I'm not entirely sure how or why, but i feel this book has caused a major change in my brain.

Let me clarify. I have long been an almost vegetarian. Not a vegan--to be vegan would require giving up cheese and eggs, and that, right now, seems impossible to me. Anyway, here's the thing--did you know that strict Zen Buddhists allegedly thank the rice plant for giving up its life for their nourishment.

The difference between that and thanking the animals who die to feed us is that so far as i know, you cannot farm grain and vegetables with the same level of cruelty as factory farms do animals. For this reason, I have struggled for years with regard to meat. While it's very true that meat is what gave our species a kick in the brain pan, I daresay that now, in the 21st century century, that reason is obsolete. Frankly, I'm not sure most of us are actually using those evolved brains for more than tribal politics and conspiracy theories, but that's a discussion for a different venue.

So, a warning, many of the loudest vegans irk me badly with their self-righteousness, and yet here I am. Back to Mr Siegel's book--my evolution has been slow, but thorough. First, it was my awareness of our companion animals and my peripheral involvement in animal rescue. Next, a growing awareness of what humans do--if you are going to eat meat, don't lie to yourself. Next, my growing discomfort with the methods we use in an industrialized world. Meat gave us bigger brains, but we didn't harvest it the way we do today.

Siegel's book is entertaining and the characters, by and large, are engaging, even the less charming among them. But the mechanism he uses to illustrate his very point is all too plausible based on very real research, and his analysis of evil all too convincing. Peter and Cat inform and illuminate and the whole thing has left me standing on one leg wondering what IS the sound of one hand clapping?

I've gone about this all wrong. The book is funny, tense, sad and victorious and now i need to let it gel in my head before i do the necessary and reread. Enakshi J.Author 7 books46

Intriguing and thought-provoking, this novel weaves together disparate timelines and characters to explore profound questions about the nature of existence and the origin of evil. Starting in the distant past, where a plant-eating hominid discovers a new way to survive, and reaching into the present day with a sea lion's plea for help, the narrative takes readers on a journey through time and consciousness.

Wow

This book was really cool. I was getting so much interesting information at various points in the book, that I lost track of where the whole story was going. I didn't care, though, because it was so captivating. When I got back into the main storyline, it was very enjoyable.
Well - written tale, I'll probably re- read this one down the road.
Thank you, Mr. Siegel for the cool world. Ronald SmithJr71 2
