My son (4th grader) & I read this book together for the Mom/Son Book Club we formed. I'm hoping to instill in him a love of reading. This historical kids novel was interesting for both of us to read because it takes places where we live in South Carolina. It even has discussion questions in the back.1 Thirteen Orange Ivy Designs 118

Very quick read, it's written for middle school age children I believe but I to read literally anything set in the American revolution. I found this story fun and enjoyed my short time in this world. I'd love a full novel of this story because it was good an interesting! And I learned a few things which I loved.
It follows 13 year old Maggie who is a rebel in South Carolina during the British occupation.
All in all I found it enjoyable although too quick! I gave it 4 stars because the ending didn't satisfy me, I needed to know what became of several characters. Chena Bean71 1 follower

This is a good novel to use while teaching the Revolutionary War as it is about a young girl whose plans are changed when the war begins. She wants to take over her father's plantation, but is sent to live with her aunt who has differing views because she's a loyalist. This short novel is a great text to help teach perspective as it is written in 1st person. It's an appropriate text for upper elementary students who need a lower level text.historical-fiction Rachel660 3

The advantage of this book is that it's slim so it's not intimidating for kids. The problem is that enslaved people are described as friends of the family who happen to work on a plantation. Gross. Do better.historical-fiction mid-grade-kiddos school ...more Srosch748

A nice quick read with good detail about a young girl’s story of how she helped the rebels in the Revolutionary War. RDC5

I guess I expected the story to go a bit further. It's probably the right length for the intended audience. It was fun to see this story was set in the South.library Isabel9
