5????
It's such a great book... I listened to the audio, absolutely amazing. Thriller, horror mixed with Greek mythology. The creep factor is a 10.
Many people have just up and disappeared near the hole of the cave... but where are they going? Will the team make it out from the expedition, or will the creatures of the earth devor them ?
This is my second book of Mullins, and I'm hooked.4 s Sarah B1,123 19

Tense, Dreadful and Full of Giant Spiders!

If you love those horror movies about giant bugs \ spiders than you'll love this! It starts out a bit slow but rapidly picks up speed - and tons of webbing too. Even better yet is this story is more original in the plot: there are no mad scientist, no nuclear waste and no they are not aliens either! By the end the whole crazy scenario is actually very well explained. That may sound a bit unly but its quite true...

So this book had many of the things I in a story. It had a bunch of characters going deep into the earth, into a massive unknown cave system, to go find out where all of these missing people are going. Everyone had heard the rumors of the cave that is under the town of Bethel in Scotland but the thing is NO ONE has ever come back out alive. Even just a few steps inside is enough to seal your doom. So then one day this super rich woman who has a troubled past decides to help a few others to learn the truth.

And once she gets down there....well...its a fight to survive!

As I said earlier the beginning was a little slow as we learn about the main character and her various problems. That is sprinkled with short teaser scenes from the past of people vanishing into the cave. And those short scenes are very good! And then once you read enough the main expedition starts on its way down with tons of equipment. And what they are expecting to find they don't. Instead they find other things very dreadful.

Better yet this story was full of twists! There are actually several of them in here, including a few big ones at the end.

Its a fast moving adventure story. Lots of danger and excitement. Great descriptions of everything. The plot is well thought out.

I think the truth at the end will surprise you.adventure animal-stories creature-stories ...more3 s Colette Leonard7

Definitely recommend. Read with lights on!

Loved it. This book was as so very creepy and itchy in all the right ways. I was thoroughly entertained from the first page to the last. 3 s Kassandra6

Fun, short read

I enjoyed this book.
As a big horror fan with an average fear of spiders, it didn't scare me much. That felt a little disappointing, but that's my usual horror experience. There was tension and intensity, and when I wasn't reading this, I wanted to be. 2 s Melissa Brooker14 1 follower

Scary

I love creature features, whether it be in book form or movies. This book was scary. I'm fearful of spiders and this was an uncomfortable but fun read. I'll probably even read it again. I'll be looking for more books by the author 1 Nicola Gray33 1 follower

A fun read with giant spiders in a cave - my idea of hell!!! d the Greek mythology weaved into it as well although knowing the myths I did work out who ‘she’ was quite early on.
One thing that did bug me….. it’s set in the UK!!! When someone dies the estate goes through probate and we don’t use escrow…. Just a teeny stupid thing and could be edited very easily. This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.Show full review1 Sean211 5

Having thoroughly enjoyed the author's vampire novel BLOOD AND SALT, I was looking forward to seeing what he might do with a different concept, and to put it mildly I was not disappointed. Whereas the aforementioned novel took place in the Atlantic Ocean on board the Titanic, this time around Mr. Mullins carries us under the dark hills of Scotland where people have been going missing for years. While the cover image is something of a spoiler right off the bat, Mullins still creates a sense of uneasy mystery and even after you think you know exactly what's going on, he throws a few unexpected twists at you. And in the unly event that the beings behind the various disappearances don't scare you--and they certainly did this reader--the dank, claustrophobic atmosphere the author creates as his cast of characters make their way through a vast network of uncharted caves probably will. Moreover, the writer seems to have a real knack for creating characters that are easy to identify with and root for, and our main protagonist--a woman who has made more than her share of mistakes and is desperately trying to do the right thing this time around--is eminently relatable. UNDER BETHEL is a fast-moving story of creeping terror that hits all the right notes for horror fans. AsianBuns27

It was a little silly but entertaining. While I loved the underground cave concept, it wasn’t very scary, especially the latter portion. I wasn’t quite expecting the mythology, but the overall feel good ending was not surprising.
A few nitpicks:
-I didn’t how Nathan didn’t mention anything to the others about a possible threat in the cave and never seemed scared until the spiders arrival. He brought a weapon himself but never bothered to address that option for the others.
-I have no idea how the 3 of them (Malcom, Allister, and Duncan) originally survived on their own when they got separated. I understand Elizabeth surviving with Nathan because he had a weapon. How the others were unscathed that entire time is beyond me.
-I bought the paperback version and on the back it says Elisabeth is separated from the others in the synopsis (also says it on the GR synopsis) but that doesn’t happen until 2/3rds the way through and it made it seem she got separated from the whole group at once which was not the case. This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.Show full reviewadult-read Nick Scarbrough71 5

I finished Under Bethel by Hubert L. Mullins today and WOW! This author is quickly becoming one of my favorites. This is the 3rd book of his I've listened to and all 3 of them have been OUTSTANDING!

This book touches on several subjects. If you are scared of dark places, caves, spiders, (and Greek gods??) this book is for you!

I really enjoyed the story but the narration was first class. The narrator was easily understood even when she was hitting those heavy Scottish accents.

I literally can't praise this author or his work enough. This is very mild horror. Just enough to give you some slight unease and cringiness but don't be afraid to tackle this one even if you don't think you are a fan of horror. It has superb story telling and a pace fast enough to keep you wanting more the entire way through.

A very easy 5 stars. Emily Barry130 4

Wow another great book from Mr. Mullins. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the tension along with the addition of Greek Mythology. I had learned about Arachne during my high school Mythology class and was pleased to see that myth turn up in this book. It was slightly creepy in some parts but I'm honestly surprised it didn't scare me more. I have severe arachnaphobia and I'm also somewhat claustrophobic so being tormented by giant spiders in a cave thousands of feet underground is my literal worst nightmare. The first part of Elisabeth's story before they went into the cave was a teeny bit slow but once we got in and started exploring, that's when it really got good! Renee120 8

Mullins killed it with this one. There’s not enough spider books and he absolutely annihilated the assignment. My skin is still crawling.
It started off a little slow but once the crew descended down that hole, the pace quickened to the max. If the sheep shearing/clothes stealing spiders, claustrophobia, and darkness wasn’t enough, this book dives even deeper into Gods and Goddesses, magic portals, a tapestry weaving battle, and a terrifying massive lady spider.
Concluded with a fantastic yet cliff hanger ending, I’d love a follow up book or perhaps a series as the food chain continuously starts changing? I want to know what Medusa is up to. There’s just so many possibilities. This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.Show full reviewreally-want-to-read Chris Hookway38 1 follower

a reason to be scared in the dark

This was an absolutely amazing read. One of the best I’ve read in a while. Mullins obviously did his homework and then some, creating imagery with his words that had his monsters skittering around your brain in all their glory.
This was a fast paced book, one that I barely could put down. Absolutely devoured this it. It has fantastic characters, incredible locales, amazing lore and surprises galore. I cannot recommend this one enough. This is a must read for anyone looking for a good monster dark fantasy horror book. Kate1 review

Came across this book in a Facebook ad. The cover pulled me in and I’m so glad it did. The book was a thriller of a page turner where I wanted to find out what happened with Lizzy and crew next! If not for adulting getting in the way I would have read it in one sitting. I now have a new author to add all their books to my to be read list! If you spine tingling creature features with a cool twist of a reveal at the end you won’t be disappointed! Dale RobertsonAuthor 6 books29

This will have a couple of common phobias on high alert! Well written and engaging, the story is quite the mystery from start until the revealing end. I did think the end was a bit fantastical but that didn't take anything away from the rest of it. I really d the alternative chapters at the start that told the story of some of the missing- they really added to the intrigue I had.

A really good horror book, definitely recommend you give it a go. Dondalaya101 1 follower

Just ok.

While this book was an okay read, and I appreciate the dept this author was willing to go to create a story on something he hates. Spiders! However this was just not my cup of tea, and it has nothing to do with the story being terrible, and more to do with me not liking the author's writing style. Because of that, this will probably be my one and only book I ever read by this author. Arlene Tasco21

This was my first read of this Author and I will be reading more of his books. His writing is a mixture of suspense, horror, mythology and history weaved altogether that make the pages come so alive. I really didn’t want to put the book down. I read at night when in bed, so I read until my eyes won’t stay open! I fought hard to keep my eyes open because I didn’t want to stop reading. I totally recommend reading this book, unless you suffer from arachnophobia. Nick Padula53 4

I’ve never been too bothered by spiders. Not exactly a fan of them, but I have a live and let live attitude towards most bugs (except mosquitoes, it’s on sight with those f*ckers). This book dares to ask the question “What if spiders were as big as horses?” All the sudden, I felt a bit less chill with our little eight-legged friends.books-i-reviewed1 comment Terry and dog763 21

A masterfully woven tale.
This entertaining story is horror pie. There is a slice of disfunctional family, a young girls tragic past, a creepy and dark mystery, disappearing people, a creature feature and historical legends. An interesting group of characters and a fantastic setting takes you to unexpected places. A gripping and enjoyable book to take your mind to another place. Miranda Jo122

Mythology, redemption and spiders. This story really tickles your flesh! A spoiled little rich girl, now mature and looking for redemption, stumbles into a web of mystery after her father passes away. Get lost in a winding maze of mythology as she discovers what exactly is creeping under Bethel. A fantastic book, that I sure hope, sparks a continuing series. Laid-Back Book Bitches357 98

This was my first book from Hubert Mullins and I'm addicted. The creepy factor for me was a 20. I hate anything that crawls and I hate spiders (one of my worse fears) but I really enjoyed this book. I was excited to see if they escaped the hole. If you are a fan of horror/suspense you need to read this book...deannas-read Grey Langford7

I picked up this book thinking it may be a good read in between some of my others on my TBR. Well let me tell you, it was amazing. Granted, I did figure out one of the plot twists, but that didn’t take away from the story at all. This book was fantastic and extremely well written. I loved every second of it. June2

really different and surprising good

I say surprisingly good as I hate spiders and was really shocked that once I found out the story’s nightmare was spiders, I actually kept reading reading by this time I was so into the characters I kept reading. This book is so different than anything I’ve ever read before, its really is well written. Dean Klimpel3

Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down.

What a great book. Just when you think you know the direction it’s headed, Ben, it changes direction and throws her for a loop. A lot of action and very good description. OK Ruthie6 4

I HATE Spiders!

It's more than truth, I abhor spiders! And yet, I couldn't put this book down! I'm a long time student of world mythology, and this story wrapped me up and dragged me in! Thank you so much!

Wonderful read

This was a great story. I love how it developed and had many unexpected twists. A lot of context which helps to relate with characters as well as their situation. This is a good, fun read Diane Coronado5 8

I am not a fan of the dark, or tight spaces or spiders, but somehow the combination of the three made for a really good story. I had to read it while walking on the treadmill to burn off the jitters it was giving me. This is my second Herbert L Mullins book and I am now life long fan of his work. great story

Just the beginning of the book terrified me. So much that I put the book down for a few days, then realized that I wanted going to be able to let it go. My worst fear was realized when I picked it back up. I was terrified and fascinated. Donna Kaht5

Exquisite Terror

I too hate spiders. This book sucked me in from day one and left me wanting more at the final word. Bravo! Eva24
