I love testing out new authors through short stories - easy time investment, you get an idea of their writing style, and in this case, I am hoping to decide if I want to continue on with the full novel Sea of Broken Glass.

The story is told through Elodie's point of view as a child, and set 20 years in the past. We see her, her sister, and her parents living in a village by the sea. We learn a little bit about the world's history an beliefs in the stories her mother Volta tells Elodie and get a glimpse into magic, called Singing, that Volta can perform. Then, tragedy strikes. It's hinted in the synopsis but I did not find Volta's devolution because of the Burning Rain truly impactful. The little battle she has with the priestesses is not very tense.
This story itself does not have any queer rep but we know that Elodie grows up to be aroace.

Nothing in this piece really feels it's adding something that I would not also expect in the full backstory (her mother's past, the sibling relationship, how the magic works) - so I'm not quite sure why this was written.
I also don't think it does a particularly good job of keeping us in a child's perspective - no idea if Sea of Broken Glass contains any flashbacks, so that might not be relevant but I felt it could have leaned more into Elodie's age.

A short tale

This really was a short book, I’m guessing some kind of prequel, but it didn’t really set the scene.
There was little description of the characters and no real reason to why things were happening. Melissa Jones33
