Sinopsis

Akitada discovers that his appointment as governor comes with baggage in the person of the prime minister's favorite nephew. Then things turn really ugly.

He arrives to find a flooded province, mutinous nobles, and an empty tribunal, the previous incumbent having fled from a hostile population. When the P.M.'s nephew disappears, a frantic search of an abandoned temple turns up a dark and murderous secret. Murders multiply: a merchant finds his wife's headless body and a man is tortured to death. Add two seductive young women who have a plan of their own and both Akitada's career and marriage are threatened.

I am so worried that soon my beloved Akitada series will be over. The main character Akitada is getting older and is now a grandfather!! I love this series and the characters feel old family friends.2 s RichardAuthor 30 books49

Our hero takes another posting to govern in Bizen province. The town has just experienced a devastating flood, the previous governor has taken off for the hills, there are pirates in the bay... And all isn't very cozy, and he's rather saddled with an enthusiastic but young and inexperienced assistant who is, of course, a lad from an important family in the capital. Akitada and his retainers are immediately dropped into several murder investigations simultaneously. There are bodies in a well, a headless corpse, thefts, and a young lady rather too eager to get to know our protagonist better.

The book has the author's usual smooth writing style and period atmosphere. (It takes place in the year 1040, as explained in the historical note.) Considering where the book ends, I'm now rather hoping the next adventure tells follow up with the impending happy family changes we learn about near the end.

Akitada is once again made a governor. He reports with his family to a post that has been deserted by his predecessor. He takes with him the prime minister’s nephew, Yoshishi, as lieutenant governor to train and mentor. Piracy is a problem. Sullen nobles. A murder. Soon Yoshishi is charmed by a local courtesan and disappears. Has he been killed or kidnapped? Lots of action as Akitada deals with threats to his life and his marriage as well. The populace doesn’t have much faith in the government outsiders nor do the aristocrats who have nothing but contempt. Akitada has his hands full as usual. These are always an enjoyable read as he shows his wisdom and also his vulnerability in righting wrongs.mystery-historical1 Laura202 5

Akitada’s promotion as governor to Bizen comes with some baggage; as usual, he can never catch a break. The prime minister saddles Akitada with his young nephew as assistant governor, and Akitada’s predecessor in Bizen has mysteriously fled. There are several murders, a kidnapping, and piracy, all of which keep Akitada scrambling in his first weeks in Bizen. I do hope the author adds at least one more book to the series as this one ended with some unfinished business. I’ve been a fan of Akitada for almost twenty years and always look forward to a new book. Also, the author’s historical notes provide excellent background information. So definitely eagerly awaiting more Akitada!historical-fiction mystery-thriller series Arnold A. Mount13

Off the beaten path

Another fine adventure with a surprisingly calm ending. I have enjoyed all the adventures this far and was pleased with a bit of serenity. It could be the calm before the storm. I look forward to Akitada's next adventure! Anne626
