Sinopsis

She sees the future with a touch, a powerful gift in a time of war. The enemy wants her. The Allies need her.

Addie Brandt is cursed. When she touches someone, or an object that belongs to them, she sees their future, and it's rarely good. Mocked and teased her whole life, Addie hides from the world in her family's funeral home. But when her second sight shows her a horrific vision of an attack on the Pearl Harbor Naval base, the gruesome images are too intense to ignore, and she tries to raise the alarm. Will anyone listen?

Federal agent Jack Dunstan needs a miracle. He's still reeling from the betrayal that nearly decimated his team of agents with paranormal powers, a vengeful Nazi spy with a terrifying ability of his own is out to destroy him, and he knows it's only a matter of time before America is drawn into the war raging around the world. Hearing rumors of Addie's vision, he seeks her out, hoping she could be the miracle he's looking for.

Addie's not sure she trusts Jack Dunstan. He's rude, cocky, and insists on calling her curse of second sight a "gift." But if she wants to save lives and prevent a terrible disaster, she must put aside her fears and doubts and learn to embrace her ability.

With the US on the brink of war and an enemy agent hunting her for her power, Addie must learn to trust Dunstan—and herself—to stop an attack that could change the course of history forever.

It’s December 1, 1941 and German-American Adelaide “Addie” Brandt just wants to work quietly at her father’s funeral home and stay out of the public eye. Her ability to see people’s futures from touching them or even an article they’ve touched has brought her nothing but misery. No one ever believes her, but when her prophecies prove true, they blame her for events over which she had no control. Now she’s content to work with the dead, who have no future to predict.

Psychically talented FBI Supervisor Jack Dunstan wants to rebuild the team of agents with paranormal gifts and together with them fight the Nazis. Once a thriving entity, the team lost the confidence of their superiors after their previous leader turned out to be a German spy. Worse, Jack lost much of his own confidence after a misstep caused the death of the talented agent he loved.
Jack is on the lookout for extra-normal talents but Addie is determined to keep hers under wraps—until she gets a preview of the deadly attack on Pearl Harbor. Now her personal wishes must take second place to her patriotic duty. With her family under attack for their heritage, she tries once more to share her knowledge of the future with a disbelieving world. She’s deeply attracted to damaged hero Jack Dunstan, who understands her gift and believes her prediction, but it’s difficult to tell friend from foe in a country torn apart by war.

With the same deep knowledge of World War II on the American home front that she displayed in Beryl Blue Time Cop, Janet Raye Stevens once again invites us into a dark and exciting period in our country’s history as memorable characters fight to do what’s right in the face of impossible odds.

This is a fun read, if you noir-ish romance/paranormal books. It's set during the early days of World War II, so it helps if you're into the language and pop culture of that time period. Some of the standard romance novel tropes are lurking: those aside, there's also an examination of mob mentality and prejudice that is timely today. Addie, the h, must come to terms not only with her supernatural talent for seeing into others' futures and the attitudes of her town and family towards her, but she must also determine where she stands with her German heritage. And while the plot overall is light escapism, there are some "Dead Zone" vibes and a couple of satisfyingly creepy scenes. I thought Addie was a sympathetic, well-fleshed out character and I d Jack, the H, from the beginning but even more as I got into the story.

The only reasons I'm giving this book 4 stars instead of 5 are that it got off to a bit of a sluggish start, and there were a few plot points that made me go "hmm" along with a smattering of scenes that seemed a bit disconnected. POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD.................................................................. For example, I couldn't figure out why Jack chose to test Addie's abilities out in public, with the eyes of everyone in town already on her, and why she would agree to it, when she's tired of being a "freak." Also, Addie is strangely indecisive after deciding to join up with Jack. She wants to try to get him alone to talk to him. But right after he saves her from the townspeople's wrath, she declines his ride home, saying she's just going to walk to work (?). Also odd: Addie's cousin Marta seems unaware that Addie was attacked, but wouldn't Marta have heard the commotion from where she was or at least have caught wind of the news? There is never a family discussion about the event, or even a question about how Addie got away. One more detail that bothered me: Addie is a sheltered girl; still, it's hard to believe that she never asked Agent Thompson for a form of ID and immediately bought his story after meeting him.

There is a nice level of slow-burn steam between Jack and Addie, and I really d how their powers meshed. However, there is nothing more than kissing, in case this is deal-breaker for you (maybe in a future book in the series?). A subplot involving Michael, another of Addie's cousins, and Jack's partner Virginia is interesting and I felt it could have been even more thoroughly developed.

The ending is action-packed and there was a nice twist that I didn't see coming. Everything is tied up well, with an implication that this could be the first book in a series. I would definitely read a follow-up, if that's the case.

If you prefer straight-ahead romances with a lot of historical detail this may not be the book for you, as it has a bit of a comic-book tone, but it's perfect escapism, and a nice change of pace from the vampire/monster/ shapeshifter paranormals that are inexplicably still the rage.

Bottom line: This is an entertaining book and I look forward to reading more by this author.

A Moment After Dark by Janet Raye Stevens is a captivating novel that seamlessly weaves together elements of history, paranormal mystery, and suspense. Set against the backdrop of World War II, this book takes readers on a thrilling journey through a world filled with secrets and intrigue.

The author does a remarkable job of immersing readers in the era of World War II, with vivid descriptions of the wartime setting and the struggles faced by the characters. The historical details are meticulously researched and add depth to the story, making the events feel all the more real.

The paranormal elements of the story are expertly woven into the narrative, adding an extra layer of suspense and mystery.

It's not easy to blend scifi/fantasy with WWII era mystery in the vein of '40s films, but Stevens pulls it off. You have the wit, romance, and dark suspense of films All through the Night and The Fallen Sparrow, while you also have a government agency setting out to form a group or people with special powers that hints at both the X-Men and The X-Files. With a main character, Addie, whose special "sight" enables her to inadvertently "see" the attack on Pearl harbor in advance, you are drawn into a world of noir twists and double-crosses obscuring who can be trusted. Stevens' main character is an intelligent young woman struggling against self-doubt and social biases, who finds her way and her strength through exciting trials and a prickly romance. The depiction of a New England fishing town in the 1940s is spot on, giving us the gritty world of noir. I look forward to more books in this series. Sue47

Another excellent book from Janet Raye Stevens. This is a stand alone (though I'd love for her to get carried away with some of the very interesting secondary characters). The main female lead has been able to see the future for much of her life and hides away to keep it secret. But when she sees an attack on a naval base, she feels she needs to do something. The adventure that awaits is scary, thrilling, heartbreaking, and challenges her in so many ways. This book was a roller coaster of the highest order! So many ups and downs. Even with the dire circumstances of the plot, Stevens still manages to find time for a bit of humor and snark. Always welcome to break up the racing of your heart. If you a story with action, danger, suspense, and a little bit of romance, then try this one out. Highly recommend! Opal EdgarAuthor 3 books9

For readers looking for a light romantic historical fantasy. If you the WWII setting, spies, bad baddies and a lot of swooning for a relaxing holiday read, this is for you. The writing style is very light and breathy, lots of action, lots of romantic tropes and the s. This isn't exactly my style so I wasn't hooked, I don't really read romances so it feels strangely unrealistic. Don't ask me why vampires are okay, I totally suspend my belief, but if you have people going about magically making normal humans fall in love with them so as to gain the trust of a girl, I bulk. It feels too contrived and I start rolling my eyes. This all comes down to what you enjoy in books, and knowing romance is on the horizon isn't what makes me keep turning the pages. An entertaining WWII Paranormal Suspense set in Massachusetts
Addie Brandt is a young woman who is suffering from a supernatural "gift"--if she touches someone, or an object belonging to them, she see their future, and it is rarely good!
As the story opens, it's the eve of WWII and she's hiding, working in her family's funeral parlor. But she accidentally touches a deceased man's tie pin, and she is thrown into a premonition of the Pearl Harbor attack. What will she do?...
This was a wholly unique, fun read. The author includes lots of details to bring the 1940s to life. I loved the "noir-ish" crime literature language. Very fun!

A paranormal story about Addie Brandt. She has a special ability to touch items or people and see into the future. And what she sees always come true. Addie tries to hide what she can do because people call her a freak. No one wants to believe she has this ability until she meets Jack Dunstan. He believes her as he also has paranormal abilities.
Will Addie accept and embrace her paranormal abilities?

What a fun read! I don't usually read paranormal suspense, so I didn't know what to expect, but I found myself intrigued enough by the end that I'm interested in the sequel. The author has a wonderful set-up for a series, with interesting characters. In fact, I'd love to read a prequel. She drops enough hints to anchor the novel in the present narrative, but the prequel story is tantalizing on its own to warrant a couple of its own books.

The romance subplot is sweet. Definitely, a great beach read this summer! Helena#bookdreamer1,177 10

Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was an intriguing sci fi mystery novel with a gentle but strong heroine who uses her gift of sight to fight evil. I also d the hero despite his flaws he cares deeply for Addie and becomes her anchor throughout. The romance was sweet and mild. It could have used more spice but it was enough to entice. A well written story. Tammy Buchli651 11

Paranormal / historical fusion. The paranormal bit worked a bit better than the historical, as it didn’t evoke WWII as much as I prefer. But it had a fun comic book vibe that I really enjoyed. I’d be happy to read more of these if it turns into a series.

This was my first time reading a paranormal WWII book & I must say I enjoyed Steven's writing! I hope to find more of her works.
Join Addie & some family members in a tale of suspense, paranormal gifts, & love all set in a few days span of December 1941. Katherine Decker1,248
