THE STORY
On the world of Nuceria, the last day of the slave rebellion is nigh. From the hundreds freed by Angron, barely more than fifty remain, hiding in the mountains, feeding on the rich blood of their saviour in lieu of real food. As the High-riders, the so-called nobles who tortured the slaves and made them fight for their own amusement, gather their forces to bring the rebellion down once and for all, Angron prepares to sell his life dearly. But other forces are moving. In the skies about Nuceria, the Emperor of Mankind is preparing to meet one of his long-lost sons. And that meeting will be a fateful one

The voice was thunder and ice in his brain. Angrons Nails bit deep, punishing him and the invasion, demanding that he kill the speaker, and then everything else.
Who hnng, whispered Angron, finding that he could still speak. Who are
+I am the Emperor, and you are coming with me.+
Where?
+Beyond this place. To the stars.+
My brothers, gasped Angron. My sisters. I wont abandon them.
+They, and this planet, are no longer your concern.+
No. Whatever it is you want of me, I refuse. My place is here, with my true kin. I fight here. I die here.
The voice was silent for a moment. Angron almost sensed regret in the thunder that echoed through his mind when it spoke again.
+Then I am sorry.+
Ian St. Martin's first take on Angron is a very good short story about his last moments on Nuceria, his first meeting with the Emperor and the first captain that started the lomg sequence of War Hounds, the precursors to the World Eaters, dead officers before Khârn ended it. Just perfect prequel to the After Desh'ea story by Matthew Farrer, my most favourite tale in the Tales of Heresy anthology, and to the upcoming Angron: Slave of Nuceria novel.black-library ebooks-kindle-digital-editions science-fiction ...more5 s Eileen1,174 61
Poor Angron. :(media-tie-in own-kindle1 Michael Dodd984 73
In his final days on Nuceria, Angron leads a ragtag army of fellow slaves in a hopeless battle against the overwhelming forces of the High Riders, the Nucerian nobles. Hes come to terms with his inevitable death and the chance to find peace at last, but fate and the father he never wanted conspire against him.
Theres perhaps more impact if youve read Slave of Nuceria, but either way its an interesting little character study and a welcome reminder that theres more to this character than just the Butchers Nails.
