Me retracto con respecto a esta serie.

Comenzaré por admitir que la empecé con el tercer libro de la trilogía y que es bastante probable que la mala opinión que vertí sobre él se deba en gran parte a que me había perdido los dos libros anteriores.

"La pirámide asesina" sí es el primer volumen de esta serie y me ha gustado y entretenido bastante más que el tercero. Aun así, no puedo darle más de dos estrellas a la novela. La forma de narrar de este autor en ocasiones llega a parecerme pueril, como muchos de sus personajes, a los que no consigue dotar de tres dimensiones: los buenos son buenísimos y los malos, malísimos.

Continuaré la lectura de la serie con el segundo volumen y veremos si logro congraciarme con Christian Jacq, porque he heredado unos cuantos libros suyos y quizá el autor acabe por conseguir cautivarme...ficción-histórica6 s Sorcha806 16

I have no idea why Christian Jacq books are so popular - I found the dialogue stilted and forced, charactisation poor, little flow and no tension. I dont know whether this is because Jacq is a poor writer, or this book has been translated poorly (I hope it was a translate - Jacq being French and living in Switzerland - as if not, the fault is entirely Jacq's).

For example: within seconds of meeting the investigator for the first time, the investigator has given up his entire life story in a paragraph along the lines of "I grew up on the wrong side of the streets, I'm mean and violent and I dont care who knows it and I'll beat up and threaten anyone who gets on my wrong side whether you it or not". Literally.

The scribe is not better, always turning up late due to arguments with his wife, but the passages where this happens are not funny, threatening, enlightening and add little to the plot.

The judge keeps being told that he is making "powerful enemies" but you feel no fear of the characters concerned - and no empathy for the judge - so there is no engagement on either side to make you want to continue to the end2011 dnc4 s Aurelien Mons1 review

I had read the Ramses saga from the same author when i was a teenager and loved it.
After reading the Judge of Egypt #1, it is obvious that those books were written by the same author.

Although I d the investigation of main character, and the historic context of the story, I will not read the 2 others books of the saga.

I find the author to lack subtility in his writing : you can always guess from the physical description alone if a new character is a friend or a foe, the good ones are just too good while the bad ones are just too bad... Every character is a living cliché

I know if I was still a teenager, I would have loved this book, but even while I would to know the end of the investigation, it just cannot continue because of the writing style.

I highly recommend this book for teenagers, but not past 20 yo.

A ešte je tu Beltran, výrobca prvotriednych papyrusov. Mám z neho zmiešané pocity. Na za?iatku totiž stretávame ženu, ktorá chce ís? k Nebamonovi na plastiku (som nevedela, že toto Egyp?ania dokázali), lebo jej muž tvrdí, že je škaredá. Až neskôr sa dozvedáme, že je to Silkis, Beltranova manželka. Takže sympatie na mojej miske váh idú dolu, ALE zdá sa by? ?estný a pomáha Paserovi, ako sa dá, nestrpí nespravodlivos?, tak musí by? dobrý, nie? Toto je prvýkrát, kedy som pri nejakej Jacqovej postave na vážkach. Vä?šinou sú postavy bu? dobré, alebo zlé, ale táto je nie?o medzi. Tak uvidíme, ako to s ním skon?í.
Paser má, naš?astie, aj priate?ov. Doprevádza ho, nazvime to, policajná sila Kem a jeho šialená opica. Potom sú tu ešte Jarot, súdny zapisovate?, ktorý mi už len svojim dýchaním lezie na nervy, Branir, u?ite?, bývalý lekár, mudrc, ktorého, bohužia?, zastihol ne?akaný koniec, z ktorého som sa stále nespamätala a Suti, vojenský hrdina a Paserov kamarát, ?lovek prchkej povahy, ale náruživosti vä?šej ako Mount Everest.
A, samozrejme, nesmieme zabudnú? na krásnu, mladú a nadanú lekárku Neferet, ktorú šikanuje hlavný lekár Nebamon, a do ktorej sa nám Paser hne? za?úbi a, ?o je pod?a m?a v Jacqove dielach šokujúce, ona mu lásku hne? neopätuje. ?OŽE?! ?akala som takmer celú knihu, kedy sa tí dvaja dajú dokopy a ona mu nakoniec zabije, že sa ho nau?í ?úbi?? WHAT?! Žena! Sa spamätaj! Jediné, ?o ju zachránilo, je, že si na konci uvedomila, ako ve?mi ho miluje. Hoci to bolo trochu odveci.
Nako?ko som len prednedávnom do?ítala pentalógiu Ramzes a toto sa odohráva za jeho vlády, zaujala ma istá zmena mien. Myslím, že Neferet ostala, ale z Malfiho je tu Adafi a z Mathor Chattuša. Ve?mi zaujímavé. A ke? sme pri menách. Kemova opica sa volá Zabiják (ako Ramzesov lev) a Paserov osol sa volá Severný vietor (ako osol v Strome života alebo v Pisárovi).
Neviem, aký ?asový rozsah prešiel medzi napísaním Ramzesa a Egyptského sudcu, ale vidie? tu výrazné zlepšenie. A neská?u tu na m?a každú chví?u re?nícke otázky, na ktoré nikto neodpovedá. Zárove? ma fascinuje detailnos? pri opisovaní postupov výroby liekov. Je to až brilantné, ako si to Jacq naštudoval (alebo ako to vie, šak je to egyptológ). Niekedy sú dialógy nelogické, ale, pff, ?lovek nemôže ma? všetko.

An interesting book that gives readers a deep dive into New Kingdom Egypt under its most famous Pharoah, Ramses II.

Charting the adventure of young, idealistic judge who stumbles into events far beyond his authority or ability to handle, this is set up an historical murder-mystery but is really a political thriller; this first volume of the Judge of Egypt trilogy ends on a cliff-hanger, making it clear that there is a single, over-arching plot.

Jacq is a PhD Egyptologist, and his novel is filled little details of daily life (and sometimes footnotes that give extra little insights!) without bogging down in exposition. His Egypt feels both real and relatable and yet at times utterly alien. Characterization and dialogue are a bit trickier, however. The former may be a factor of translation -- Jacq writes in French -- but the former is on him. Pazair, the young judge, is likable enough but other than his love for the young doctor Neferet, he is a bit inscrutable. Far more relatable, and likable, are both Neferet herself, Suti -- the hot-headed, sex-obsessed, scribe-turned-charioteer, and Pazair's secretary, a father who dotes on his young daughter and her (to his mind) future career as a temple dancer, and is constantly finding reasons to ditch out of work for various family events.

It's an interesting little world, and while the scene transitions and slightly stilted dialogue are sometimes glaring, I am enjoying the idea of a dogged judge, his noseless, Nubian bodyguard and watch-baboon (no really), donkey, dog and boon companions trying to uncover a plot to destroy Pharoah himself. Yes, the writing is better than the Ramses’ novels, (a fact that caught me by surprise since this trilogy was written before the ramses’ saga…shouldn't you improve by time? no? sorry, my bad) but honestly it would have been hard to do worse.
The dialogues continue to be a theatrical script ... indeed, even worse since there the authors write in two lines what emotionally feels the character have to express, here nothing at all... embarrassing.
If in Ramses the thing that made me turn up my nose were the obscene descriptions, here there are no descriptions at all. And perhaps in a certain way it is better this way, better to avoid describing people if you are unable to do so.
Oh no, wait. We have a description, unfortunately the only description that I had the misfortune to read was the one of a female character (and what else could I expect? He could not describe the environment or an animal? I would have definitely preferred it) the author considers it important to describe the female body…more precisely he focuses mainly on the girl's breasts ... chilling.
As for the plot, nothing had happened yet and I had reached the eighteenth chapter. I don't want to waste my time with a book that doesn't deserve it.

Mi tía me había prestado este libro, pero nunca encontraba el momento para leerlo, y la verdad que lo cogí el otro día por casualidad y me ha ido enganchando poco a poco, hasta devorar su páginas.
Está muy bien ambientado en el Egipto antiguo, se nota que se ha documentado, y explica costumbres o nombres con notas a pie de página que hacen referencias a textos, jeroglíficos y documentación de esa época. Me parece curioso, por ejemplo, que a los asesinos se les llamaba devoradores de sombras, y así son denominados en el libro.
La historia empieza por un lado, con un crimen contra el poder del faraón, en el que nuestro protagonista, sin saberlo, se va a ver envuelto. El personaje principal es un juez, que debe buscar la verdad y, si no cumple con su deber, en el antiguo Egipto, tendrá castigo. Es una persona íntegra, que lucha por que se cumpla la ley, a pesar del poder de los personajes importantes con los que se cruza. Se va a ver inmerso en estas pequeñas corrupciones que va a intentar destapar y condenar, y que de algún modo, termina relacionado con el crimen inicial de la novela y el complot contra el faraón.
El autor poco a poco nos va metiendo en ese ambiente del antiguo Egipto y esa corrupción en las altas cúpulas (no muy diferente a la actualidad), la impotencia e injusticia contra los que obran bien por parte de los poderosos y codiciosos. Va captando la atención del lector, que quiere saber más, ver que la justicia vence y las buenas personas ganan.
El final queda bastante abierto, ya que tiene una continuación, que estoy deseando leer.1 Francesca Mascari73 9

Christian Jacq con una scrittura semplice e scorrevole riesce a trasmettere una chiara immagine di quella che era la vita nell'Antico Egitto, ai tempi del faraone Ramses. Con una narrazione lenta (che a volte fa desiderare qualcosa di più movimentato) il lettore si trova ad assaporare usi e costumi di quella incredibile civiltà. La lentezza così si trasforma da fattore negativo a caratteristica importante senza la quale forse l'ambientazione perderebbe credibilità.
Mentre leggevo mi sembrava di vedere la dottoressa Neferet preparare intrugli alle erbe per curare i suoi malati, il giudice Pazair passeggiare sulla riva del fiume insieme al suo cane Bravo, Suti assaporare le sue conquiste erotiche... Immaginavo il calore del sole pomeridiano, i colori caldi del tramonto e il cielo stellato in una notte silenziosa.
Per chi ama la culture degli egizi, questo romanzo è una finestra su quel mondo!
La trama inoltre è piacevolmente ingarbugliata, e nonostante manchi il fattore adrenalinico, stimola il lettore a proseguire nella lettura. I personaggi sono ben caratterizzati anche se scarse le descrizioni fisiche.
Il finale...beh quello mi ha sorpresa tantissimo! :D

Ho terminato di leggere il primo capitolo della trilogia intitolata Il romanzo della Piramide, L’inferno del giudice. Per quel che mi riguarda ho trovato la lettura piacevole ma lenta, i dialoghi talvolta mi son sembrati forzati con quei botta e risposta tipici della nostra era.

Da amante degli antici Egizi e della storia in generale ho apprezzato i riferimenti storici, la descrizione delle piramidi che restano ancora un mistero per il genere umano e la descrizione della vita e dell’economia ai tempi del regno di Ramses. Jacq ancora una volta ha fatto un ottimo sfoggio dei propri studi e delle proprie competenze.

Da ottimo scrittore Jacq ha saputo dosare con parsimonia le azioni dei protagonisti assestando solo sul finale un degno colpo di scena che ovviamente ti fa venire voglia di prendere in mano subito il secondo capitolo per sapere cosa ancora dovrà succedere.

Parlando dei personaggi invece devo dire che Jacq è stato bravissimo a farmi entrare in sintonia con loro. In alcuni passaggi avrei desiderato essere in riva al mare con Pazair e il suo fidato Bravo, solo per sentirne l’odore o solo per poter guardare l’orizzonte africano.2016-reading-challenge1 Sylvia7

I'm not giving it one star because I finished it and the plot was vaguely interesting. Plus I'm a sucker for Ancient Egypt. I read it quickly on the beach. But good lord. Awful, unnatural dialogue, flat characters, and no transitions between passages and in conversations as well. The translation smacks of the original French... lot's of awkwardly worded phrases that came straight from French. Two glaring examples: "they have always given complete satisfaction", "he enabled us to win" and things along those lines. (I'm a translator and these are formulations that I avoid because they sound so awkward and clunky!!) But the original writing is pretty darn awful, too. I left the book at my hotel as I was leaving. Definitely won't be reading the other two.

I'll leave you with a rather laughable bit of dialogue:
"She said, 'You're very persuasive, Suti. I can feel a gentle heat rising up within me, and I'd love to share it with you.'

Historical murder mysteries are my favourite leisure reads, and this one - the first book of a trilogy - is a wonderful example. It has an admirable hero, an intricate plot, and scope for speculation. The author is an Archaeologist and an Egyptologist, so is able to immerse the reader in a 'world' that feels authentic; a world in which magic and ritual play a central role, and murder impacts upon the harmony of society as a whole.1 Danilo Lipisk135

It was the first Christian Jacq book that I read and I did not it, it was not exciting, I don´t know what exactly bothered me in the dialogues, to me it was very poor, the story is kind of a "airport romance/suspense" book. I expected to acquire more knowledge about Ancient Egyptian History but I got only some curiosities...

I have more two of the Judge of Egypt Series... I will try another one, perhaps the next will be a bit better1 Monique27 9

Una de esa nóvelas históricas que siempre me ha encantado. La he leído con mucho interés, y reconozco que me llevo a disfrutar de Christian Jacq en toda la trilogia.1 Sam314 2

Reconozco que el libro se me ha hecho lento. No tanto que la historia avance despacio, sino que me costaba continuar con ella. El prólogo es bastante potente, pero luego la acción disminuye. Quizá es porque no estoy acostumbrada a este tipo de novelas, pero me daba la sensación de que la tensión se perdía y luego había intentos de recuperarla; más fluctuante que equilibrado.

Otro factor que ha influido en su contra ha sido la narración. Se nota que el autor sabe de lo que habla en cuanto al tema egipcio antiguo (al menos, desde mi lego punto de vista... Vale, lo he buscado, es egiptólogo; todo bien, Sam, todo bien), pero no encontraba ese equilibrio entre explicación y narración y diálogos y acción. Como si fuera a saltos. A veces un estilo muy austero, otras profuso en explicaciones. La ausencia de referencias en el paso del tiempo ha hecho que, o bien a él se le ha colado algo, o a mí hay líneas temporales que no me encajan... Y, por último (creo) aunque refleja los pensamientos de algunos personajes, no llega a hacerlo de una forma que te permita identificarte con ellos o empatizar; quizá porque en ocasiones los veía más como caricaturas que como seres de tres dimensiones: está el sabio, el tenaz, la manipuladora, la mujer objeto/fuente de deseo, la madre, el vago, el subordinado... Pero esto es algo absolutamente relativo, que conste. Como en todo, que a mí no me termine de enganchar o me haya dejado un poco fría no quiere decir que a otres no les haga devorar las páginas.

Para acabar con las pegas: la relación amorosa (cuyo único papel parece ser que el protagonista tenga un interés romántico que no le deja vivir, y que otro por ahí, al no ser correspondido, quiera hacerle la vida imposible a la chica; bueno, y para hablar de amores, el amigo, donjuán donde los haya, capaz de hacer que cualquier dama le confíe sus secretos, incluso con riesgo de muerte), las erratas y algunas actitudes de ¿en serio?

También tiene cosas buenas. Los distintos puntos de vista dan variedad y refleja bien distintos aspectos de la vida egipcia y sus variedades. No se queda en el juez, sin más; se mueve por distintas clases sociales, acompañas al ejército, comerciantes, visita pueblos más o menos alejados y personas de distintas nacionalidades... Para quienes les guste resolver intrigas, está bien planteado (aunque es uno de tres, no sé cómo continuará la trilogía). Y está lleno de pequeños detalles que seguro que harán los deleites de quienes les guste el Antiguo Egipto.

It's been a long while since I read those books, but I must admit I was very disappointed. I hope, since they're written by a specialist of that time period, that I would get a story which would give me lots of information while entertaining me. I worked my way through all books of the series, but felt and still feel no wish to read anything else by this author.
What vexed me particularly was the way we kept being fed the same information repeatedly, which made me feel the author thought I was too stupid to remember he'd told me the same thing just a few pages before. I do not appreciate being made to feel I'm an idiot by anyone, and that certainly destroyed whatever enjoyment I might have gotten from this work. Angeline258

J'ai apprécié de me retrouver transportée en Egypte ancienne, bien que l'auteur manque parfois de subtilité quand il livre des précisions sur les us et coutumes de l'époque. L'enquête est bien menée et intrigante, malgré le caractère très manichéen des personnages. Le juge Pazair, fraîchement nommé à Memphis et d'une droiture sans pareille, se lance le défi de faire respecter la justice, sans laisser la politique et la hiérarchie l'entraver. La verdad es que me ha decepcionado un poco este libro...No me ha gustado cómo estaba escrito, no sé si es que es más antiguo pero no estaba cómoda leyendo.

Además la historia se me ha hecho demasiado lenta, no parecía que arrancaba y no me he enterado de la mitad de las deducciones. No sé si me leeré el resto de libros de la saga, pero si es que sí tendré que pasar un tiempo hasta que lo retome. Malsquirkyreadings106

C'était vraiment une super bonne lecture. Le style est direct mais très poétique, on est baigné dans l'Égypte antique du temps de Ramsès II. J'avais des doutes quant au juge Pazair, le perso principal, mais c'est vraiment quelqu'un de bien qui ne cherche qu'à vivre le plus dignement et le plus en accord possible avec ses croyances. Whether it’s the original writing or the translation, this book was boring. Flat characters, no description, poor dialogue, really weird sex scenes I could have lived without reading, and a lot of irrelevant info-dumping about how to make papyrus and what’s in Ancient Egyptian medicine. I struggled to make it through the first book, and I won’t be bothering with the rest. So disappointing. I have a hit and miss with this author - either really enjoy his series (Ramses and Stone of Light) or particularly dis it eg Black Pharoah. This book fell into the dis group. There is something wrong with the writing, it doesn’t flow, it is clipped, too many characters with very little character development. And the story just wasn’t interesting. Je n’avais jamais lu cet auteur, et ce roman ne m’a pas déçue. Même si on n’échappe pas à quelques passages assez manichéens, il est bien construit et avec une juste dose d’égyptologie (on évite la leçon d’histoire), ce qui maintient l’attention du lecteur tout au long de cette enquête se déroulant sous le règne de ramses II. J’ai bien aimé ce livre qui changeait un peu de ce que j’ai l’habitude de lire, on est plongé dans l’Égypte ancienne et l’histoire ne manque pas de rebondissements.
