"The Gathering Storm" by Hilary Rhodes is the sequel relating the rise of William the Conqueror to his defeat of the English King Harold at Hastings in 1066. The author ably uses the novel format to relate the fascinating early British history. The revolving alliances in France, England, and Normandy is enough to keep many novelists spinning narratives, making heroes out of enemies and vice versa. Indeed, William himself has many warts, as does Harold. This numerous cast of characters, for me, is hard to keep straight but that doesn't detract from the narrative. Although the the final victory at Hastings in not in doubt the individual stories are fascinating. mystery1 Susan10

I found this well written and very close to the historical fast as we know them about William of Normandy. There are two books that I read back to back and learned more then I will ever remember but they are both woven into novels that are very readable. lucinda pierce4
