«He’s my anchor, he’s the compass that keeps me turned right.
If Sannaveh-8B didn’t break us, the aftermath sure as hell won’t.»

Sohven wants Jace to become his official mate on his home planet, afraid to lose him again after all that’s happened. Going back to Lohnyal might’ve not been the best idea, though….

I’m so happy we get more of Jace and Sohven’s story and that they got their HEA.

This book felt the complete opposite of the first one — in Head Above Water all we know are Jace and Sohven, they are always together, just the two of them on an alien planet. Whereas in a Rock and a Hard Place they are separated almost at the start. It was interesting to follow how their bond strengthened even when they couldn’t be together much, even when they were surrounded by others who wanted them.
The more they were separated, the more I longed for them to be reunited, for them to just forget about the traditions and Sohven’s family and leave together.

The mating trials were also different and fun. We were in the dark as much as Jace was, and discovering what each trial entailed as he discovered it was intriguing.

The spice was great, but a little sparse. I really d the teasing moments though, when they would tease each other from afar ‘cause they couldn’t touch.

The ending was a bit abrupt, satisfying on the romance side, but not plot-wise. There wasn’t any closure with Sohven’s parents.

Overall I really had fun with this and look forward to seeing where the author will take this series next.

«I’m in his arms. Somehow, come what may, I always end up right there in the end, right where he tells me I belong.»

I absolutely loved the first book, Head Above Water. Especially the surprise twist! I remember I really hoped to read more about Jace and Sohven and was beyond excited to see them in a second book. Great world building and wonderful characters. I obviously still love our main couple. After what they've been through in the previous book, there are lingering issues between them.

'Whatever it is that’s got him all wound up, I’ll get to the bottom of it. I can’t afford not to— he’s my anchor, he’s the compass that keeps me turned right. If Sannaveh-8B didn’t break us, the aftermath sure as hell won’t.'

'I know it’s wrong, but there are times I wish we’d never left the planet. There’s a part of me, a sliver deep down, that regrets our rescue. At least there he was entirely mine.'

Before we only had the two of them stranded together. But in this book they are around other people and have a lot more to deal with on top of Sohven's worries and inclinations.

I enjoyed once more seeing their bond grow despite the challenges they face.

'I'm in his arms. Somehow, come what may, I always end up right there in the end, right where he tells me I belong.'

I was very curious about Lohnyal, the mating ceremony, and Sohven's people's customs. This story was certainly an adventure. I can't wait until the next book, and I hope for Vozu's book, too! 5 stars. MJ79 2

I really loved book 1 in this series and I’m looking forward to getting some of the side characters stories too. Book 2 kept me engaged and that’s saying something considering I’ve been DNFing a lot recently but without giving anything away I’ll just say I wish the reasoning for their visit to the planet was different. Sohven not preparing Jace at all on what to expect or cultural expectations came off really sh*tty and I kept asking myself wth he would take him there. If the reason for them going had been different and it hadn’t been his choice that would’ve changed my entire perspective on it. To sum it up I wasn’t a fan of book 2 but I’m still invested in the characters and think there’s a lot of potential with this series. Dr susan2,611 41

Great romantic sci fi adventure

Yes, there is worldbuilding, and the non-humans, their planet, and their society are fascinating in a xenophobic, restrictive way. There are many sexual aspects to the story, but there is much more than sex. Jace's experiences as a human in an alien society trying to be diplomatic and accepting of cultural differences are well-written, interesting, and slightly horrifying. Sohen's PTSD is believable, but his decision to attend the festival supports the idea that you really can't go home again. I'm looking forward to Little Ships 3 and Sahvedi's story. Aiste1 review

I am always for a lookout for a good MM Sci-fi story with an interesting plot and worldbuilding. I d the first book a lot and the second one didn't disappoint, since it had all those things. The second book takes us to Lohnyal, Sohven's word and their adventures there.
I read this book in one go. I d the writing. The intimate scenes were well written as well. I'm really looking forward to the third book in the series as well as more books from this author in general.
