Depois de ler o magnífico e marcante Eu Confesso, da autoria do catalão Jaume Cabré, instalou-se em mim o interesse por ler mais obras do autor, que utiliza um estilo muito próprio e desafiante de contar as suas histórias. As Vozes do Rio Pamano (no original catalão “Les Veus del Pamano”) promete na contracapa ser “um grande romance sobre a guerra civil de Espanha”.
Assim, ao interesse pela restante obra do autor somou-se o interesse histórico por esse período fracturante da história recente de Espanha. Agora, depois de lida a obra, julgo que o período histórico abordado é o franquismo e as inevitáveis consequências sociais da guerra civil que o precederam. Aliás, a história decorre nos anos 40 e a guerra civil espanhola terminou em abril de 1939.

A história decorre na aldeia fictícia de Torena, inserida nos locais reais do “vale de Àssua, maravilhoso vale do Pallars, maravilhosa comarca de Lleida, maravilhosa província da laboriosa e maravilhosa Catalunha” (pág. 445), poderíamos acrescentar “maravilhosa Espanha” mas isso não consta do texto e se tiver em conta o facto de Jaume Cabré escrever todos seus livros em Catalão, é impossível não retirar daí um significado político.

Sobre a geografia do local recomendo vivamente que vejam esta reportagem da rtve.

Devido ao sucesso da obra de Jaume Cabré têm sido organizadas excursões pelos locais descritos na obra, apesar do local central da obra, a aldeia de Torena, ser fictícia. http://www.elperiodico.com/es/noticia...

A personagem principal da obra é Oriol Fontelles e a obra começa com a mudança toponímica e o estilhaçar da placa que indicava a “Calle Falangista Fontelle”. Oriol vai para Torena como mestre-escola e vê-se enredado e dividido entre a (necessária) devoção franquista e a ajuda à resistência maqui (sediada em Toulouse e que se escondia na zona montanhosa).
Oriol Fontelles mártir ou assassino? A obra coloca em questão a verdade histórica. Normalmente a história é contada pelos vencedores e por isso parcial. A este propósito, foi impossível não me recordar das palavras Svetlana Alexievich nesta entrevista concedida ao jornal Público, em que afirmava que “A História colectiva é uma grande mentira e a verdade não cabe numa só mente, é uma sinfonia de vozes.”

A história de Oriol é-nos revelada pelas mãos de Tina Bros, em 2001 professora em Sort. Esta personagem descobre um diário de Oriol Fontelles que nos conduz ao “outro lado” da História. A personagem, na sua vida pessoal, vê-se confrontada com indício de um adultério e com a vocação monástica de um filho no séc. XXI. A propósito de Tina, adorei o pormenor do gato com nome de personagem literária, Yuri Andreievich (da obra Doutor Jivago).

Julgo que as principais temáticas abordadas na obra são o franquismo, a resistência na Catalunha, a vingança face ao que ocorreu na guerra civil e as várias perspectivas da verdade histórica. As estes temas interessantes junta-se o intrincado estilo de Cabré e uma ironia subtil e inteligente. Em suma, Jaume Cabré merece ser lido!

Não resisto a relatar algumas coincidências que ocorreram enquanto lia os livros de Jaume Cabré.
Enquanto lia Eu Confesso fui assistir a uma palestra sobre um poeta alemão que desconhecia por completo, Friedrich Hölderlin. Um, dois dias depois, Friedrich Hölderlin apareceu referido no livro Eu Confesso, tendo as personagens passeado junto da torre em que Friedrich Hölderlin viveu em total reclusão as últimas décadas da sua vida. Achei uma coincidência curiosa, pois se não tivesse ido àquela conferência, a referência a Hölderlin e à sua torre de reclusão não teriam sido compreendidos da mesma forma.
Tanto em Eu Confesso como em As Vozes do Rio Pamano é referido o convento de Monserrat. Não sendo um local central das obras, mas de passagem ou de reclusão das personagens. Nas obras não existem grandes descrições do local nem do edifício (talvez por as obras serem escritas em catalão e pensadas tendo como público-alvo os leitores catalães e por isso redundante descrever aquele edifício incontornável da Catalunha. Não esquecer que a internacionalização das obras de Cabré ocorreu devido a um estrondoso sucesso de Eu Confesso na Alemanha). Enquanto lia As Vozes do Rio Pamano descobri este blogue de viagens e deparei-me com umas magníficas fotos do Convento de Monserrat. Fiquei estarrecida e cheia de vontade de o visitar.


Sobre a Guerra Civil Espanhola espero aprofundar conhecimentos na exposição sobre Guernica no Museo Reina Sofia e de Jaume Cabré traduzido para português só me falta ler Sua Senhoria.

Em Eu Confesso amei sem reservas Jaume Cabré, que se me finou nos braços ao som das lengalengas de As Vozes do Rio Pamano.

O estilo dos dois livros é o mesmo: mistura de vozes e tempos, mas com grande arte, nunca permitindo que o leitor se perca.
O enredo é interessante, mas pouco para 653 páginas. Ou seja, fazendo as contas por alto, 200 páginas de assunto e 453 de repetições. Por exemplo, quase sempre que se fala de uma personagem é com a "certidão de nascimento narrativa completa", assim:
"Marcel Vilabrú I Vilabrú, filho de Oriol Fontelles Grau (dos Vilabrú-Comelles e dos Cabestany Roure) e de Rosa Dachs Espluges (dos Vilabrú de Torena e dos Ramis de Pilar Ramis de Tírvia, meio puta e meio é melhor não falarmos nisso por respeito para com o pobre Anselm)".
Vão variando os nomes, mas mantendo-se a "meio puta" e "o pobre Anselm". Aguentar isto dezenas de vezes enfada muito.
Só não desisti porque ando a passar por uma fase "sovina" em relação aos livros e custa-me desperdiçá-los. Então, sujeito-me a ruminar fardos e fardos de palha.

Partindo da premissa que este livro serviu de treino para Cabré escrever, sete anos depois, o extraordinário Eu Confesso, acho que valeu o exercício e o meu sacrifício. Por isso, perdoo-lhe a "seca" e deixo as três estrelas...e3 n-espanha17 s Georgia Zarkadaki 409 105

The voices of Pamano, Jaume Cabré

Each time I enter Jaume Cabré’s world, I feel absolutely taken aback by his narrative. It feels he’s composing his own symphony – sad and beautiful – using words instead of score. With time his symphony grows greater and greater, praising History, Memory, Artist and his Creation, and yet it always comes back to the origin – a tiny human being in the center of the universe capable of both wonderful and horrible things, to remember and to forget, to create and to destroy, to love and to hate. For each bit of Cabré’s sophisticated symphony there’s a special theme. In The Shadow of the Eunuch he explores Memory and Family, in I confess he dwells on the question of Evil and how malevolence impacts our lives, in The Voices of Pamano Cabré studies Revenge and History and what both these forces are able to do to a single fragile human being.

There are a few topics to which Jaume Cabré keeps returning in every book of his I’ve read so far, or, I’d better say, there are a few stones which he repeatedly uses to build the world of his novel or short story. First of all, it’s History. Cabré has a unique ability to switch tenses in a smoothly flowing narrative as if there’s nothing more natural than going back in forth in time, changing centuries, settings, characters in a flash. This superpower gives him an opportunity to go as daring as he wishes, and create a story where there’d be a medieval monastery, Spanish Civil War, modern-day Vatican, SS officers and some antique store (and you wouldn’t even question how it all made its way into one book). Cabré is never shy about creating the historical background for his novels. In The Voices of Pamano he places a tiny village at the foot of the Catalan Pyrenees in the middle of The Civil War and then World War II and then – Francoist Spain, making a village where (seemingly) nothing happens, the epicentre of everything. At first glance, Cabré writes something resembling local history, where things make sense only being put into some context known to a few. One does not choose to write about an insignificant village teacher (who maybe was a member of the Falange and by indirection responsible for his pupil’s murder) Oriol Fontelles, when one is about to write about History and torn apart Spain. And yet this is exactly what one should do, if one wants to show how merciless History is and how the great and mighty who rule sitting in a fancy office affect lives of people in a tiny village lost somewhere in the mountains. On a scale that small every trait that we, human beings, possess, becomes more prominent – every treachery, as well as every act of kindness, is a matter of life and death; every brave deed takes a lot more courage as it’s done with a faint hope to make a difference in the world of the small, not in the world of the great; every war is a personal war; every man, being a part of the community, writes his own history as he lives, the one to be remembered or forgotten if only in the local context. To illustrate History, Cabré often paints a tiny aquarelle instead of a huge fresco which proves to be heartbreaking and heartfelt. The second stone is Memory. To remember means to exist. In Memory lies Cabré’s characters source of grief, comfort and motivation. It may be closely connected to History stone in this particular book, as the historical memory and a memory of individual are two driving forces in The Voices of Pamano. There’s Oriol Fontelles who wants to be remembered by his beloved ones as a man he really was, not as a man he was forced to become. There’s Tina Bros who feels obliged to pay tribute to a memory of someone she didn’t know. There’s Elisenda Vilabrú who’s burdened with her memories – one of the revenge she ought to take and one of love she needed to endure. To remember here never means to forget or to let go, and yet there’s also a faint memory of the necessity to forgive – both History and people. The third stone is Love of all sorts (the ancient Greeks would’ve been proud) - familial love, passionate love, brotherly love and the love for God. Love, though, is very rarely happy in Cabré’s stories. He prefers to explore bonds it makes between people and the consequences of these bonds. This means to focus mostly on parents who cannot reach an understanding with their children; on lovers who cannot be together; on brothers who betrayed one another, on God and the pious in vain search for blessing. And yet, in The Voices of Pamano love is a source of strength. A strength to rise after the fall, a strength to endure, a strength to revenge, a strength to carry on. Though never a strength to forgive.

The characters Cabré creates to build a novel out of those aforementioned three ‘stones’ travel throughout his books. Chances are that if you met a despotic father in your first Cabré’s novel, you’d meet him again and again, as well as you’d meet a God's fool or an infinitely loving person, or an unhappy woman bound to her family (mainly to her husband), or a faithful servant, or an unfaithful lover. It might have been boring, but Cabré’s effortless talent turns a repetition into a pantheon, giving Cabré an opportunity to use and explore every archetype as many times as he wishes. In fact, to me Cabré is a living proof of what a writer could do with narrative and every single word within it if he’s free (and gifted) enough to treat it without too much effort.

Every time I finish reading Cabré’s book, I end up thinking (despite all that I wrote above) that this particular book I’m holding in my hands right now is a stand-alone, the one I can safely call my favourite, and then comes the next favourite stand-alone. Therefore, as long as this chain goes on and on, I’m a lucky reader. However The Voices of Pamano is a stand-alone in a certain way. It’s the book I’d recommend to get acquainted with Cabré’s writing. Un The Shadow of the Eunuch or I confess which may seem overextended, The Voices of Pamano seems to be overexciting in regard of the plot which gives you an opportunity to enjoy both the way story unfolds and the story itself.

Della Spagna e degli scrittori spagnoli non so nulla, ma ogni volta che me ne capita uno per le mani è sempre una piacevole scoperta. Anche questa volta le recensioni positive su anobii mi hanno ben indicato. Il romanzo è notevole, avevo usato questo aggettivo una dozzina di volte in questo mio commento, prima di rivederlo perché non somigliasse ad una ripetitiva filastrocca.
Si tratta di una avvincente saga di paese ambientata nei Pirenei, ma anche di un avvincente romanzo epico. L’ambientazione parte dalla guerra per finire ai giorni nostri descrivendo così non solo il conflitto ma anche tutti i cambiamenti che nel frattempo sono occorsi nella vita quotidiana delle persone in Europa. Qui mi viene da osservare che la guerra è gran brutta cosa, ma dal punto di vista strettamente letterario è una manna: il bravo scrittore può trarne quel che vuole. Al di là, naturalmente, delle necessità di memoria e testimonianza, che in questo romanzo hanno grande importanza. Direi che il tema della memoria è il principale, cui la guerra, la vendetta, la vita di paese, gli amori e le difficoltà di vita quotidiane fanno da contorno.
Lo scrittore riesce a inserire nella stessa narrazione - con molta eleganza ed ironia - quello che i personaggi dicono e quello che gli stessi pensano e ricordano ma che non possono o non vogliono dire, e questa forma di coralità dà un notevole gusto alla lettura. Inoltre la linea temporale è frastagliata, con salti in avanti e all’indietro nel tempo ma questo non interferisce con la scorrevolezza del testo. Le ardite sovrapposizioni temporali ottengono anzi di dare alla lettura un effetto molto cinematografico.
L’intreccio delle vicende e dei personaggi è complesso come un meccanismo di precisione, quel genere di struttura che lascia ricostruire gli eventi al lettore come in un puzzle. L’intero susseguirsi degli eventi attraversa i decenni conferendo allo scorrere del tempo densità e profondità.
Impossibile non apprezzare, specie per chi conosce la montagna, l’ambientazione molto realistica del paesino con le antiche dimore, i pascoli e le coltivazioni, gli anziani e i bambini, le famiglie storiche e le nuove arrivate, quelle più facoltose e quelle più povere, quelle che appoggiano il fascismo e quelle che simpatizzano per i partigiani, con i vecchi rancori che si sommano a nuovi odii.
Forzando un po’ la mano, se si sostituisce il microcosmo del paese con il macrocosmo di una intera nazione, direi che si presta fin troppo bene ad una lettura allegorica per descrivere la presente situazione socio-politica in Italia (anche se presumibilmente questo non era per nulla nelle intenzioni dell’autore): la ricca signora come una sorta di caimano compra tutto ciò che riesce a comprare con il suo “fai sempre tutto ciò che devi fare se ritieni di doverlo fare” e con la sua visione di bene e di male, e con la sua possibilità di influenzare il punto di vista delle persone, si mette in competizione con Dio e cerca di sostituirlo, finisce per pretendere di riscrivere la storia, pretendere di stabilire la verità per tutti, per coloro che la amano, per coloro che la odiano, per coloro che si approfittano di lei e/o dei suoi soldi, e anche per tutti coloro che non la pensano come lei. Elisenda Vilabrú, poate personajul principal, cea care creaz? un imperiu economic în perioada lui Franco, îl men?ine ?i îl dezvolt? în perioada restaura?ie ?i face orice pentru a-?i atinge scopurile, cea care trage toate sforile în poveste, Marcel Vilabrú, un copil râzgâiat, ?i Valentí Traga un tic?los însetat de putere. De altfel, mai toate personajele din prim plan au tare morale ?i sufer? de egomanie. Toate sunt obsedate de putere fie c? e vorba despre cea politic? sau economic? ?i vor s?-?i domine partenerii indiferent de rela?iile care se nasc între ele. Singurul personaj mult mai bine construit e Oriol Fontelles ale c?rui frici ?i fapte îl fac mai credibil. Cred c? dincolo de amestecul de tehnici, problema romanului este credibilitatea: personajele nu sunt veritabile, nici m?car sub aspectul pactului facut cu fic?iunea.

This is definitely one of the best books I ever read. I came across it by chance.
The novel is set in different time periods ranging from the Spanish Civil War to today. It tells the story of what really happened in a small village in Cataluna during that war and how these occurances still affect people today.
The author has a very interesting style of writing: he sometimes changes between the period he narrates and the narrator in the middle of a sentence. In the beginning this makes it a bit difficult to understand what is happening. But after some time you get used to this style and it really gives a special design to the story.
I have recommended this books to lots of people and absolutely everyone loved it. So a really recommend it to anyone here as well.favorites9 s Dobre Cosmin75 16
