the ending was satisfying, it still felt just freaking awful.
The ending of this story almost felt it could be a beginning for a few characters, and I'd definitely be down for reading more!
Guess I'll have to check out some other books by this author.33 s1 comment Dannii Elle2,119 1,705

This thriller's synopsis mentioned that it was penned for fans of the reality TV series Below Deck and I was immediately sold! No pleasure should be guilty but the amount of hours I have dedicated to watching that show is a little guilt-inducing.

I thought this initially was an accurate account of boat life, but this is the opinion of someone who is judging it based from what she has seen from a reality TV show so take from that what you will. The work was gruelling, the hours were long, and the living quarters cramped but the cast was young, healthy, and as ready to socialise and party as they were to work hard and receive big tips.

The drama and the crew were a brief and primary focus but a death in their pasts lent a sombreness to their antics on board. They were very different to the people they had once been, working and partying together a year ago and before the death occurred. Very quickly a past perspective was then introduced and the reader learned about the deceased from her own perspective.

This was were the book's focus strayed from where I thought it would be and became an insight to this character's personal history rather than her very brief time aboard a boat and before her death. I did not dis it but it wasn't personally what I had come into this book looking for.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, J.M. Hewitt, and the publisher, Canelo, for this opportunity.adult-books-read adventurous-acuity mysterious-miasmas ...more9 s Donna Mallery524 46

This is my first book involving a yacht and the activities of the crew. At first, I wasn’t sure if I would it, but I grew to love it!! It was intriguing, full of suspense, emotional, and everything in between. There’s plenty of mystery, It also splits into two different stories until it all comes together. I would definitely recommend it, and now, I will be seeking more books by this author! Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!7 s Mark1,330

Pic of a boat/yacht and a quick skim of the blurb that says ‘Elle loves working on a luxury yacht at sea’ and its a no brainer for me and am ready to go
All the elements were there;
Luxury
Annoying entitled guests
Staff-with secrets
Wonderful Greek setting
All that was needed was a story to pull it all together
And there was one and it wasn’t half bad, unusual, relaxing in it’s telling and interesting in it’s tales of 2 sides of the harbour
One side brimming with luxury
One side overflowing with homelessness, rats, abandoned ferries and misery
Good characters on either side to get your brain picturing the story….maybe the thrust of the story was easy to work out, even so it was enjoyable and as say different to the usual ‘on board’ tales that I love, a poignant modern day look at what is hidden under the surface of first class travel…..6 s Alicia L291 11

I sadly didn't enjoy this one very much. I really wasn't a big fan of any of the characters and I found that the random switch from Ella's story to Annie and Robyn's to be very jarring. There wasn't any warning or explanation and it felt we just started a totally new story for a few chapters before it made sense again.

I was excited about the premise because I loved the idea of it being set on a yacht. I think I just didn't love the execution and the writing style wasn't for me. I also didn't feel the payoff of the ending was worth it and it seemed a bit too predictable and convenient.

Other people really enjoyed it though, so I think it's a me problem where it just wasn't to my personal taste.

As a huge fan of Below Deck and thriller novels, The Crew really had me intrigued. Murder on a super yacht in the Greek Isles? Ummmm…yes please!!

The Crew starts out very Below Deck-y, which I loved!! J.M. Hewitt has to be a fan of the show, right? Captain Carly Lee is a total blend of Captain Sandy and Captain Lee. We start out a year after a crew member was killed during charter. Captain and crew reunite after that devasting last charter in hopes of healing as a group and pulling together for a great season. Not everyone is happy to be back. Something about the death just isn’t sitting right with Ella, the chief stew, and she sets out to learn more about the mysterious stew that died.

This is where the comparison to Below Deck stops for me and it turns into full out murder mystery with not a lot of yachty life, which was totally fine for me because I love a good mystery!! We go back and forth between present day and the previous year, learning more about the stews backstory, while also getting Ella’s POV during her investigation. Both storylines are really interesting, and I did find myself wanting to keep reading to learn more, but I do wish we had gotten more of a peek into the yachty life.

While I did the concept of this book, it did feel clunky at times, and the overall execution and writing style was not my cup of tea, which is such a shame because I went into this expecting to love it!

Thank goodness, that's over!

The storyline was good (at the beginning) but it dragged! The chapters were long and the rhythm (of the writing, if that makes sense) was repetitive.

And I'm sorry, that ending?! WTF what that about?

I think the author got three quarters of the way through and thought either 'F***, how do I end this?' or 'F***, I have to write three hundred pages overall but I've written only 200!'2 s She Griffiths-Gibson184 2

Another great read, enjoyed how it went back and forth with the storyline xxx1 Kat181 2

Unfortunately this fell flat for me. I didn’t how the book was split almost into 2 stories. There was lots of mystery but I found it kind of surface level. Nothing I was dying to read.

The below deck reference really made me want to read it. But i didn’t find it as intriguing as originally thought. Not my favourite read unfortunately. The ending was alright but i did see it coming.

A Write to Review

Note: I received an advanced copy of this book from Canelo via NetGalley.

Ella finds solace in her nomadic life, working on a luxurious superyacht, which allows her to escape her past and embrace a fresh start among -minded individuals. Each summer, she returns to her chosen family, the crew of the Ananke. However, the previous summer was marred by tragedy when a deckhand, Ashley, met a fatal accident. Ashley had been charismatic, skilled, and beloved by all, making her loss particularly devastating.

Despite the crew's grief, the Captain believes the best way to heal is to reunite the team on the Ananke once more. However, they soon discover that Ashley had been harboring secrets and living a double life. As they set sail again, it becomes evident that the events of the previous summer were shrouded in deception. The crew must unravel the truth, as they suspect that someone may have gotten away with murder. This thrilling and suspenseful story keeps readers on the edge of their seats and is ideal for fans of Catherine Cooper and Cameron Ward.

As a devoted fan of the hit TV series "Below Deck," my excitement for this yacht-themed thriller was palpable. The initial chapters seemed promising, with a female captain who had years of sobriety under her belt, reminiscent of the show's captivating dynamics, I thought the author was a fan of the show too. However, my enthusiasm quickly deflated as I delved deeper into the story.

First and foremost, the glaring contradictions in the crew composition left me perplexed. With a potential guest capacity of twelve onboard, having only two deckhands raised immediate questions about the yacht's operation. Moreover, their inexplicable intoxication hindering anchor work during a charter contradicted the professional standards expected in the yachting industry. Charter guests are typically served with utmost care, and crew members are expected to maintain their focus and sobriety during charters.

The misalignment continued as a green/third stewardess was tasked with anchor duties, an unly scenario on a real superyacht. In reality, a green stewardess would predominantly handle tasks such as laundry and cabin cleaning rather than crucial deck responsibilities. The inexperienced stewardess accompanying guests on an excursion, especially in her first week on the job, was another departure from reality. Also, how does a foster child acquire a diving certification and expertise?

Furthermore, the crew's behavior during the ongoing charter struck me as implausible. The crew engaging in romantic relationships and neglecting their duties seemed inconceivable in a professional yachting setting. Especially since they were excessively drinking WHILE on charter?!?!

Ashley's excessive paranoia added another layer of incredulity to the narrative. AND the Captain calling herself captain in the third person was just annoying!

While I hoped for an authentic yacht thriller inspired by "Below Deck," the story's deviations from the reality of the industry left me wanting more consistency and believability. Nevertheless, the book offered some suspense and intrigue, but it struggled to capture the essence of the world it sought to portray. If you know nothing about the yachting industry then this is the book for you.arc thriller Gali 117 3

Cruises, secrets at sea, and murder? Count me in! I love books that are set on Cruise Ships, so I was happy to receive this ARC. "The Crew" by J.M. Hewitt takes place in Greece after the epidemic hit the world, revolving around a few protagonists.

The book begins with a bang - a murder, no less - and then moves forward a year to the present time. Ella, the chief stewardess on the superyacht Ananke, and the rest of the gang come back to the superyacht after the death of a crew member a year earlier rocked their world. When Ella finds the diary of the dead deckhand, where it states she believes to be stalked, Ella suspects the deckhand was murdered by one of the crew or even the guests. The plot thickens when Ella finds out the dead girl wasn't what she seemed to be, nor is Ashley her real name.

We then move backward into the past, following the story of two orphaned girls, Robyn and Annie, who came to Greece for a new beginning. The middle section details the events that led to the murder in the first act. The book is written in the third person POV and split into six sections, in alternating timelines. The middle part of the book develops slowly and, very methodically, creates an increasing sense of paranoia one can almost feel. The story comes full circle in the last section, tying together all the threads.

The plot was gripping, and I definitely felt emotionally invested in what was going on. The author has done a fine job of interweaving the various storylines. The book explores several themes, such as revenge, loyalty and friendship, crime and its consequences. While my suspicions about the guilty party were correct, despite the red herring the author threw our way, I didn't guess the motive and the ending left me agog.

My favorite sections were those that took place on the yacht. I enjoyed reading the descriptions of life on the yacht and all it contained. I d Ella and her backstory added another layer to the plot. While I d Annie, I did think she was too naive for her own good, letting herself dance to her friend's tone. Also, their illegal entry into Greece made me raise my eyebrow. Their reasons for doing so were unconvincing, but then it was a necessary part of the arch of the story to explain their desperate circumstances and their following actions.

I enjoyed the book and will be glad to read more books by this author. I thought to rate the book 4 out of 5 stars due to the slow-paced middle section, but the brilliant last section changed my mind. I found this a unique and original concept and rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend the book to those who are looking for something different in their books and love mysteries at high seas.

Setting a story on a yacht or a cruise ship is a great way of creating a "locked room" environment, and thereby enabling the ratcheting up of natural tension, and creating a heightened sense of atmosphere.

As a book, The Crew delivers well on this front, with Ella's increasing anxiety seeming quite relatable under the circumstances.

Ella loves her job as a crew member on a luxury super yacht, but her return to the job this year is tinged with sadness, given the death of a colleague the previous year. Ashley was popular and well thought of, so her death adversely affects other crew members as well as Ella.

But when she finds a diary which seems to indicate that there was more to the story of Ashley's death, including the existence of a possible stalker, things take a decidedly dark turn. It gets even more complicated when it turns out that Ashley was not the crew member's real name. So was anything that she told them about herself real?

It was interesting to see how the two parallel stories show very different experiences of life on the water. And I d the fact that the captain was female - though not so much that she referred to herself in the third person!

Similarly, a couple of things seemed a little unrealistic, including the level of alcohol consumption and the torrid romance taking place while on the job.

I know nothing about charter life, so perhaps that is an accurate portrayal? The airline industry certainly seems to have a lot of wild living behind the scenes, for example. But here, it doesn't seem to be consistent with the safety standards one would expect of this kind of venture.

Overall, the book was an entertaining read, with some minor caveats, such as those mentioned above. It's a good choice for those who murder mysteries with nautical settings.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

"The Crew" by J.M. Hewitt is a riveting thriller that delves into the deceptive tranquility of life aboard a luxury superyacht. The novel opens with Ella, a seasoned crew member of the Ananke, who cherishes the nomadic lifestyle the yacht offers. It's a life that allows her to escape her past and bond with a close-knit community that understands the allure of the sea.

The narrative takes a dark turn with the death of Ashley, a beloved deckhand whose demise the previous summer casts a long shadow over the crew. As the Ananke sets sail once more, the crew must grapple with the reality that Ashley's life was a tapestry of lies. The central question that propels the narrative forward is chilling: If no one knows who you truly are, can a murderer walk free?

Hewitt masterfully weaves a tale of suspense and mystery, where the idyllic setting of the Greek seas contrasts sharply with the undercurrents of deceit and betrayal. The story ebbs and flows between past and present, revealing the intricate web of relationships among the crew and the secrets they harbor.

The characters are well-crafted, each with their own complexities that add depth to the unfolding drama. The setting itself becomes a character, with the Ananke's opulent decks and the vast, unforgiving sea providing a perfect backdrop for the psychological thriller.

The pacing of the book is impeccable, with each revelation adding to the mounting tension. The climax is as unexpected as it is satisfying, leaving the reader to ponder the nature of truth and the facades we maintain.

"The Crew" is a tale of secrets lost at sea, of lives intertwined in a dance of pretense, and of a truth so elusive it might just slip through the fingers the ocean's tide. Nicole289 13

Thank you to Canelo Susoense & NetGalley for an ARC of this book, in exchange for my honest opinion.

Annie and Robin have fled the UK to Greece, hoping to restart their lives after a tumultuous childhood spent in care of the system. Arriving in the middle of a Global pandemic, they struggle with finding food and shelter, why they have no money. One stolen passport later Annie becomes Ashley and gets a job as a stewardess on the Super yacht Ananke.

The crew of the yacht treats Annie (now going by Ashley) as one of their own and really enjoys having her on board. But by the end of the first charter Annie feels she is being watched by someone. Is it someone from the crew? Or someone who knows the real Ashley here to share the secret that Annie stole the passport? But before Annie is able to figure it all out, she is murdered. And now the crew is trying to piece it all together, because nothing is making sense.

Told in alternating points of view from the crew in the aftermath of Annie’s death, and the time leading up to Annie’s death, a web of jealously and deceit is spun. When I tell you I did not see the twist coming in the last cheaper, I was shocked. My favorite types of thrillers are the ones that wrap the story up with a big bow, and leave absolutely no unanswered questions, and this was one of those!

(Fair warning it did get kind of complicated to be cognizant of Annie and Ashley being interchanged as two names for the same girl, and even more confusing when they also start referring to the real Ashley). Laura791 104

I enjoyed The Crew, a thriller set on a luxury superyacht where a woman was found dead in mysterious circumstances during the last season. JM Hewitt does a much better job at conjuring up the atmosphere of this world than virtually all of the recent summery thrillers I've read set on boats, islands, beaches etc., and that alone made it worth reading. I also appreciated that Hewitt didn't distort her plot to deliver endless 'twists': the solution to the mystery is quite simple and guessable, but this made this thriller more readable and engaging for me. Having said that, the structure of this novel is a little frustrating: while we start with a current member of the yacht's crew, Ella, in present day, most of the book is actually an extended flashback from the point of view of the dead woman, filling us in on the events leading up to her death. This reduces the tension, and also makes Ella's arc feel oddly truncated (I had the same problem with Catherine Cooper's The Cruise, which introduced what seemed the protagonist of the story and then basically dropped her). Aspects of the writing and editing also felt amateurish. I was unconvinced by some characters' Victorian backstories and, on the micro level, there were quite a lot of clunky sentences. However, this does stand out a bit from the crowd, and I loved the depiction of crew life. 3.5 stars.

I received a free proof copy of this novel from the publisher for review.3 s Jenny M184 4

Ella works on a luxury superyacht. For the past few years, Ella has gotten to know her fellow crew members. They are a close knit group. One summer, they yacht is short a crew member. Ella hires newcomer Ashley, who is sweet, bubbly, and hardworking. However, tragedy strikes, and Ashely dies in an onboard accident.

Fast forward to the next summer, Ella and the crew are set to sail on the same yacht again. Ella finds out that Ashley was not who she said she was...and it seems that someone was out to get Ashley.

This book is split into a few parts. We start in the present and then jump back to learn about Ashley and her story. We then jump forward to the present, where Ella is trying to figure out what happened to Ashley. The flashback to Ashley and her story is the vast majority of the novel. Essentially, this novel is an extended flashback. To me, this took away from the suspense and made Ella's connection feel quite remote.

Overall, this novel is an interesting concept. However, the writing and actual execution of the story didn't really do it for me. Further, the twists were very predictable, including the ultimate final twist. Nonetheless, it is a quick, easy, and mainly enjoyable read.

Thank you Canelo and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. M Holden4 2

This is my first read in this particular setting and I must say that I really enjoyed it, very much. It actually managed to transport me into the world that it is set in, which is obviously a must when reading any book.

I found myself captivated from the very start and didn't feel I had to keep reading to find the hooking point. I was immersed very quickly. It is a nice easy read with great pacing. There's no point in which you start to feel disjointed from the plot. It flows naturally and picks up exactly where it needs to. There are no unnecessary fillers to the story, and I never felt I wanted to skip by any parts. It was easy to visualise it in my mind and it really takes you out of your surroundings.

The characters are interesting and well written, and it's nice (as a reader) to have characters that you genuinely care about. 'The Crew' doesn't feel bloated at all.

It all builds up to a great and worthy conclusion to the story that I couldn't have been happier with.

Now, I've used to word 'it' in reference to the book and its story, but it's important to mention the author herself. J. M. Hewitt has created something wonderful to read and, for that, I am thankful. 'The Crew' is the first novel that I have read of hers, but I will definitely be seeking out the others.

Thank you. Lavender547 17

Unfortunately this book was not for me. I was intrigued that the story was set on a yacht. But after a few chapters I got irritated by the random change of the POV from Ella to Annie. I found her story at first quite boring and could not connect it to Ella. But at that point I was already annoyed by the author’s writing style. There is something off with her writing. I could not picture any of the places or the yacht, there are too many convenient accident and obviously Athens, Greek, is a very small place because you run into the same people all the time. And I doubt that working on a luxury superyacht is actually that.

I must admit that this book rubbed me the wrong way. I did not care for the characters because they were all flat. We get to know Annie the most, but her paranoia was really annoying. The story got repetitive after a while and it all centered on Annie’s paranoia. And the end… I don’t know. I really did’t care enough anymore at that point but I find it rather unly.

In my opinion, this book was shallow and not well written. Sorry.

The Crew is a "closed boat" thriller set on a luxurious superyacht a year after the accidental death of one of the crew. Part of the book rewinds time and tells you what was happening the year before leading up to the accidental death and then both timelines catch up with one another and you get to find out what really happened,

I really enjoyed the ending of this book. I feel it brought everything together, which is exactly what you want in the ending of a book. The twist was good compared to the predictability of the rest of the book. The prologue tie in was my absolute favorite part of the book. I multiple POV narration but this one was a little confusing for me with different timeline's on top of that. I think that added to the mystery and suspense of the book but it just fell a little short for me.

Publication Date for The Crew by JM Hewitt is 19 October 2023. Ashley57

I was excited to read this book because it takes place on a yacht. Boats always bring a sense of claustrophobia to a story and when that story is a thriller you know it's going to be good.

I enjoyed the pacing of this book. The chapters are longer but they are broken up into segments which are easy to read. It is also told from multiple POVS and past/present timelines.

The characters were pretty interesting, especially Annie and Robyn. Their backstories were really interesting. I d that each character had a specific trait that the story focused on, guilt and loyalty. This book definitely shows how guilt can ruin a person and how loyalty plays a huge role in making/breaking friendships.

It was a bit predictable at times, but that didn't deter me from wanting to know how it ended. I will say the ending took me by surprise.

If you boat settings, past/present timelines and murder mysteries, this is the story for you.

Thank you to Canelo and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

This book starts out with an introduction to a character named Ella who is a Chief Stew on a luxury yacht in Greece. An unthinkable thing has happened to one of her staff and the book continues with reliving the timeline leading up to that event.

In the middle we are introduced to Annie and Robyn who arrived in Greece from the UK with no money and no place to live. They depend on each other to make it through each night. The story goes into great detail with how these two characters met and go to that point in the story.

The author really captivated my interest with certain things happening that help figure out the ending. I was surprised at how the ending came about. It was well written.

I would recommend this book if you have enjoyed reality shows such as Below Deck as it reminded me of that to a degree as well as multiple POVs throughout the story. Maggie1,798 58

Ella loves working on luxury yacht Ananke. She has worked her way to the top of the housekeeping tree & enjoys coming back to her yachtie family at the start of the season. However this season is a bit different. The last one ended abruptly with the death of one of the stewardesses in an awful accident. Ashley had been a friend to all the crew & will be much missed. Ella wonders if her death was an accident as Ashley had confessed that she felt she was being stalked

Annie & Robyn were brought up in care & planned to run away to the sun. Although they didn't have passports they managed to get to Athens & in the wake of the Covid pandemic managed to find a place in the tied up ferries. Annie wants to get a proper job whereas Robyn prefers to live off stealing from others.

I really enjoyed this book. Tales of life aboard the yacht was fascinating with a good cast of characters the kept me guessing. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.1 Rachel Gilbey2,979 541

What a wonderful twisty tale this is.

Based on the prologue, I was wondering if this might be similar to other thrillers set on yachts / boats I've read recently, but once it got going I could tell this was definitely different.

And refreshingly so, for the tragedy happened a year ago, but was it really an accident and how affected were the crew from Ashley's death, as they reconvene on the same ship with the first same set of guests.

And just how well did they really know Ashley.

Split into multiple parts, we get not just what is happening this season with Ella and the crew, and how suspicion is being pointed in all directions, but also the previous summer in real time too, as we get to know far more about the victim.

Loved discovering just where this book was taking me, and was gripped throughout.

Thank you to Canelo and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily. 1 Kirsty Hinchliffe84

Set on a super yacht in a post covid world, this book had an intriguing feel to it. When one the yachties is involved in an apparent tragic accident, the boat is taken into police custody as they work to uncover what actually happened. The book picks up one year later as Ella and her fellow team return to yacht for the first time, ready to get it set-up for the next charter. As Ella starts to unravel the events of that night, she starts to pull the pieces together.

The book is split across two timelines, following Ella initially before focusing on Annie and Robyn.
The plot is intricate, as both Ella, Annie and Robyn’s lives collide with catastrophic consequences.
A decent read, that is fast paced and gripping.

Ella works as part of the crew of a super yacht. Last season one crew member, Ashley, died in a tragic accident. How the whole gang are back together minus one. But Ella can’t shake the feeling that it wasn’t an accident and she begins to investigate, suspecting everyone on board.

I enjoyed this. It was a really good read. It was told in 5 parts. These included before and after the accident, but also Ashley’s backstory and how she came to be joining the crew. What really happened to Ashley is built up slowly. All the different characters have believable personalities and are able as individuals as well as a team. The ending is completely unexpected and just before that, the twist of revenge is completely out the blue. Definitely recommend. Patricia Williams155 5

An interesting book with a novel subject matter. It held my attention although I did guess before the end what was going to happen. All the action happens on a super yacht in the Greek islands and Athens Marina. Annie and Robyn are two runaways who enter Greece illegally and try to survive post covid in the ferries moored up in the marina. Stealing and begging for what they need to survive. Annie gets the chance to work on a super yacht and sees a way to escape. But Robyn isn't happy about anything she can't control. Throw in a crew with problems of their own and things get very out of control! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy. Ella is the main steward on the crew of the Ananke and loves her life as a yachtie working on a luxury superyacht.
At the start of the story she is returning to work on the Ananke following a tragic death of a new deckhand that cause the ship to be docked for an investigation. The captain has brought the group together again with the idea of moving forward but some of the crew cannot forget. When Ella finds the deckhand's journal she realizes all is not what it seemed and there was more than on person who might have wanted Ashley dead.
